Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 552

L-Block was something special. It was representing Tetris, a game that basically every gamer has played. L-Block will no doubt be weaker this contest than it ever was last contest, so I find it hard to believe any joke entrant will do as well as the Block.

A joke character won't be able to do anything one-on-one. There's no way even 4chan can get Bidoof 50% against even someone like Kefka.

Also, this contest will be somewhat unpredictable because last year's contest was essentially useless for stats, and we haven't seen a lot of characters in a real contest since 2005 due to that female bracket.

The only reason L-Block got in is the same reason Ron Paul got votes.

Everyone wanted in on the joke.

L-Block was one of those 'right place, right time' sort of things. I wouldn't bet on it, or any other joke character, repeating that same success, regardless of format. Reminds me of StarCraft in that way - but maybe I'm wrong.

StarCraft wasn't a joke series, though, it's probably the most important RTS in the history of the genre with loads of online support. It just got the 16th seed because PC games were so royally screwed in nominations (everyone only got to vote for one PC game).

You say that, Ulti, but the moment we get our first great match that attitude will change.

Last contest's first division had more entertaining matches than all of 2006 pre-Battle Royale.

Dude even last year, I barely cared. Fighting it out for second place is lame. L-Block was the only part of that contest worth looking at.

Starcraft is more of a joke than Tetris. People have been trying to get a Tetris piece into the contest since 2003, long before anybody gave a damn about Starcraft being in a contest setting.

I stopped caring about the L-Block when I started beating out characters I really liked.

And that was the second round. I didn't care when he was knocking out Laharl or Nathan Hale, but when he took out Kirby, I was done.

I, too, stopped caring after the second round. The first round was fun to watch to see who would syphon off votes from who, but after that it was pure apathy.

L-Block wasn't some mere 4chan candidate. The entire internet was behind him. There was a freaking Digg article encouraging people to vote for it that reached the front page!

And I agree we won't see anyone repeat that run, especially in a 1v1 situation, including L-Block itself.

Well, I wasn't necessarily saying that StarCraft was a 'joke' or anything, but that its run was reminiscent of L-Block's. Can't say I'd expect either one to have a repeat performance. Even if this is a four-way, I doubt we have a bunch of joke characters "ruining" it or whatever.

Eh, I prefer matches worth watching over seeing 10+ days of 66/34 matches. Maybe it's just me, but I'd take a contest with matches that aren't boring as hell over something with maybe 6 worthwhile matches out of 50.

An underdog or overlooked seed, yes, I agree completely. Though comparing it to L-Block I cannot do because StarCraft got far because people liked the series while L-Block got far because people wanted to see how far the joke would go.

I'm just not a fan of serious talk on L-Block's progress because it was a crazy absurdity that people latched onto.

I'd like to see a 1v1 contest. As awesome as the 4-way was, another one would be a bit too much. I'm not entirely opposed to gimmicks as a vanilla contest would probably be dull unless the bracket was done beautifully, but then it'd be hard to really find a good gimmick considering the ones we've had before (LOL Villains/Female).

Though we're kinda running out of things to do. But I wouldn't mind next year's character contest having a crazy gimmick like the fourway that really breathed new air into the contest.

LeonhartFour | Posted 8/8/2008 6:34:32 PM | message detail
I'm not sure which format you're advocating then. Plenty of the fourway matches were boring. The contest honestly turned out better than I was expecting (I really wasn't expecting as many close matches as I did), but when it's someone battling for third place rather than second place, I don't care.

And when they're battling for first when both advance anyway, that sort of takes some of the drama away. Probably the best matches were Samus/Frog/Axel/Kerrigan and Magus/Phoenix/Bomberman/Crash where the race was for who would survive and who would be gone.

Plenty of the fourway matches were boring.

I can count the number of 1v1 matches in 2006 that were interesting for over 5-10 minutes on one hand. 2007 had tons of matches that were entertaining for at least 30 minutes.

The number interesting on one hand?

Let's see...

Peach/Jill
Tifa/Samus
Yoshi/Dante
Ganon/Vincent
Sonic/Crono
Sub-Zero/MC
Battle Royale Day 3

And that's only counting close matches. There are others I enjoyed that weren't that close (Sonic/Snake, Snake/Mega Man, for example).

2006 was bad, but it wasn't THAT bad.

There's a huge difference. In one, Snake beats Sephiroth. In the other, Snake gets owned by a Tetris block!

That's why Battle Royale > 2007 Contest!

I didn't say the fourways were dumb. I enjoyed the 2007 contest for what it was: A one-time gimmick. I just think they can get stale too easily. Keep it a gimmick, and it's fine. When it ceases to become a gimmick, that's not fine. Seriously, if we get another one, I think we'll hear plenty of complaints about how BORING it is.

And I'm sorry I didn't enjoy L-Block's matches. I can't enjoy it when he's beating Kirby, Snake, Sonic, Squall, and Cloud.

Was L-Block really a joke if he beat strong competitors? True, he wouldn't replicate such success in a 1v1 setting, or likely even in another fourway contest, but he did win fairly. He may have initially got in as a joke, but his supporters genuinely wanted him to win.

Wait, why am I using masculine pronouns for a Tetris block.
