Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 551

Mentioned in the last topic I wanted to make this early and cut out a bunch of the links. I hope you guys like it.

Oh yeah, the links...

A = Strongest Character
B = Character Weaker than A

To figure out a character's Xsts Percentage ---> [(CvB)(BvA)]/50 = CvA
To compare how C would do against B ---> [(CvA)/(BvA)]*50 = CvB
To figure out how B would do against A ---> [(CvA)/(CvB)]*50 = BvA

~*Say What? Some Common Stat Topic Lingo Defined*~

SFF (Same Fanbase Factor) - Same Fanbase Factor is the theory that, if two contestants share a common fanbase, the weaker of the two options will underperform in a direct matchup. For instance, Link was expected to defeat Ganon with 65% of the vote in 2004, based on their 2003 values. Instead, Link collected near 88% of the vote, because the Zelda fanbase so clearly sided with him. However, take some SFF labels with a grain of salt, as many people will slap it onto any match that doesn't make total sense. This has caused a few SFF jokes, with LordOfDabu's "Some Frivolous Factor" being the funniest of them.

X-Stats - Short form of Extrapolated Statistics, aka the mathematical "strength" of a contestant that can be determined based on their performance in any given matchup. See above for a detailed explanation of the x-stat process.

rSFF (Reverse Same Fanbase Factor): An unproven theory that states that an SFF match will feature the expected weaker character receiving more benefit from SFF than the stronger character. For example, all evidence supports Samus being indirectly stronger than Mario, yet Mario blew Samus away during their 2005 match. That's rSFF in action, and the one case we have of the weaker statistical character winning with it.

For other information, surf the contest sites a bit. They have everything.

Removed all the old and/or unused links that are no longer updated (Solarshadow's stuff), redundant links (such as the 8973465 links to the same three sites), and invalid links (such as RPGuy's poll updater). Added the wiki, a couple of definitions and moved the most important stuff to the top.

Hmmm...I better chime in. First, the one in this topic -- I'll talk about Ngamer's template from the last topic next.

-> The first link should be gamefaqscontest instead of sc2k5 for recognition's sake. Redirect or not, it's cleaner and will look better.
-> I appreciate the PCA's, but I would rather see a different link directly to them than see them be mentioned as a selling point of Board8Wiki. The site's cool enough to stand without advertising the PCA's as its big point, and likewise for the PCA's.
-> I don't think N's archive page /gamefaqs/ will be used enough to warrant being on there, though the x-stats calculator and the CS&D archive are priceless.
-> I'm glad you gave MMX credit for the contest site...
-> ...and the same goes for putting TRE's poll-page higher. It's a shame Aprosenf's site doesn't work anymore though -- that was helpful for finding every poll involving certain games or polls.
-> The x-stat formula's important, but I wonder if there's not a cleaner way for the front page to display it. Do you think we could have a link to it, then feature easy-to-follow examples of how to work each type of formula on it? I would think it would be easy enough to make a page for it, and if it's clearly labeled and near the top of the links then it shouldn't really be overlooked.
-> Can RockMFR be credited on the site instead of on the links? It's just weird to see his name beside the link when he only uploaded about four pictures (though they were crucial, not hating there).
-> The Acronyms section in the related link really needs updating. The acronyms could be ordered better -- as is, the relevant ones are jumbled with the outdated ones and the jokes. Plus...The Yoshi Factor and The Tanner Factor? I don't ever remember those being used...like, even once. Sure, I see where they're based from, but those terms look made up for the sake of filling space, honestly...
-> ...the lesson on percentages is particularly elitist, which is bad for people going there to learn. I would recommend rewriting that section, or at least cutting the intro to it...
-> ...and you should probably update your list of odd matches, too.
-> "Something Fishy Factor" is funnier!
-> If we're going to have definitions on the front page, I think we should have them at or near the top. SFF and x-stats are pretty much mandatory definitions at this point if we list definitions here, though I'm not sure rSFF is.

