I think the only reason Starcraft was underestimated was because it
faced Halo and it was a 1 vs. 16 match... normally I don't think the
casuals would underestimate it. Of course, WC beating GTA in the series
contest was also a big upset, but you know how GTA is overestimated... --- "Ah, a party! We haven't had one of those. It could be fun! So...what is a party?" "Well, you drink punch and eat CAKE! ...I think." |

Huh. Less people plan to buy Mario Kart Wii on GameFAQs right now than GTA4. True, but I would keep in mind that only 20.33% of Wii owners on GameFAQS had Mario Kart Wii on the day of release when compared to: 36.89% of PS3 owners getting GTA IV and 31.57% of X360 Owners getting GTA IV --- You need to meet someone at a garden, or a movie or something. Oh please, the "winning" option was basically "I'll take any contest." Games won out over the actual character option. I'm guessing the next Wii game GameFAQs is going to be really excited
about will be Zelda in 2009...there aren't many huge games coming out
for it after this this year. Maybe Animal Crossing and Kirby, but those

MOST ANTICIPATED RESULTS (January 2008 vs May 2008) We lose: - DMC4 - GTA4 - Brawl We gain: + Ninja Gaiden 2 + Soul Caliber 2 + Sims 3 Jan to May Hype Increase Rankings 1. MGS4 - 10.76% 2. FF13 - 9.39% 3. RE5 - 7.23% 4. SCII - 5.87% 5. Gears 2 - 4.93% 6. SF4 - 1.85% Appears as though MGS is going to come up a little bit short in today's poll. Just for fun, I compared the two polls in question a couple posts
earlier and figured out the percentages among the entrants that stayed
the same. I subtracted Brawl, DMC IV, and GTA IV, from the first poll
and divided the percentages among the amount left, and did the same for
this last one, once again excluding the new ones. I don't remember my exact numbers but: MGS 4, Gears of War 2, and I BELIEVE RE 5 increased, while FFXIII, SCII, and SFIV all dropped relative to their fellow games. I can't remember the numbers for RE 5 exactly, so it might have decreased too. ended. In a match that nearly reached 450 votes, Luigi took the crown
over Kirby. Great work getting those stats made, TRE. 450 votes? That's awesome; cool to see that the Brawl board is still so active. On a related note, I have that website HaR was asking for ready to go now. In keeping with my naming convention, I call it "lol tiers", as in 'here's a chance for general gamers to determine the "tiers" for Brawl based on personal preference, rather than all this pro metagame tournament nonsense'. The main page is devoted to casting your 1v1 votes: http://www.thengamer.com/ssb/ Every time you vote for a character he gets a +1, while the other person gets a -1. All matchups are generated randomly, so there should be no bias in determining which character will rise to the top. This system is also handy since you'll always know that 0 = average, while anyone who is able to climb significantly into the positives will be doing something very impressive. There's three other pages as well; this first one is just to display the results of the 1v1 voting. http://www.thengamer.com/ssb/results.php Then the kind-of-cool secondary ranking option I threw in deals with people's "Top Five Characters." You can cast your vote on that by visiting http://www.thengamer.com/ssb/results.php?topfive=vote This is a wholly different scoring system, where getting voted #1 earns you 5 points, and you get 4 pts for 2nd place, and so on. The results of this voting can be seen on the last page http://www.thengamer.com/ssb/results.php?topfive=ranks I think it's going to be interesting to see how these two lists compare... for the Top Five, you're protected from anti-votes, so being hated doesn't hurt, while being loved and getting lots of 5s and 4s is huge. So it's closest to the Top 100 Games list a while back. Then the 1v1 is closer to a traditional Contest format, so maybe other characters will thrive there instead. We'll see how it ends up playing out. If the site ends up being a hit, it'd only take a minute to whip up similar offerings for Melee and SSB, now that I have the system in place. With 205 players casting over 13000 votes, the 1v1 section of the Brawl rankings currently sits at Brawl Likability 1 Meta Knight 260 2 Toon Link 237 3 Pokemon Trainer 181 4 Kirby 163 5 Pikachu 156 6 Dedede 145 7 Wolf 133 8 Ike 117 9 Lucas 97 10 Snake 96 Whereas the other rankings has seen 140 players pick their Top Five favorite characters, and that Top Ten now says Brawl Loveability 1 Ike 128 117 2 Toon Link 115 237 3 Snake 97 96 4 Lucas 88 97 5 Marth 85 71 6 Pikachu 84 156 7 Wolf 83 133 8 Zelda 83 40 9 Pokemon Trainer 80 181 10 Sonic 78 55 Early conclusions: - our decision to back Charizard next time is looking smart, as PT's doing super in both categories - even though Meta Knight's only 14th in Top Five points, his 1v1 showing is probably a better indication of how dangerous he could be next Contest - it seems safe to say that Link's one weak point, a "Celda" match pic, will no longer be his kryptonite, as voters will associate that look with the well-loved Toon Link from here out - Ike certainly has a dedicated fanbase... yeah, looks like the casual players love him as much as early reports assumed; he could be a major threat in the future - Wolf earns high scores across the board. frankly I'm surprised we allowed Andross into a Contest over him. | Yeah, I'm sorry, but those lists imply Mario doesn't absolutely rape Samus. I wouldn't buy Samus getting anything close to 40% on Mario in a rematch. |

