Some Common Stat Topic Lingo Defined*~ SFF (Same Fanbase Factor) - Same Fanbase Factor is the theory that, if two contestants share a common fanbase, the weaker of the two options will underperform in a direct matchup. For instance, Link was expected to defeat Ganon with 65% of the vote in 2004, based on their 2003 values. Instead, Link collected near 88% of the vote, because the Zelda fanbase so clearly sided with him. However, take some SFF labels with a grain of salt, as many people will slap it onto any match that doesn't make total sense. This has caused a few SFF jokes, with LordOfDabu's "Some Frivolous Factor" being the funniest of them. X-Stats - Short form of Extrapolated Statistics, aka the mathematical "strength" of a contestant that can be determined based on their performance in any given matchup. See above for a detailed explanation of the x-stat process. rSFF (Reverse Same Fanbase Factor): An unproven theory that states that an SFF match will feature the expected weaker character receiving more benefit from SFF than the stronger character. For example, all evidence supports Samus being indirectly stronger than Mario, yet Mario blew Samus away during their 2005 match. That's rSFF in action, and the one case we have of the weaker statistical character winning with it. For other information, surf the contest sites a bit. They have everything. --- MY BROTHERS WILL NOT HAVE DIED IN VAIN! Now Playing: Final Fantasy 4 DS, Spore ~*ST*~ |

Can we please stop saying the Nintendo Power Hour, when we've seen
proof that the opening hours are simply more casual than the rest of
the night in other ways as well? A) Master Chief seemed to do noticably better in these hours last year. B) "Grade School Students" did noticably better in the opening hour in the recent poll on what age GameFAQS visitors are. --- You need to meet someone at a garden, or a movie or something. Some thoughts on WCC, since some of the discussion from the other topic will probably bleed into this one. L-Block had a static percentage of 29%. Now, WCC's will obviously be much less due to its lack of universality, so I would put it at 25% *at the most*, among reasonable competition*. Would anyone dispute that? Now, even if the other three characters split the vote evenly, WCC would have trouble advancing. However, the other three characters *won't* split the vote evenly. Tails will do a little worse than the others, allowing Tidus and Donkey Kong to pass through. *This is assuming that Weighted Companion Cube functions along joke percentage lines in the way that L-Block did --- You need to meet someone at a garden, or a movie or something. Somehow I get the feeling that people are just going to get sick of
voting for Sanbags and cubes and blocks and Jinjos and Mudkipz or
whatever else we end up with. Possible, but the two strongest characters ever are currently getting wiped out by those collective joke entries. It's not an official poll, obviously, but with the contest only a few days away, this definitely has me rethinking things. --- Yoblazer: NO LIMITZ Watch and you'll see... someday I'll be... part of your world! |

I don't think this poll tells us anything. Link had around 7 or 8 times
as manyy people predicting him to win in 2003 as Cloud did. While these
kind of predictions can be useful at times when dealing with unknown
entrants, there's an obvious reason as to why this poll is going the
way it is. People saw what happened last contest and are adjusting
their brackets accordingly. Doesn't mean they're voting that way. -- You need to meet someone at a garden, or a movie or something. Somewhere classy. Like a cooking recipe message board or something.--True Godhand/Curt |
greatone10 | Posted 9/13/2008 9:54:56 PM | message detail |
There is one other thing to consider. This is asking us who we think
will win. No one's actual opinion is being asked. They may not actually
vote for these blocks and sanbags when match time comes. Plus, none of
them have a joke first round that includes scrubs like Nathan Hale and
Laharl that were just not gettng votes. --- Donkey Kong Country 2 for next Games contest. Brawl FC: 3050-7287-5564 Kart FC: 3738-0020-0896 |

this doesn't have me rethinking anything. this is, quite frankly,
expected, and I don't know why anybody would think a joke like that
would get old. I guess when you're surrounded by board 8ers who get
really into it you lose perspective? Don't all jokes get old? Well, you're probably right about this one. I've forgotten that L-Block mania only lasted a couple weeks or so, and that it happened a year ago. For all we know, there are 30,000 guys F5ing right now and just waiting to recreate madness. This puts me in an ugly spot, though. I know I won't enjoy a contest where the legit characters get trounced and all this discussion we've had means nothing, but I'd still like to wind things up with a decent bracket. Heh, I usually let the argument of Favoritism vs. Reason decide one or two tough matches in a bracket. all jokes get old, but this isn't something that's been beaten to
death. this is something that essentially happened over a one week
