Galaxy got its fair share of criticism from board-goers - although, yes, its critical acclaim was something to behold.

As for a high-profile blockbuster game living up to the anticipation and hype? Oh I don't know oh wait how about GOD OF WAR II WHO THE HELL PICKED KIRBY

RE4 wasn't really hyped either. People expected it to be good, but it being so incredible was a surprise.

A HYPED game means Twilight Princess, Brawl, MGS4, Halo 2/3, ect.

I just don't think that L-Block "grew" in popularity between rounds the way people are insinuating. He did better, if you judge him in comparison to other characters, but this is an entirely different kind of format. Prior to the last two matches, which had massive outside support, L-Block got roughly 29% in every match regardless of competition. Sure that could just be coincidence and he was gaining in popularity the entire time, but I think it's more likely that he gets 29% no matter what, which, depending on his competition, makes him better or worse.

I think it'd be funny because Board 8 would have an even bigger whinefest than last year and would probably cause half the statheads who frequent this topic to promptly kill themselves or at least break down into tears.

Forgive me if I have you mistaken with someone else, but didn't you throw a tantrum and commit account suicide when Luigi lost to Squall?

Also,

I hope that no one thinks I'm some whiner who's just letting my personal preferences dictate my bracket in regards to joke characters. I have no problems with joke characters in principle, although to be honest I'm a little sick of them taking up all of the contest's attention. I honestly take these contests very competitively and I would never make a pick out of personal preference that I didn't think would happen. I just honestly think people are overrating joke characters, and not because of personal preference. And I admit that I could very well be wrong.

Melee was received much better than Brawl, and remains a better-received game than Brawl. Yes, there are many people who enjoy Brawl, but I have seen no indication they enjoy it more than they enjoyed Melee. Equivalently, maybe. On the other hand, there exists a non-trivial group of people who loved Melee to death and treat Brawl as the worst game ever.

In terms of casuals, this is wrong. At best Melee is equal, with Brawl usually winning comfortably. Among competitive players is where Melee shines.

But what I'm saying is that I've seen no evidence that casuals in fact like Brawl now substantially more than they liked Melee before Brawl came out. Yes, they'll vote Brawl over Melee directly, but the difference with most people seems trivial- that is, there are very few or no games they would vote Brawl over but not Melee. It is only with the competitive people that the difference is large- and they heavily favor Melee.

I'm also speaking from the perspective of someone who has Brawl as his favorite Smash by far (for reasons that are obvious to those that know me). Characters that should boost from Brawl will boost from it, and those gains should outweigh any losses Nintendo takes as a whole.

Note that I say characters that "should" boost. A classic example of a Nintendo character that I would peg as weaker than his previous incarnations would be Mario. I've said before that the plumber rises and falls with Nintendo rather than any particular games, and he'll be the one I'll be keeping an eye on to gauge it this contest.

GOTY and strict competition with Twilight Princess, *the* hyped game that most people on this site like (though maybe not love)? I can't fault it too much there. I can't buy Mario not boosting - I could see some fans voting for Mario over Link now based on how they received the two Wii titles.

Haha, it's funnier to me that I'm the guy that came to mind for this vision.

About Mario: he's got to boost somewhere. KH has some potential in his theory, but I still feel like a game's release is going to affect characters more than a company's decline due to the loss of hype of a game. With SMG being tons bigger than SMS (and arguably on par with SM64) and SSBB being the current GotY (if not the game of the past two generations and/or decade), I have to believe Mario will still boost. Who knows how much, but it's bound to show somewhere.

95% of the hype for Brawl was "I wonder who's going to be in this one!"

The same went for Melee and the same will go for the next Smash. After that, it's just tourney***s and the occasional Smash fan playing it. Nintendo characters won't decrease, but I don't see any boosts in order. The reason Snake benefitted so much was because of the seperation between Nintendo fans and MGS fans.

We're going to use the scoring system that was introduced this year to evaluate Brawl? Imprecise doesn't even begin to describe the litany of criticism I have for taking that tack. Not to mention the game we *know* was a disappointment to expectations - Twilight Princess - is pretty much a mirror image of it when it comes to scoring.

But, hey, if you want to push it - exactly how much do you think TP gets when put in that poll with MGS4, GTA IV, Chains of Olympus, et al?

all I'm saying is that the hate is a vocal minority and that the vast majority really likes the game.

I'd put TP at about where Brawl finished, but that's mostly because the Wii is so dominant here. I think Brawl is a step up - though how much, I don't know. that poll was also taken a couple weeks after MGS4, so I don't know if it's as strong as it looks.

though if we're gonna play the validity game, I'll ask the same question about said poll. we'll know more about this at the end of the year obviously, but I expect Brawl to cruise pretty easily with some pretty good competition - you could argue MGS4 over Galaxy if you want. check out MGS4's scores, there's nothing like it on the site.

Karma Hunter | Posted 9/15/2008 9:16:43 PM | message detail
People that have played MGS4 like it, yeah, but the problem it has is the same as the PS3's - very little of the site HAS one. Even counting franchise votes - again, something that Brawl should be coming ahead on anyway - you'd still have to have virtually every person that played MGS4 prefer it to Brawl for that performance to be valid. That's not even considering the scenario of LFF - would you expect Brawl or MGS4 to benefit more from GTA4's absence?

Yeah, Brawl could cruise to victory in the final GotY. But right now that's just speculation, and not especially relevant to the current contest. If the implication is that Nintendo and Brawl are gonna come out looking like champs this time despite my proclamations - well, yeah. I'm just making a prediction here, after all. It just happens to be what I legitimately think will happen this time around.

Like I said, most of the excitement from Brawl came from who was going to be in the cast. Other than that, I can't see it doing much for them. As a matter of fact, it's probably the only thing keeping them from dropping given Nintendo's recent bout of asshattery.
transience | Posted 9/15/2008 9:29:48 PM | message detail
I agree that it wasn't a great showing for Brawl in that poll, but I think people are kinda looking to bury it a bit too much. it still won handily, just not as handily as we've all been scared to death of. if you go one-on-one I think it does even better - I mean, I'd expect Brawl to beat MGS4 better than Melee beat MGS2.

as for Zack, I think round 1 and round 2 could be very different since he's probably picture-sensitive. face pictures are not Zack's strength. he's not Kefka or anything, but he sure as hell ain't Mr. Buster Sword in round 2.

If Brawl goes 1v1 with MGS4 I think it *has* to do better proportionally because in a match where 100,000+ voters have to be shared between only two options, eventually MGS4 has to run out of people that have played it (I also would argue that while Brawl would probably beat MGS4 worse than Melee beat MGS2 in 2k4, it wouldn't be on the level that Melee would beat MGS2 NOW).

I'm not looking to bury Brawl here - remember, the best case scenario for it is pretty much the only way the upset I'd most like to see happens this year - but I find the chinks in its armor perturbing. And the Wii's performance on which system people would want to play for the rest of the year - taken two weeks after Brawl's release - is just confounding.

I was doing AC write-ups... and uh... I realize no one's ever humored Deckard Cain over Phoenix Wright. Why is that?

PW might be getting Nintendo SFFed from Bowser/Geno based offa his deplorable round 2 last year. Geno will be getting SMRPG SFFed from Bowser. Diablo as a series isn't terribly weak in this contest... and joke characters are stronger in this format.

Not like Phoenix is exactly the strongest thing out there. Seems a super duper upset pick waiting to happen here.
