Simple Explanation of Extrapolated Standings:
A = Strongest Character
B = Character Weaker than A

To figure out a character's Xsts Percentage ---> [(CvB)(BvA)]/50 = CvA
To compare how C would do against B ---> [(CvA)/(BvA)]*50 = CvB
To figure out how B would do against A ---> [(CvA)/(CvB)]*50 = BvA

Hey, shouldn't we be having a contest by now? (<-- strong observation)

*Creativename's websites* (<-- the c should never be capped. NEVER)

Everything you could ever imagine:
http://www.GameFAQsContests.com (<-- keep of course)
http://www.sc2k5.com (<-- not needed- in fact this URL just loops back to gfcontests.com)
http://www.sc2k4.com (<-- not needed- its still a unique old site design, but all the content can be found in updated form on gfcontests)

Sortable Table for Every Contest Match:
http://sc2k5.com/drupal/node/19 (<-- good info, but let's update the link to http://www.gamefaqscontests.com/drupal/node/19)

*Extrapolated Standings*

Explanation of Extrapolated Standings:
http://sc2k5.com/drupal/node/11 (<-- more good info, but again, we should update to point to http://www.gamefaqscontests.com/drupal/node/11)

Simple Explanation of Extrapolated Standings:
A = Strongest Character
B = Character Weaker than A
C = Character Weaker than B
To figure out a character's Xsts Percentage ---> [(CvB)(BvA)]/50 = CvA
To compare how C would do against B ---> [(CvA)/(BvA)]*50 = CvB
To figure out how B would do against A ---> [(CvA)/(CvB)]*50 = BvA
(^ takes up alot of space, but is worth it considering how confused a newcomer is sure to be by constant x-stats talk)

Extrapolated Standings for All Contests (links to all brackets are on the left):
http://www.gamefaqscontests.com/drupal/ (<-- this is just the main page of gfcontests, which we've already linked to. also creative hasn't done full stats for the last two seasons. I would suggest updating this link to http://www.thengamer.com/xstats/ranks.php - with the message "links to all yearly x-stats are on top")

http://solarshadow-stats.tripod.com/sp2004/index.html

(^ I appreciate solar's work as much as anyone, but these sites are no longer relevant enough to be opening post worthy. I would suggest adding a new link to the bottom of the post called "Historic Contest Links" and pointing it to http://www.gamefaqscontests.com/drupal/node/9 - creative's page that has links to all these solar pages, my GameFAQs Archive, and a bunch of other old-school pages)

(^ these links are cool to have for nostalgic purposes, but again, they're not relevant enough to be taking up all this space. I would suggest replacing them with a single link, to http://thengamer.com/stats/ - the archive TRE maintains that goes all the way back to Stats 1 and all the way forward to... whoa, he's already got 449 up!)

* Say What? *
(quick explanations of stats topic terminology)

SFF - Same Fanbase Factor is the theory that, if two contestants share a common fanbase, the weaker of the two options will underperform in a direct matchup. For instance, Link was expected to defeat Ganon with 65% of the vote in 2004, based on their 2003 values. Instead, Link collected near 88% of the vote, because the Zelda fanbase so clearly sided with him.

X-Stats - Short form of Extrapolated Statistics, aka the mathematical "strength" of a contestant that can be determined based on their performance in any given matchup. See above for a detailed explanation of the x-stat process.

BL - Base Link refers to the original 50% value applied to Link in 2002, and is the basis for all x-stats since. For instance if someone says that Vincent is at "36.25% on the 2007 x-stats," what they're really saying is that Vincent would manage over 36% of the vote against 2002 Link.

If no one objects (or has anything to add) to my new first post setup, perhaps Mega could repost this topic with the new first post in place. He'd have to act quickly though, as I can sense that intense Contest discussion is going to start breaking out all over the place. Any minute now...

just out of curiosity, how do you determine what characters from different years would get on Base Link? Do you assume that one character remained constant between the two years and make the stats from there?

how do you determine what characters from different years would get on Base Link?

First we calculate the Extrapolated Standings for every character relative to the top performer that year. Next we take a few characters to seem to remain the most constant and use least squares computations to find the factor to convert the Extrapolated Standings to BL.

