what do you mean nearly,it's an ulti style blowout and Ness sure did well against liquid/alucard,there wasn't even a freakin nintendo character to leach his votes.

You know, I've actually played a good amount of CoD4, but I didn't remember that name at all. The series doesn't really do much for name recognition, so I'm expecting Capt to stick around Hale's level...

I doubt Pikachu drains as much of Ike's SSB vote as some of you are thinking. Pikachu is considered one of the more 'annoying' characters by casuals and even non-casuals; Ike is going to hurt Pikachu more than Pikachu hurts him. Not to mention Pokemon seems to be more seperate from other Nintendo characters anyway.

MyWorldIsCrono | Posted 8/23/2008 1:46:33 PM | message detail
ikes only mass appeal is being in SSB. If you think that a mediocre received and low selling series will help Ike do anything, you're wrong. So his only support is same fanbase as Pikachu from SSB, not countign the pokemon factor.

For the record, through my experience, casuals LOVE Pikachu solely for his down-B.

Ike's better casual bait, yeah, but Pikachu's no casual scrub and he's been in all the SSB-games.

True, but it's just about their charisma. Ike's not the kind of guy I see casuals picking Pikachu over, really. It'd be like asking them to pick Jigglypuff over him (well not as bad as Jiggly, but still).

If Arthas makes it (a realistic possibility), I very much doubt anyone but ratface would be joining him. It's painful to admit, but Pikachu did really, really well last year. Even in his swan song, he managed to sneak within 5% of Luigi, finishing with 18% of the vote against the impressive line-up of Luigi, Dante, and Chief.

Can post-Brawl Ike manage something similarly impressive? Doubtful. I still have him moving on with Pikachu, but if I start to gravitate toward Arthas sometime, it'll be Ike who gets the boot.

I don't know why Bacon bothers putting up the character descriptions. No one seems to use them.

And before I continue, I know fully well that Arthas advancing is a possibility and that it could go either way. With that said, I am still arguing and rooting for Ike 100% of the way.

And no, there's no way Ike does as well as Pikachu. Pokemon are...different.

That sort of thing doesn't really happen. When people don't know any of the characters they just don't vote or bracket vote, and Ike will have the bracket advantage anyway.

If I don't know any of the characters in the poll I vote for the one I think I would like most. Arthas would definitely fit the bill there. <<

Ike with the bracket advantage? If I remember correctly, Pikachu was favored to win his four-pack over Tidus/Isaac/Serge while both Gordon and Duke were favored over Ike...

...now, Ike'll have more faith behind him this year, but Pikachu's gonna rock him on bracket support.

I'd say Arthas would have bracket advantage over Ike. Ike is more well known on b8, but the bracket is more close to the general gaming populace (reason that GTA Characters and MC were always Bracket picks), and Arthas is more well known among the gaming public then Ike. I mean hell, the pic of Arthas from the Frozen Throne box is one of the most popular video game avatars (I've seen at least 50 different people on different forums of that avatar of Arthas)

I'm well-aware, but Marth also had shoddy bracket-support last year. Tougher opponents and he was new, yes, but it still stands. In the four-way in question, Pikachu is by FAR the most well-known name, the most recognizable by picture, the most successful in last year's contest, and comes from the biggest series. Throw in the trends seen last year that Pika will probably still have better bracket-support, and Ike's not contending with Pikachu on bracket-support.

Shifting gears a bit, what do you guys think of Roxas possibly upsetting Liquid Snake? We all saw how well Axel did last year, and Roxas was cursed with an awful first round match. If anything, I'd consider Axel's strength last year to represent a very conservative strength value for Roxas (though I hesitate to say "floor"), but I have no idea just what roll, if any, Liquid played in MGS4.

Ah, my bad...

...probably by the people who don't keep up with contests, probably not by the people around here. I imagine Ike and Arthas will be close to equal on bracket-support, with Arthas having the edge in numbers but Ike having the edge in dedication.

In the general public, Arthas is definently more well known due to the hype of Wrath of the Lich King, and Warcraft 3 and World of Warcraft being huge selling games. SSBB sold what, 5 million or so? Thats abotu the same as Warcraft 3, PLUS theres World of Warcraft which blows away the Fire Emblem games in sales. Maybe Ike is more well known in general on this site, but not in general gaming public.

Liquid was kind of important in MGS4, I think. I considered Roxas but Neku being there was what kept me. Every little thing counts in an untested character.

And yeah, casuals will mostly pick Pikachu>Ike mostly while it'll be even here. But like I said, every little thing counts.

Well, Axel barely lost to Frog last year who barely beat Liquid four years ago. Riku barely beat Hayabusa pre-NG2 when Roxas left and we know Riku > Roxas...and I would think Liquid would keep up with Hayabusa if not win it. Liquid barely beat Alucard and Ness last year, two opponents I'd find tough for Roxas. We also remember Solid smashing Sora, and some assume Solid smashed Riku too...though Solid >> Liquid, Liquid may have that x-factor in his favor. There's a big Metal Gear fervor going on lately, too, and Square not announcing KH3 this year was a missed opportunity for hype...

...Roxas is in the match, but I like Liquid a lot in it.
