I don't think Ocelot really deserves an F. Yeah he bombed, but to say Jill had no business winning her match is a load of crap, unless you totally missed the RE5 trailer that probably made her the sentimental favorite in a lot of voter's minds.

giving Magus an F is absurd

losing or not to sandbag isn't very relevant since sandbag was untested

Magus got 40% on Sonic. he deserves at least a B just for that.

As a huge Jill fan, I admire your vim, but no way. Ocelot should NOT have lost that match. In terms of purely results (not percentages), that was arguably the biggest upset of the first round.

Nah, I think it's deserved. Magus lost a match he was supposed to win, and he lost it in a hilariously depressing way. Also, 40% on Sonic doesn't mean as much as it did years ago. It means even less considering that Magus was supposed to get 50% on Sonic in the olden times. Hell, and it means even LESS because Sonic and Sandbag were clearly splitting some fanbase votes. Magus was pathetic.

Yeah. They're both Nintendo (de facto or not), and they shared the most significant game Sonic has gotten in years. I'd say there's a definite overlap there. The extent of the overlap is debatable, but it was a clear advantage for Magus, and he lost anyway.

Yeah, because Jill/Ocelot last year was such a huge blowout that absolutely no factor could have ever turned the tide easily.

There was a factor. Metal Gear Solid 4. All the fans said Ocelot owned ass. Really now, let's simplify this:

Jill loses to Ocelot.
Ocelot stars in the second biggest game of the year and reportedly steals the show.
Jill has to face Ocelot again.

something something profit

Well it looks like Tidus isn't gonna survive this round, but i didn't think the Cube would actually be behind Mega Man since i thought the Cube was gonna lead this round.

As for Magus losing to Sandbag, he was at a disadvantage anyway considering Sandbag was in a sense both a Joke and Brawl character so Sandbag had 2 sources of votes.

Yeah, but the problem is that Ocelot lost. If anyone can provide a better reason than the RE5 trailer, then maybe I would consider it. It's not the like the main character of the game went from losing to Pyramid Head to making a respectable showing against Sora and Fox as well.

Sorry, but I think Magus deserves his F. He lost a match that he was supposed to win. And considering Sonic and Sandbag were splitting votes, that 40% means less than you might think. Magus was grade-AAA pathetic.

Magus doesn't deserve an F. I'd give him a B- for putting up as much of a fight as he did against a joke and a Noble Niner. Sure, he deserves an F based on our expectations at 3 PM that day, but Sandbag was the favorite in this topic before the match, and most people didn't think Magus would break 40% on Sonic. Of course, now that we've seen all the Noble Niners so far impress in round 2 after faltering in round 1, that 40% doesn't look quite so impressive, but I'd still give Magus a higher grade than Crono for round 1. And if Magus deserves an F for losing to Sandbag, Crono deserves an F in both 2006 and 2007 for pulling more depressing collapses.

About Magus/Sandbag:

1) As mentioned already, it has to be certain that Sandbag and Sonic shared at least a little bit of fanbase. To say otherwise would be to assume none of the votes for Sandbag or Sonic came from people who played SSBB.

2) As mentioned already, getting 40% on Sonic doesn't mean as much as it used to. Since we've started this four-way format, there has only been one time a Sonic character impressed: Sonic against Sub-Zero, Gordon, and Duke...which was immediately after his announcement in SSBB while Duke/Gordon fought over a specific PC-FPS fanbase...

...but Knuckles lost hard to Yoshi twice and let Zelda-coupled-with-Mario smash him, Shadow was embarrassed last year and was even moreso this year by Zidane, and Tails let The Boss take third over him last year while never standing a chance against DK this year. Sonic nearly let Squall beat him last year despite Sora being in the poll, too...which is funny; comparing Squall-despite-Sora and Magus based on 2k5's Magus-Knux-Squall and 2k7's Sonic/Squall/Sora/Sub-Zero, Magus should have gotten ~45%. Instead, although Magus was unhindered, Sonic had Sandbag in the poll, the supposed SSBB-deboost, CTDS-anticipation is rising, and the idea of NN'ers under-performing in the first round...Magus only got ~40% on Sonic and lost to the most controversial joke character we've seen since L-Block.

3) Did you see the lead he gave up? I also understood most joke-characters have a stronger vote at night than at day...though Sandbag is an exception, Magus let that exception happen to an unbelievable degree.

Magus is not bad for a character strength-wise, but that match killed a lot of respect for him. His 40% isn't all that impressive either in hindsight. He does NOT deserve a B-grade like I've seen suggested, and I am okay with him getting an F (though a D would be more fitting in my book).

While breaking 40% was above my expectations, you still have to realize that Sonic characters suck in this format and if it weren't for L-Block MC would've beaten him in round 5. Personally I wouldn't given him an F, but the highest I'd give him would be a D. Sandbag performed the second biggest successful comeback in contest histroy (57 votes behind Sonic/Crono) it was all choke for Magus.

40% on Sonic is more than most characters can say. Seriously, get off your ****ing high horse.

Based on R1 last year, Sub-Zero was expected to get 45.35% on Sonic. If Sonic's hype-strength is gone and his SSB-strength is hindered this year due to him sucking in SSBB and/or Sandbag's presence, then this would assume a lot of characters could break 40% -- in fact, many respectable fighters could break 45% if Sub-Zero could.

This. Magus was not some favorite who lost. Sandbag comeback or no, Magus did better on Sandbag when all was over than a lot of people said he would. If Magus had halted the comeback and won by 1 vote, would that have made him substantially better somehow?

Question:

What is this "Sonic characters suck "in this format"" garbage?

I think you can safely take out the "in this format" to make it a more correct statement. Releasing terrible game after terrible game is what is making Sonic characters blow, nothing to do with "this format". Just like "this format" has nothing to do with Pikachu and Master Chief last year.

It's only because Sonic's recent bad performances have been exclusively in this format, which can't be helped as we haven't had 1v1 matches since 2006. But yeah, there's no reason to attribute it to the format as opposed to Sonic dropping- on the other hand, it could be true.

There's no reason for Sonic to have dropped, that's what. Sonic's been releasing critically panned games for YEARS now. Yet 2006 was by any reasonable account the strongest Sonic we've ever seen, and him scoring his first win over a fellow Noble ever. There's no reason for Sonic to suddenly have dropped to a level to where Sub-Zero could get 45% on him pre-Brawl announcement when Sonic was projected to beat him with 64% of the vote a year beforehand. The ONLY thing that changed was the format.