A more detailed example can be found here:

I'd cut it a lot further. something like this.

http://www.GameFAQsContests.com - match results, updates, match pictures, x-stats
http://thengamer.com/xstats - x-stat simulator
http://thengamer.com/stats - old stats topics
http://freewebs.com/mmxcalibur/ - contest bios and writeups
http://members.shaw.ca/teamrocketelite/Polls.html - every poll on one page

Simple Explanation of Extrapolated Standings (x-stats):
A = Strongest Character
B = Character Weaker than A
C = Character Weaker than B
To figure out a character's Xsts Percentage ---> [(CvB)(BvA)]/50 = CvA
To compare how C would do against B ---> [(CvA)/(BvA)]*50 = CvB
To figure out how B would do against A ---> [(CvA)/(CvB)]*50 = BvA

and then let the rest of it go. otherwise, it's really wall-of-texty and no one reads it.

True enough. Stats from last year are impossible and would be absolutely worthless if someone could get them anyway. The stats from 2006 are not much better.

I'm kinda wondering if Bacon is going to try another twist this year, or if he'll just go back to a traditional 64 character battle. Could it be time for the Tag Team!?

BL is almost a worthless base now since we haven't had a good read on Link compared to the rest of the field since...what, 2005?

Base Link is just the name of the unit. It doesn't actually need Link to be in the contest. We just need a couple characters that appeared the previous year and probably haven't changed too much. Also, we haven't had a good Extrapolated Standings value for Link in a while so he wouldn't be very useful for determining the stats even if he was in the contest.

Ngamer64 | Posted 6/18/2008 8:34:34 PM | message detail
Good update TRE! Also, he hit it right on the head- "Base Link" is only a term, since Link's actual year to year value isn't determining anything. For the most part the BL conversions through the years have had the most to do with keeping Crono more or less constant... which was working just fine up until the last couple years. So yeah, we could call the BL concept anything really; no doubt Leon won't be happy until we change the name to Base Snake!

Yeah yo, I've been pushing for SB to set up a Contest Administrator position for a long while now, and I can't understand why he continues to drag his feet. Whenever CJay got in over his head he realized where he stood and brought in help, as when the boards exploded and he elected the initial Mods or when the ticket queue exploded and he hired on an Administrator or when the servers exploded and he brought in CNET. The Contests have exploded the past couple years, and yet SB sits around trying to do all the site work himself in only 40 hours a week and barely scrapping by. He needs to just focus on clearing the queue, improving those new features he's so fond of, and allow someone else to take the Contests off his plate.

I agree 100%. I don't fault Bacon at all for not giving us a contest so far this year. While we may at times forget in the comfort of our Board 8 nook, GameFAQs is still an extremely popular site, and SB has only recently (less than a year) found himself in the do-all position of one of the most popular websites on the Internet. That'll take a toll on anyone, and anyone can understand why a new contest wouldn't be atop of his list of things to do.

Like you, though, I really wish he'd share some of the contest load. He has a veritable goldmine of people in this very topic who will put countless hours into setting up a contest, and we'd do it willingly and passionately.

Eh, if you want to restart the topic, go ahead. Hell, since P549a was close to 500 anyway, maybe this one should end prematurely and we go ahead with P551 or whatever.

Anyway, would a contest admin of some sort be worth a petition?

Asked Ceej about this ages ago, there are legal issues against it. We'll never see an unpaid member of the site running a contest that offers monetary prizes.

I don't know about anyone else, but I'd be willing to say take a hike to the prizes if it meant having two well run contests every year.

I'd do it for about tree-fitty.

So, HM/Leonhart/anybody else who has played it, we know MGS4 is being largely well-received...is Solid Snake still as cool as ever (perhaps even...cooler?) in it?

HM will say he's better than I ever -- I say he's kinda plain and boring, but nothing bad.

the character that will boost from MGS4 the most is Raiden. he kinda steals the show multiple times.

Snake's great in MGS4 -- far and away the best character. He doesn't have the same kind of 'cool factor' going for him that someone like Raiden does, in that he isn't a 'ninja' with crazy action scenes, but Snake's never had those. He doesn't get much better than he is in MGS4 -- and it should do a lot of good things for him come contest time.

Where there are cardboard boxes, there will always be Solid Snake.

Solid Snake is as good as he's ever been in MGS4. He certainly won't go down because of the game, if that's what you're afraid of.

It's close. Snake in MGS2 was top of the line, but it doesn't get much better than Old Snake.

all about the cigs

Oh, I was NOT afraid of Solid dropping...I just didn't know if it was the same Solid that made him popular or not.

Nothing to worry about in that regard. Snake is the main focus of the game, and he's still as great as ever.

Interested to see how Raiden, Liquid/Ocelot (although I imagine the boost will affect Ocelot the most), and...a certain other character will do if they get into the next contest.