Now, Ngamer's template found here ( http://boards.gamefaqs.com/gfaqs/detail.php?board=8&topic=43735435&message=479114570 ). I'll try not repeating comments that applied to Ulti's template too:

-> creativename should be given credit since it's his site.
-> N hit it right with how to split the Board8Wike and the links to the contest matches, though I would probably put them side by side.
-> I don't think the all-time x-stats are useful/credible/easy enough to warrent front-paging. It's fun at a glance, and...then it's done.
-> The sortable table isn't special enough to get its own link. It's great, but it's regularly filler and it goes to the 2006 contest.
-> Give MMX some credit!
-> The full explanation of x-stats is cool, but I don't think it'll be too relevant to people learning them without seeing specific examples of matches be extrapolated through the formula given in the same way the formula's presented in the front page already. As is, the link's cuttable.
-> /gamefaqs/ should be easily findable on your site, but I don't think the front page is right for it.
-> creative's contest links are likely overkill on the front page, though nice to keep around.
-> The all-time top tens are probably front-page material...but can we narrow all of those into one link? If there was one page that would take you to choose between all those pages (and maybe list #1 for each category beside it each year for referencing), that would be a lot cleaner.
-> The Four-Pack of Fun board is on the edge of extinction, and if it wasn't for Leonhart coming back trying to breathe life into it again, I would have likely completely deserted it by now. Cuttable, but if it sticks around maybe there should be a tag mentioning what exactly the board does like "(predict and experiment tough matches here)" or something. As is, four-packs aren't definable to new people.
-> Can the Top 100 List be closer to the contest matches/results? It's still contest-related, however controversial.
-> Do people still use BL? I dunno if that definition's necessary.

Well, since it's getting boring here again... Here's a bunch of old notable posts I (and others) had from years ago. I actually had this saved maybe a year ago, but I don't think I ever posted this. Sorry if I have!

Between SC2K3 and SC2K4:
My opinion on popularity rankings outside of VG circles...though I really have no idea.
1. Samus
2. Cloud
3. Sephiroth
4. Crono
5. Solid Snake

Samus at #1...? Snake last...? What was I thinking...? Flip Snake and Samus around, and I think that's more-or-less correct.

Crono would undoubtedly destroy Magus, no doubt, looking at what he did to Kefka.

Yes, that's RAIGHT! (excuse the redundancy... or maybe that was indeed necessary)

As for Cecil, he would crash and burn in a Summer Contest.

RAIGHT again! For some reason I didn't think that anymore by the time SC2K5 rolled around. Huh. Influence of other users, I guess.

This gets me thinking...maybe Mario wasn't so underrated against Link as Sephiroth was OVERRATED in the battle against Link.
This is one of the very first mentions of the SC2K2 West Division Factor. Still, around this time I was still banking on Mario/Link SFF in 2K2. Of course, Link/Mario SFF is the popular opinion nowadays, but I'm still one of the bold few who'll say it was non-existent.

Ack, forgot about Kingdom Hearts vs. Soul Caliber...that one's tough, too, but I guess I'll say KH just because it supposedly helped Cloud/Sephiroth/Squall last year, heh.
Hey, I was like the only person in the whole topic that thought twice about KH/SC... I remember everyone's shock when Soul Calibur was leading for many hours.

3. Would Starcraft be more popular than the Golden Sun series?

Oh, geez, why'd I even ask that?

Since CJayC is going to put the stats in soon, I will make my predictions of what the prediction percentages will be (again, though these are new estimates). These were quickly done, so don't blame me for doing a so-so job. :P

Super Mario Bros. 3 - 94%
Metroid - 61%
Contra - 57%
Final Fantasy - 96%
Donkey Kong - 63%
Legend of Zelda - 99%
Pong - 71%
Tetris - 89%
Chrono Trigger - 88%
Super Mario RPG - 57%
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 - 84%
Super Mario World - 89%
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past - 97%
Super Metroid - 83%
Doom - 60%
Final Fantasy VI - 82%
Final Fantasy VII - 97%
Xenogears - 45%
Final Fantasy Tactics - 79%
Metal Gear Solid - 77%
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night - 41%
Goldeneye 007 - 90%
Super Mario 64 - 95%
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - 89%
Starcraft - 36%
Kingdom Hearts - 54%
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker - 91%
Metroid Prime vs. Half-Life - 65%
Final Fantasy Tactics Advance - 70%
Final Fantasy X - 94%
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City - 64%
Super Smash Bros. Melee - 61%

Compare these to the actual prediction percentages in Sp2K4. No, really. I think you'll be surprised.

You know, I had a feeling that Gordon would severely over-perform in this match.

However, I never thought the very early board vote would go against Gordon, and that he'd then come back. I kinda expected to see him winning early in fact, then steadily lose it. But I never thought he might get above 45% by the end, or actually have a shot to win. I really think people made too much of a joke out of Gordon, and thus underestimated him for this match (though just about nobody could've expected him to do this well).

Looks like Gordon is primed to take the lead in a few minutes. Amazing. And if Gordon/Sam ends up roughly 50/50, *if* Sam didn't decline extrapolated-wise (and I don't see why he should, though it's possible), that would mean Gordon gained almost 50% in terms of popularity, and 7.5%-8% in terms of % against Link--more than the 40% and 4.55% he gained from 2K2 to 2K3. Pretty incredible. Maybe Gordon's popularity goes up exponentially every year! At this rate, he'll win the whole thing in 2K6. Gordon Freeman in 2006!