| No one's saying the polls are a 1:1 correspondence
to Contest strength. We're just making the observation that if a
character is considered the favorite of a huge section of the
playerbase, those players are going to be likely to continue to support
their in-game favorite come Contest time. And, given Brawl's enormous
playerbase, that could potentially have a pretty big impact next time

| I had such a beautiful dream last night. On the
front page of Gamefaqs there was a poll between Mario, Samus, Yoshi,

TREND WATCH SB kept an old CJay tradition alive a few day back by running a poll Ceej used to do pretty much on a yearly schedule, so I thought I'd go back and review how that one's been trending. Which web browser do you use? July 2004: Internet Explorer - 70.42% Firefox - 20.00% June 2005: Internet Explorer - 50.08% (down 22.80%) Firefox - 42.79% (up 20.34%) April 2006: Internet Explorer - 39.87% (down 10.21%) Firefox - 53.15% (up 10.36%) May 2008: Internet Explorer - 36.38% (down 3.49%) Firefox - 56.12% (up 2.96%) --- Mostly you've got to chalk the slowdown in turnover just to IE just having so little percentage left to bleed... but I think another factor is how GameFAQs continues to grow and become more and more mainstream. I would chalk it up to Firefox becoming mainstream more than GameFAQs
for that poll, personally. Also, I think one of those polls had a flaw
where people using IE had a very difficult time voting in the poll,
thus making its percentage much lower. Maybe it was the 2006-one, but I

Here we go guys -- after ~8,000 votes from encouraging other online
communities to participate in big-N's SSBB-site, there are some big
differences. You can go to the site to see what the collective numbers
are, but these numbers are showing the differences between the rest of
the online-forum-going-SSBB fans and GameFAQs (specifically B8 and the
SSBB-board). Since I'm still up, I'll give a quick thought or two on all that: --> I'm not surprised at Solid > Sonic for SSBB on GameFAQs or anywhere else...but it surprises me that GameFAQs seems to have the least extreme view on that equation. I figure those other places didn't get as excited for Sonic as they did for Solid and/or care as much for the Sonic series as they do for the MG series compared to us...but maybe they're madder than we are about Sonic's lack of knock-out moves! --> It looks like there's a loose correlation that GameFAQs prefers quicker characters in SSBB (maybe in general?) while others enjoy stronger characters. Ike and Solid seem to be enjoyed by all for the most part...but bigger characters like Ganon, Bowser, and King Dedede saw more success outside of GameFAQs while lighter ones like Meta-Knight, Sonic, and Pikachu took strong hits outside of our domain. Again though, ultimately I still think it's a loose correlation that may not even matter. --> My biggest surprise? Captain Olimar. I didn't suspect people from IGN or GameSpot would care for him at all nor did I figure SmashBoards would be crazy for the guy, plus he's a tricky guy to use.
