Saying that for SFF to have effect the characters have to have an
obvious comparison is a little naive I think after everything we have
seen in these contests. I mean why did Leon and Dante SFF so bad last
year? We can't seriously think everyone knows they are both Capcom
characters and yet that was one of the worst cases of the last contest.
They are comparable though... I guess.. if you reach, so how about Mega
Man Mario, how do those two compare? -Mega goes toe to toe with Sonic -Mario throttles Sonic characters with SFF -Mario throttles Mega as well. But SFF characters having an obvious comparison is a main condition of SFF. And why is everyone so convinced Leon and Dante SFF was that bad? Sure they probably hurt each other a bit, but Pikachu was likely just that strong. Look at how he manhandled Tidus in the first round where no SFF was present. Dante and Leon are both PS2 Capcom action game stars with similar attitudes. Magus and Phoenix have absolutely nothing common. Not game genre, not character traits, not company affiliation and their games are 10 years apart. You could possibly make a small argument for SFF there after CT:DS comes out, but even then it is a stretch. The only anomaly there is Chrono Trigger characters continuing to fall off the map last year. Mega Man Mario and Sonic are all 2-D platforming icons that made their marks in the 8 and 16 bit eras. Then you have the fact that all the popular Mega Man games were on Nintendo consoles, and now Sonic has all his latest games and his Smash appearance creating even more overlap. We already saw how Nintendo and Mega Man have clear overlap, and last year was a pretty damn good example of Nintendo/Sonic overlap in the Yoshi/Knuckles matches. |

Sure they probably hurt each other a bit, but Pikachu was likely just

This contest we will finally see that that fluke last year wasn't
because of LFF between Dante and Leon... at least, in my opinion.
Probably some other reason(s), such as the pic-factor. I've got MC >

What does Earthbound, a cult SNES RPG with a decidedly goofy tone, have in common with Shadow of the Colossus, a not quite as but still fairly cult PS2 action/adventure game known for it's complete lack of population and general air of emptiness? Not much, but they're my two favourite games. While SSF is naturally far more likely between characters/games with obvious shared fanbases, it isn't impossible for two characters/games to have shared fanbases for no apparent reason. Like I said, I've seen a disproportionate number of PW fans who also love CT. I'm not saying it's a serious factor, it was just an odd observation I made based on Magus doing so amazingly bad and my observations of a sample I admit is way too small to make any conclusion based on. --- A season of our stolen youth shall teach old hearts to break ~Primordial-The Coffin Ships |

Even if it starts on time, and Tuesday would make a difference, there's
no match that would be on a Tuesday involving Blizzard characters
anyway (unless Hogger's round 2 or Arthas's round 3 match would be... I

If Ness suddenly gets a 90-10 beatdown on Wander, your argument may have merit. Just because the very very very small minority (Board 8 users) seem to have a hard-on for anything non-mainstream, doesn't mean that the other 150,000 voters have this same complex. |
