Has anyone attempted to answer some of these mini-contests? The one at
the moment is about how much disk space is used for archived topics. I
have no idea but I'm gonna guess about 3GB... does that sound about

Let's pretend for a moment that there's going to be no tournament bracket contest this year. Due to the overall success of the project, I think I'm going to make it a yearly event, though I might change the month next year so it doesn't overlap E3 again. ;) That would be devastating. --- "Ah, a party! I'm trying to wait for N to come back from his vacation -- he didn't
say when he'd be back, but it's been four or five days already since he
left and I wouldn't think it would last much longer. On top of that,
the mini-contests will be going on for about two more weeks and we
haven't hit Ngamer's original goal of 250 signs yet... ...if it gets 250 signs and/or gets too close to the end of the mini-contests, I'll send SB the petition. Otherwise, it's been Ngamer's project and baby; I'd much rather him send it in and present it himself than me or somebody else do it for him. It's a matter of respect, is all. --- I love RPGGamer0. Ah, I guess I'll defend my pick real quick (though it can go either way!): When SMG won the GotY last year, it wasn't terribly impressive; it got 47% against two FPS's that made their name mainly on the 360 (though CoD4 had the PS3, too), which is the least impressive GotY-victory since probably 2004. We then saw it matched up against LoZ:TP with LoZ:WW in the GotC-poll and still lost by ~1.5%, so SMG isn't unreachable. I'll also give GTA4 the benefit of the doubt due to its incredible reviews, sales, and a more likable main character that it's a clear notch ahead of GTA:SA. We've seen GTA:VC compete with SSBM and GTA4 has been up against much tougher and more diverse competition for GotY this year than SMG, so I'm inclined to take GTA4. --- I love RPGGamer0. I consider the PS3 and especially MGS4 crowd really hardcore. There is
almost no way it would beat GTA4 one-on-one right now. Before the end
of the year, it could happen, but the game and system needs to get out

Yeah, I think you're selling Call of Duty way short. It beat the mess
out of Halo 3, which is no small task. And I can't believe that you, of
all people, are selling Halo 3 short. Galaxy smoked it, and that counts
for something. And I'll be honest with you: I think GTA's hey day around GameFAQs is over. I just don't think it's as popular around here as it used to be. We've seen Vercetti absolutely plummet since 2003, CJ bombed, the GTA series bombed, etc. I wouldn't give it a chance against Galaxy right now. --- "But you have been given freedom. I don't mean to hate on CoD4 -- it was clearly the runner-up for GotY
here, GotY at many other places, better than Halo at its own game, and
multi-platform. CoD4 would be a respectable contender in a contest.
That said, Halo 3 is widely considered the worst of the series,
FPS-games are typically less favored, and the 360 and PS3 don't match
up to the popularity or ownership of the Wii here. In hindsight, I just think SMG not being able to beat the two FPS's worse makes me wonder how close CoD4 could get to SMG one-on-one, and I'm not putting CoD4 anywhere close to the likes of SM64 or SMW. Because of that, it reconfirms my thoughts that SMG would come short against the likes of SM64 or SMW...and since GTA:VC was arguably on their level years ago, GTA4 could reasonably match or beat that. Assuming all that, I don't think SMG is a safe bet in this match-up. I could be wrong on something and SMG has a chance, but this thought process feels safe enough..... --- I love RPGGamer0. I highly doubt Call of Duty would get destroyed too badly by Mario
World or Mario 64, no worse than Galaxy did. And it's not like FPS
games have done horribly in GotY polls before. Galaxy practically
doubled both of those games, and neither one would be a slouch in a
contest environment. I think you're just selling Galaxy a bit short and
overselling GTAIV. The fact that a PS3-only game beat it out doesn't
speak well for it, MGS hardcore fans or not. That wouldn't have
happened a few years ago. I seem to remember GTAIII beating MGS2
handily in 2001, if I'm not mistaken. http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=776 Heh, it even beat Melee back then. And didn't you just say that the 360 and PS3 don't have the ownership the Wii does? Doesn't that go against your argument for GTAIV? Of course it counts for something, and they would have strength. I'm just saying it's tainted because Halo 3 had to compete with a better FPS in the same poll. Let's take Sephiroth/MK/Peach/CATS from last year and ignore CATS for this. Sephiroth was going to clearly beat Peach anyway, but having MK in the poll too made Peach look a lot worse against Sephiroth. Make it one-on-one, and it won't be so impressive at her expense. Same thing: SMG clearly wins over Halo 3, but it smoked Halo 3 like it did solely because of CoD4. It's not like SMG would be close to doubling either of them one-on-one. And I'll be honest with you: I think GTA's hey day around GameFAQs is over. I just don't think it's as popular around here as it used to be. We've seen Vercetti absolutely plummet since 2003, CJ bombed, the GTA series bombed, etc. I wouldn't give it a chance against Galaxy right now. It could be the case, but I'm still giving the games the credit they've earned to this point. Its characters have almost never lived up to expectations (including one terrible example you left off: Tenpenny...what a waste in the Villain Contest) and -- while the Series Contest is a major blow -- it's worth noting that GTA did lose because of rallying. Game-wise though, GTA3 was second only to FFX in 2001, GTA:VC barely lost to MP in 2002, GTA:SA was GotY in 2004, and it even has a PSP-game that brought home a PSP-GotY award. GTA:SA/3/VC managed to still do very well in the Top 100 List, and GTA:VC hung tough with SSBM... ...the only flaw you can point to as far as GTA's polls about any specific game go would be our recent GotY-ish polls, and considering SSBB looks to be stronger than anything any GTA game has faced off against before (or, really, any GotY-winner we've seen the site run a poll over before), you can't hold too much against GTA4 in that regard. MGS4, maybe, but also keep in mind that MGS4 looks to be the best-received MGS game to date and it's nearly sold as much in a month as MGS3 did period, not to mention that it's important justification to many who own a PS3. Knowing that and comparing it to this... http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=1872 ...I think MGS4 > GTA4 in this poll that probably favors the hardcore more anyway is being blown out of proportion. It's notable and a bit shocking, especially if GTA4 > GTA:SA, , but it's not so bad and astounding. I think it's much more that MGS4 is surprising than GTA4 is flopping. Either way... The fact that a PS3-only game beat it out doesn't speak well for it, MGS hardcore fans or not. ...many of those same PS3 people would also vote for GTA4 in a poll that doesn't have MGS4 in it. I think if SB would have run a GotY-ish poll right before MGS4 came out instead of right after, GTA4 would have been looking notably better against SSBB. Same thing with GTA4 in a match against SMG if MGS4 isn't in it. I seem to remember GTAIII beating MGS2 handily in 2001, if I'm not mistaken. MGS2 was love/hate, I don't think GTA became so hated yet, and there was also another PS2 game in FFX taking lots of votes. Twilight Princess, a game that was much more prominently hyped, only managed 52% against the disappointing FFXII and Gears of War the year prior FF12 and Gears are two very different kinds of games on different systems whereas CoD4 and Halo 3 are not, plus I understand that the 360 community feel like Gears > Halo 3. The fact that LoZ:TP "only" did 5% better against them than SMG against its opponents shows me just how much stronger LoZ:TP is than SMG. RE4 only got 55% against terrible competition (Mario Kart DS and God of War - remember that the sequel didn't even make it to Galaxy's final poll.).
