you mean Green/Blue right? looking back on some popular japanese franchises i'm surprised at the lack of DQ characters as well as power pro's no show. Since l-block is now eligible can vehicles now enter too? like the highwind or other stuff like it. --- Day Brawl was supposed to arrive by mail:02/07/2008 Damn the Royal Mail. |

I'd rather not see something like the Highwind in these contests.

Joke characters have been allowed in since day one. Literally. The
Highwind is as much a character as that damned moronic Servbot. Or better yet, the Carrier from Starcraft should have been allowed in back in 2003. ~*ST*~ --- http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb285/nekdolan/02.gif Now Playing: FF12, Twilight Princess, Crisis Core, Diablo 2, Etrian Odyssey 2 |

On a totally different note, and since I'm in a good mood, let's for
the sake of argument assume the Noble Nine never broke and Vincent >
Crono never happened. That would make Link the only character to lose outside the Noble Nine, I think. He also lost more than once, and both losses were to complete joke characters in sanctioned GameFAQs contest polls. Random fun every now and then is a good thing. ~*ST*~ --- http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb285/nekdolan/02.gif Now Playing: FF12, Twilight Princess, Crisis Core, Diablo 2, Etrian Odyssey 2 |

Nah, I still didn't like either outcome, although the Jay Solano thing
doesn't bother me because it was a Board 8 poll, essentially. --- "But you have been given freedom. Freedom to be...outside." |
voltch | Posted 7/10/2008 8:46:16 AM | message detail |
good fun is always good, jay's win was hilarious because it was a board
win,the Block started out funny but it felt less due to people taking
some sort of sadistic pleasure in seeing our pundits get it so wrong. so the fun was kinda spoilt and turned sort of bitter. It's true link is a dominant force but to whine and say FF sucks cos they always win etc is an old argument. I'm convinced link will end up dominating for around a decade and then drop like most dominant sportsman. |

That would make Link the only character to lose outside the Noble Nine, I think. Not unless you discount the entire Summer 2007 contest. It's always hilarious when the joke characters do surprisingly well
(L-Block, CATS, and I guess Master Hand counts as a joke character as
well). Though nominating stuff like the Highwind isn't really that clever. Oh boy, inanimate objects! At least the L-Block has some appeal in a very well-known game that doesn't have any characters. Airships aren't as funny as Tetris blocks. It's hard to find good joke characters, but for now I'm gonna pull for good ol' Balance Board. --- i got nuthin |

Is Vincent > Crono the closest legitimate break of the Noble Nine we have? I'm pretending the 2007 contest never happened (incidentally it looks like we won't have to pretend like the 2008 contest never happened...) specifically with L Block. It's a dumb concept, but I don't consider it broken until it falls in a 1 vs. 1 match. --- One of the most troublesome things in life is that what you do or do not want has little to do with what does or does not happen. ~ Lemony Snicket |

Ulti handed over the reigns for the freewebs site to Leo? That's cool, and a good choice. Falcon, there's a listing of all the close calls the NN has had on their wiki page. http://board8.wikia.com/wiki/Noble_Nine But I'll paste it in as long as I'm here. Though the NN has yet to be beaten, there have been several close calls over the years. The matches where an outside opponent has brought a member of the NN to below 55% are as follows: * Sonic over Zero, 52.34% in 2003 * Sonic over Aeris, 53.02% in 2003 * Snake over Frog, 51.39% in 2004 * Snake over Bowser, 50.59% in 2005 (1,196 vote margin) * Snake over Zelda, 54.41% in 2005 * Samus over Tifa, 50.49% in 2006 (1,418 vote margin) * Sonic over Vincent, 52.09% in 2006 * Mega Man over Sora, 54.28% in 2006 * Crono over Auron, 54.50% in 2006 So the closest ever was Bowser/Snake in terms of votes, or Tifa/Samus in terms of percent. --- Hot Content: thengamer.com/xstats | board8.wikia.com He isn't a killer. I definitely don't consider anything that happened in the 2007
contest legitimate, and the winner of the contest should be enough to
tell you why. L-Block got more votes, and they're legit votes as well. I don't see how it's any different from the usual rallying you see in Blizzard matches or in 2002 with Cloud/Mario. I don't see how a contest is less legitimate just because a joke character won. It just means a lot of people wanted to see a joke character win over Link and Cloud. L-Block's win wasn't tainted or anything, he legitimately beat his competition, and he did so in a spectacular way by starting off as an underdog and gaining strength and support throughout, kinda like Rocky. Yes, L-Block's run was unprecedented and different from how every other contest character performed over the years, but it doesn't make his run any less legitimate. ...dang it guys, we need 29 more posts so we can move on! MM9 is definitely bringing people back to Mega Man. I'd say it's about
equivalent to MMAC which happened between 2003 and 2004. there's
definitely a boost there but it's disguised by that match with Link.

