Have you noticed that every poll in which GTA has done well for itself
is from 2004 or earlier (that is, BEFORE the Nintendo Boost)? And
rallying or not, GTA still lost to Warcraft. I really doubt it would've
lost a few years ago. The fact that LoZ:TP "only" did 5% better against them than SMG against its opponents shows me just how much stronger LoZ:TP is than SMG. http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=2995 Yeah, not much. And all of the SFF arguments for TP work just as much for Galaxy. You can give the extra 4.5% of Wind Waker completely to TP if you want, but I doubt it'd get all of it. Interesting to see that Mario Galaxy still beat San Andreas cleanly even with all of the Nintendo LFF going on in that poll. Man, I'm glad you brought up the TP/Galaxy comparisons. That poll speaks more for me than any other argument will. GTAIV isn't going to be much stronger than San Andreas, if at all. --- "But you have been given freedom. Freedom to be...outside." |

Still, there aren't enough polls of GTA games to really say too well -- there haven't been many related polls to it in the past four years. And rallying or not, GTA still lost to Warcraft. I really doubt it would've lost a few years ago. I mean, probably if it was soon after GTA:SA's release. If you mean before that though...a series of just GTA3, GTA:SA, and the largely-ignored 2D games would have lost to WC anyway unless WoW wasn't out then either. --- I love RPGGamer0. You're the man HaR! As to this argument, though, I think Leon's got you there. There were two games (FFX/SA) in that GotD lineup that should have been able to run SFF free and had no excuse to not put up solid numbers. I think GTA still had some push left in 2005. San Andreas almost broke
the Top 10 in the Top 100 Games List, and Vercetti was just as strong
as ever that year. But yeah, I don't know what happened after that. Part of me wants to say that GTA Vs. Warcraft is an anamoly, but Vercetti really sucked it up in his match this past year. --- You need to meet someone at a garden, or a movie or something. Somewhere classy. | I still think GTA IV revitalised the
franchise,after SA we kept seeing bad things for the series,I mean CJ
losing to Ness was a surprise. but GTA IV seems more like a fresh start,it got more publicity(at least in the UK) than any other GTA game i can remember,it's been well received,high sales and a main character who is far more likeable than CJ. Vercetti's drop in power is understandable but I think GTA IV would get hammered by SMG but i'd still put it over recent big name FPS games. Vercetti was just as strong as ever that year. That performance against Kefka was pathetic (Most people on the board expected Vercetti to win that one easily, if you'll recall), and Crono got 70% on him, compared to the 66% Mega Man got on him in 2003. GTA hasn't got any more popular between SA and IV because the only
games it produced were PSP games. The people who bought the PSP games
were mainly those who had a keen interest in the games already, it
rarely got any new fans because of that. Therefore, we have seen
Vercetti flop recently, but with GTAIV I still think that the series
has become popular again and we might see an unpredicted number of
votes for it. Also, when does GTAIV come out for PC, if ever? --- Look at this sig hard enough and you will find the combination to the lock. |

Ah, overlooked your last argument...killer point. I still think GTA4
> GTA:SA and that GTA:SA wouldn't do so well in a multi-poll like
that now -- I figure GTA games don't stand the test of time like many
others do...but it's no excuse for it to not compare to an SFF'd SMG or
RE4 at the least. Point taken, SMG > GTA4... ...but I still can't stress enough I think we've seen two of the strongest upcoming new games since we've started having GotY-polls. How many people consider SSBB stronger now than SSBM ever was? SSBB has been arguably the most hyped game this site has ever seen; remember the upcoming-Wii-title poll from last year, when it had like ~60% over SMG, MP3, and some others? Who remembers the super-easy predictions that SSBB would destroy SMG on its way to becoming GotY last year before the release date was pushed back? Couple that with MGS4 getting killer reviews, sounding like it's the best MGS game to date, and selling pretty amazing for a PS3 game (definitely more than I thought it would at this point)...just saying, GTA4 has been shafted at looking too good this year. Anyway, gotta argue about something else you said..... Yeah, not