I wouldn't be surprised to see Chief break 50%. Professor Layton = non-factor. I don't know where Kain is in order of FF4 popularity...and with Cecil having laid an egg earlier, I doubt that will help Kain's case at all.

I would say Square has remained about static actually. As for ItemFAQs, that's a definite.

And the Super Mushroom would absolutely dominate in a 4-way.

About MC tomorrow: if people think MC will get low-40's%, please look below:

http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=2881
http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=2904

Now, let's compare them: Yuna would have smashed Raiden last year and will still likely lose to her, Kain Highwind wouldn't beat Vercetti when Kefka couldn't while Alucard would break him, and Professor Layton wouldn't be far from PaRappa...so we can safely assume Liquid murders him. So, all of MC's opponents tomorrow should be notably weaker than either of his first two matches last year...

...and those polls were before (Vercetti/PaRappa) and after (Alucard/Liquid) his Halo 3 release. He nearly had 46% before it and it's fair to assume tomorrow's four-way is weaker...and post-release, he nearly had 44% when there's absolutely no question tomorrow's four-way is far weaker.

To be fair, that was MC's contest to shine since the hype was huge and its release was during the contest. However, if that has diminished, then something to consider would be how well the 360 has been doing. It increased in ownership here more than the Wii in the past year (perhaps more than the Wii and DS combined...?) while online gaming is at an all-time high, more people would rather only be able to play a 360 than any other system, and Hayabusa was able to pull a huge board upset on Zero. Barring some exceptions (Tim, Kaim), the system has been doing better than ever here. Perhaps that would keep MC from losing a lot of his momentum from last year...hard to say.

Regardless, the main argument would be that tomorrow's four-way is nothing compared to what his had in R2 last year, and I would still think it's weaker than what he had in R1 where he was in pre-release mode and still got 45.69%. The only way he falls below that is if his original hype and excitement from its imminent release helped him out and he has lost that now, but there's still little reason to see him to worth than, say, 44%.

Something fishy happened with Liquid in that match though. And either Vercetti fell off the map (quite possible, in which case Kain could beat him), or something fishy was there too.

Sonic characters are looking like a joke so far this year

That's been their rep since last year. But I was thinking about Sonic team the last couple years. Like everyone else, I've thought how the format hurt them.

But what if it's not the format? Chrono Trigger characters did worse last year, but we've assumed that's because the game is fading and they're getting weaker. Not that it's the format.

Maybe Sonic team has just gotten weaker, because they haven't had a big well-received game in so long?

Sonic could still do decent this year though, because he's gotten more exposure recently than the other Sonic characters. But I still expect him to be weaker than Chief; they should be pretty close though.

I'm not sure about Chrono characters. Crono looked fairly impressive in his match, maybe he's going to turn back the hands of time with the new port of CT.

As for Sonic... yep, I think he's in some serious trouble. Barring some sort of unexpected surprise from his match, I think it can be safely said he is most definitely the bottom rung of the Noble 9 and is in real danger of losing Vincent, Squall or hell, Big Boss.

Sonic was just far too awful last year for me to expect anything noteworthy this time around. He had four matches, three of them were total duds, and the one good (admittedly great) performance came right after he was announced for Brawl. If Sandbag makes it out of the first round, I'd be extremely confident in Auron beating Sonic during the second round. I'd probably bet money on it if I could.

now why the hell doesn't my bracket reflect this oh well

I've got Sonic going a good ways, but eventually going down to Sephiroth > Master Chief. But I don't think he's going to make it. If the strong performances from Squall and Sora are any indication of Auron, Sonic might be done in that round.

Something fishy happened with Liquid in that match though.

Likely true, but then consider that Raiden is in the match now. There's a chance something similar can happen to Raiden now.

In fact, as a side-note, between possible fishiness (SFF?) of MC/MGS and BB/Raiden pulling at each other, Kirby's not exactly out of the running of advancing next round...

...but it sure does look grim.

1. Zack Fair was in that match. Cloud with black hair.

True. But I still doubt that pre-FF7 characters are worth much in this contest. And Cecil himself got tripled by Kirby back in 2005. That makes it that much harder for me to put any faith in Kain.

2. I'm pretty sure Kain Highwind is way more liked than Cecil amongst FF fans. IE Tidus/Auron.

I can't really say anything about that.

This jokefear is overrated. Mudkip only got that many percent because the poll was just X VS Mudkip VS two characters nobody cares about. The L-Block is the previous champion and despite bracket voters Ryu out of all characters almost beat it. The Cube winning it's poll was no surpise at all, at least if you knew what you where doing (Yeah I'm just trying to act cocky that I got that match correct)

Sandbag has two things going for it: Lulz and Smash fans. But there's no internet fad with the Sandbag. I've never seen "So I beat the Sandbag OVER 9000%, So I Heard U Liek Sandbag, or SANDBAG'D. Sandbag is just a joke character that isn't funny.

Then what about the Smash support? Well since day 1 in this contest we've seen that Brawl barely did anything. But it still should have some soild fans right? Well then there's Sonic, who is also in Brawl, and more fans of the series will care about an actual character in the game than just a bag of sand.

"But Masterhand beat Kuja", yeah but that was the villain in the game, not just a bag of sand. And then it lost to Dr Robotnik who the got completely destoryed by Ganondorf, who is maybe equal but in no way stronger than Sonic."

Look at how Lucas are doing today, another character who shares the SSB fanbase with a character the fans cares more about. the Sandbag won't do much better on thursday.

Unless of course you are thinking: The bag was in Meele and Sonic wasn't so the Smash fans will vote for the bag instead...

Very very good. Kirby pretty much has to hope for Raiden taking a lot of BB's support, MC also taking some of the action support, being positively affected by being the only Nintendo option in poll, and Big Boss not getting a Naked Snake picture next round.

Shouldn't you be closing your account by now Ashe, instead of jinxing Magus into really losing to a bag of sand?

Also, why are people talking about L-Block like it isn't a serious threat? Because it barely beat Ryu? Do you remember that this is the same L-Block that was easily beaten by Kirby in round 1? So you mean to tell me that if L-Block was in the poll today, it'd be game over? I don't think so. I don't think many of you here realize the nature of the joke character (items, not CATS etc.). It doesn't operate like a normal entry... it just does not. I'd like for Magus to win, I really would. He's a great character, and my bracket has him moving on. But I don't see it happening at all. Unlike BRAWLFEAR, Jokefear is well founded and has yet to be proven wrong. Brawlfear was over on day 1 on the contest.