cheating or anything like that. All I'm saying is that, one-on-one,
L-Block wouldn't have stood a chance. Ah, I agree in that case. I love how just as some of our old favorites are starting to slip, new games get announced to save them. Mega Man, Crono, Ryu, all should be pretty happy right now to have something substantial at least. Could Castlevania: Judgment help Alucard? It is a console game, even if fighting, and it does seem to be getting some buzz at least. He does play some roles in the portable games, but it doesn't seem like those really help him. Alucard's appearance in Judgment will probably be his biggest role since SotN, so I'm curious to see if it may at least keep him constant and prevent a drop like other old-school characters were experiencing. --- i got nuthin |

MM9 is hitting all the systems? AWESOME. I wonder how well it's going to sell though. I don't know what the numbers are for the 360 or PS3, but I know the Wii's VC-numbers have been...well, I don't know how to say it. A lot of people have bought ports of widely-owned games like SMB, so you might think a new $10 game would outsell them. At the same time, no Nintendo classic has passed 700,000 in sales, so why should an overdue sequel from a whored out franchise outdo them? It's hard to predict! I don't know which way MM9's sales will go on WiiWare, but I figure it will do the best on the Wii since that's where Mega Man made its claim to fame. If it doesn't do well there, it very well could flop in sales for the other systems... ...that said, there's a chance it could outsell MM2 and become the best selling Mega Man game to date. If I recall correctly, MM2 -- despite its classic status -- "only" sold ~1,400,000. Assuming the game is good, it may try to rival MM2's place...and given Mega Man's lack of an important game in over a decade, having a new best-selling game that's solid and returns to his roots could do him a lot of good. Still doesn't compare to Brawl or beat CTDS, but tranny said it: it'll ensure that one less Noble Niner is in danger for awhile. --- Our NRT-champions: Pokemon R/B/Y -- SF64 -- DKC2 Pledge here: http://boards.gamefaqs.com/gfaqs/genmessage.php?board=8&topic=43361212 |

It might get him some of his old fans back, though. There's surely a
good part who have lost interest in Mega Man after going so long
without any notable games, and MM9 might win back support from some
fans. Yeah, he probably won't get many new fans, but winning back old
fans after starting to slip might be what he needs to keep him going
strong. --- i got nuthin |

Plus, for $10 dollars and easy access from home to get it...with some
hype and his classic first two NES games coming to the VC, they may be
able to make reach some new fans. I think Mega Man fans want a reason for him to be relevant again, and a hopefully-good cheap game that seemingly returns to its roots hitting every platform could do that. --- Lobby Hero http://img251.imageshack.us/img251/3079/lobbyheroauditionflyerssv6.jpg |

I'm unfamiliar with Capcom's marketing tactics, but how do they normally work? To be perfectly honest it's you could make a superb game living above expectations but not make any money and you can generate immense hype without making any money either. Is there a obvious way to appeal to the masses? In the UK the DS was very well advertised,It sponsored late night TV shows and had people a model DS with people dressed in costume interacting with the screens. Brain Age also had just about every famous Daytime/Morning personality such as phillip Schofield and fern Britton and I think Nicole Kidman was drafted in to play the role of a woman in her prime with an absurdly high brain age, while national institution Julie Walters got a decent score. In other words it was a brilliant ploy. Capcom clearly don't have the funds for that kind of advertising so what are their main strengths in attracting people,Internet hype can only get you so far, look at Snakes on a Plane. --- Day Brawl was supposed to arrive by mail:02/07/2008 Damn the Royal Mail. |

They marketed RE4 fine, but then again they had an excellent game to market. I do think RE and MM were similar in how they were both in need of a revival. RE did it by recreating the genre, and it looks like MM is doing it by going back to the very definition of the genre. MM9 will be no RE4 either in general or to its series, but it's certainly a step in the right direction for the Blue Bomber. --- Our NRT-champions: Pokemon R/B/Y -- SF64 -- DKC2 Pledge here: http://boards.gamefaqs.com/gfaqs/genmessage.php?board=8&topic=43361212 |