much. And all of the SFF arguments for TP work just as much for Galaxy. You can give the extra 4.5% of Wind Waker completely to TP if you want, but I doubt it'd get all of it. I doubt LoZ:TP would completely absorb LoZ:WW too, but Link showed through the Battle Royale in 2k6 that he'll take most of the Nintendo support when other Nintendo factors are removed... http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=2562 http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=2563 http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=2564 ...Samus has 7.74% on the first day. When she lost, Link rose 7.5% while Mario oddly dropped 0.41%. Mario had 11.18% on the second day. When he lost, Link rose 7.77% -- still well over half of Mario's support... ...games =/= characters and such, but if Link can do that with supporters of Mario and Samus, then I can see LoZ:TP doing something similar to that with supporters of LoZ:WW and MP. It's not unreasonable since LoZ:TP can relate to fans of those two games more than SMG does and people argued that LoZ:WW would be weaker now that LoZ:TP is out. It doesn't hurt that LoZ:TP shares the Gamecube with those two titles either, though that's likely a mute point. Assuming that this theory's the case, if Link can take 15.27% of the 18.92% other Nintendo mascots had, then LoZ:TP could arguably take 8+% of the 10.82% that the 2002/2003-GotY's had. Let's be generous and say LoZ:TP only got 7% of it though and SMG got 2%, then spread the last 1.82% evenly to the other three games... 2001: Final Fantasy X 25.36% 2004: Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas 14.55% 2005: Resident Evil 4 18.83% 2006: Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess 23.86% 2007: Super Mario Galaxy 17.4% ...instant huge separation, and fully using the Link-example would suggest an even bigger difference between LoZ:TP and SMG while giving the other games a little bit less. This says LoZ:TP when LFF'd by another A+-Wii game can still compete with FFX, something I question SMG could do with FFX without being sandbagged by another Nintendo game. I've heard legit talk of LoZ:TP beating several of the site's top games ranging from FF3/6 to LoZ:LttP, but I never heard discussion of SMG doing it or even being on that same edge of doing so as games like FFX, and this example based off of what Link did to Mario and Samus backs that up. I just don't think you can say SMG and LoZ:TP are near the same level by any means, and I don't really think their GotY-competition was either. I'd probably take Gear > Halo 3, FF12 certainly would beat Halo 3 and could fight with CoD4 one-on-one (probably just off of brand-name), FF12/Gears have almost no similar fanbase whereas CoD4/Halo 3 debates arose since their releases, and LoZ:TP beat FF12/Gears by 5% more than SMG beat CoD4/Halo 3. Those are huge reasons to say LoZ:TP is well above SMG by GotY-polls alone, then the example above backs this up...and, lastly, did anybody ever really expect SMG to be as strong as LoZ:TP since they were even announced? One other thing about GTA4/MGS4 then I'd kinda like to drop it -- I catch myself see-sawing between SMG and GTA4 now: http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=3135 26.91% of the site has a PS3 on June 1st. On June 30th, 26.78% say MGS4 has been the best game so far this year. Is it fair to say GTA4 is a sign of a downward spiral when its 360-owners probably-nearly-alone has 25.25% and SSBB has 35.45% and it seems the PS3-community is united with MGS4? Although the one thing I don't like is his "omg you guys are soooo
annoying" attitude when all he would have needed to do is take 10
seconds to sticky a B8 topic with that same content back in April when
I originally asked him about it. But anyways... for the guy asking to see match writeups, yes, we have every past match on its own page along with full stats and graphs and analysis of the results over on the wiki. this year: Yoshi's now got 0.71% more women on his side! More seriously, turned out I was wrong about the 1.5% boost in women according to this: http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=2949 Not that I'm gonna take that kind of boost seriously right now, but will say to my experience that I can't think of any women that play games and do not adore Yoshi. This ranges from women who love Yoshi's Story to LoZ:MM to Rock Band. didn't like him for not having a third jump in SSB/M. Yoshi's not a
good fighter so I don't expect a lot from him SSBB-wise, but he's a bit