Okay, so the final x-stats made Gordon Freeman look worse in SC2K4 than in SC2K3, but Gordon did rise in the x-stats the next two years. Funny stuff.

From:Leonhart (aka AmazingKirby):
Tidus/Kirby was destined to be. Kirby is my 3rd favorite character, and now he will have faced my #1 (Squall Leonhart), #2 (Tidus), and #4 (Ramza Beoulve) characters. Expect him to face Luigi next year.

Luigi/Kirby indeed occured! It still bugs me to this day how badly that match defied a simple comparison between performances against Squall... that's what happens when characters change in strength from year-to-year, though. Squall/Tidus also played.

Seriously, I think Ceej has got it out for me or something. Here's all of the matchups we've seen between my top 10 favorite characters:

Squall Leonhart vs. Tidus (2006)
Squall Leonhart vs. Solid Snake (2002, 2006, 2007) - And Squall, Tidus, and Snake were all in the same FOURPACK in 2006. Argh!
Squall Leonhart vs. Luigi (2003)
Squall Leonhart vs. Kirby (2004)
Squall Leonhart vs. Knuckles the Echidna (2005)
Tidus vs. Kirby (2005)
Solid Snake vs. Knuckles the Echidna (2002, 2003, 2004)
Solid Snake vs. Vyse (2007)
Solid Snake vs. Ryu (2003)
Luigi vs. Kirby (2006)
Kirby vs. Ramza Beoulve (2003)

That's 15 matches!

Seriously, we're probably going to see something along the lines of Snake/Luigi, Snake/Kirby, Kirby/Knuckles, or Luigi/Knuckles this year.

In case anyone's interested, I have completely finished doing hourly updates for every match in Summer 2005, and the are all listed here:

http://boards.gamefaqs.com/gfaqs/genmessage.php?board=572228&topic=43938411

I have a couple of bonus matches ahead of them as well.

Additionally, I made a list of the Top Vote Shifts of the 2005 Contest (basically anything over 10%):

http://boards.gamefaqs.com/gfaqs/genmessage.php?board=572228&topic=44212166

Here's a copy:

1. Master Chief Vs. Crono: 15.04%
2. Bowser Vs. Chun-Li: 13.62%
3. Sonic Vs. Tifa: 13.06%
4. Link Vs. Sephiroth: 12.72%
5. Master Chief Vs. Donkey Kong: 12.14%
6. Link Vs. Cloud: 11.38%
7. Bowser Vs. Ryu: 11.32%
8. Knuckles Vs. Squall: 11.28%
9. Snake Vs. Bowser: 10.89%
10. Tifa Vs. Luigi: 10.62%
11. Ganondorf Vs. Auron: 10.62%
12. Yoshi Vs. Laharl: 10.31%
13. Mario Vs. Snake: 10.24%
14. Luigi Vs. KOS-MOS: 10.16%

Keep in mind that this is just for 2005. Also, Dante Vs. Vincent wins the record for most consistent match of the year. The vote shift is under 3% for the entire match if I recall correctly.

I also found it interesting to note that Sonic has lost at least one hourly update to a non-Noble Niner in almost every conventional contest he's been in:

2003: Aeris, and possibly Zero as well
2004: Ryu
2005: Tifa
2006: Vincent

Hell, he may have even lost one to Tidus in 2002. Who knows?

Just out of curiosity, would everyone agree that this is the definitive list of matches in which a Noble Niner has lost at least one hourly update to a non-Noble niner:

2002: None. I honestly can't think of any other than Sonic Vs. Tidus and Samus Vs. Ryu where this might have been close to this occurring.
2003*: Sonic Vs. Aeris,
2004: Sonic Vs. Ryu**, Frog Vs. Snake
2005: Sonic Vs. Tifa, Snake Vs. Bowser
2006: Sonic Vs. Vincent, Samus Vs. Tifa**

*Sonic Vs. Zero possible as well.
**The actual lead was lost in this match as well, not just hourly updates

I've found a list that was made by the board last year of characters that have never made it to a contest. IIRC it was made during the bracket predicting of last year's contest. It's a long list though some of the characters here could be interesting in a contest setting or if you're making a mock bracket and would like some unused fodder to be the filler.

Actually Charizard is the only one on that list that could do anything, but half of fun is to get your obscure characters into the contest.

Keep Tron Bonne out of here unless she's going to be on the end of a 95-5 beat down at Link's or Mega Man's hand.
