Hmm... well first of all, it's awesome to finally get some confirmation
that SB is thinking of us and considering what to go with this Summer.
The most important thing with this poll, I feel, I how poorly the "I
don't like Contests" option is doing- after all the craziness and
outrage and "Contest anti-voting" that was going on at the end of last
season, it's good to see how after a little break everyone has come to
their senses and realized how fun Contest season can be. Regarding the Best Game Ever option... well heck, it's doing about as well as you could hope, given the circumstances. I'm sure plenty more are in favor of it, but people are probably instead jumping at one of the first two choices either because they don't scroll far enough to see that Games is an option or because they just love Contests in general and don't want to cast any kind of "no" vote. I think I'll send SB a ticket though just to be sure, pointing to the petition to show that here on B8, we're fully behind games. --- Hot Content: thengamer.com/xstats | board8.wikia.com He isn't a killer. Having the game contest instead of a character battle would a bad move,
the last one in 2004 was really dull, dominated by games from a small
number of series. The series contest even worse, it's just not the same
having a static box representing an entrant compared to a fictional
character. If it's either or, it's a no brainer. Character Battle every time, I'm glad the site think the same. --- I want to gorge myself on this sense of fulfillment until I vomit. Smurf |

Uhhh, wow. Not sure where to start with that post, but let me try. Very dull? Very? We must be talking about different Contests, because the Game Contest I saw featured four of the top ten matches of all time, arguably the single greatest match ever (CT/LttP), the most impressive underdog run in history (after adjusting for the four-way format with L-block), and some great twists and turns. (In five days we went from expecting an all-Zelda Final Four to seeing Zelda knocked out of the running in four consecutive matches.) I'll give you that, despite the major highlights, a majority of the matches were dull. But do you know why? It was because the bracket was filled with bad fodder, first off, and secondly because the division into eras made the winner obvious with many older games. The good news is, the new Game Contest with an open nomination system won't have either of those problems! The strongest games coming from a small number of elite series? Well, you're right there. But that's opposed to the strength of characters... how exactly? Now, the one good point you did bring up is that games are going to be more static than characters, a little less likely to change over time. But what you again seem to be overlooking is that it's been four years. There's been a major shift in the voter pool, two times as many votes are going to be cast in this Contest, a huge number of quality games have come out in the last four years, PLUS there were enormous snubs from the last Contest that we know nothing about. The Game Contest x-stats weren't even very useful at the time, and they'll be completely meaningless now. Yes, Games are more static, but we have no idea what that static strength is. Today's poll probably underrates the game contest option, because I had
checked the "Yes, it's the highlight of my year on GameFAQs" myself and
was about to submit it before I even looked at the other options, even
though I'd rather have a games battle rather than a character battle.
We need an explicit Character vs. Games poll to see what people would
prefer. And if it's another character battle (good chance of that),
then so be it. Having the game contest instead of a character battle would a bad move, the last one in 2004 was really dull Uh...hu-whaa?? |

I enjoyed the villain contest more than the game contest, the only
people who seemed to enjoy that was the contest stats regulars for
whatever reason. >_> I'd like to see a game contest on the sole condition that the only games were entrants from the last generation. I thought the last bracket in the game contest redeemed itself. And plus having a winner for the last generation would be coming at a good time, and should be fairly competitive from last time, adding the likes of Resident Evil 4 into the mix. The idea of games in a contest really just doesn't appeal to me at all. There's no dynamic element to it. For a character there's so many factors that can influence it's popularity, generally only one for a game. Itself. --- I want to gorge myself on this sense of fulfillment until I vomit. Smurf |

Villain > BGE? ...nu-uh. We had seen many of its characters in
matches before, Sephiroth had complete domination, his top competition
in Liquid and Ganon were wasted in their matches (and arguably Bowser,
depending on your opinion of Revolver in 2k5), there were no
wire-to-wire matches, it was half the size of BGE, and prediction-wise
it was one of the most predictable contests to date. Only Diablo's run,
MH/Kuja, the opening hours of CATS/Ansem, and the first hour of any
Sephiroth-match was worth watching...and the rest blew chunks. Granted, some of those are classic, but let's compare to BGE. It was all new competition, FF7 had better competition to face, LoZ:OoT/LoZ:LttP/CT/SMB3/SSBM/FF6 weren't wasted, we had nail-biters with huge-name games (CT/LoZ:LttP, MGS/FFT) alongside nearly seeing the biggest successful comeback ever with DK/DH, we had a full bracket, and prediction-wise not many people were close to perfect. Starcraft >>> Diablo as far as runs go and SF2/SMRPG caused more controversy than MH/Kuja, too. Though there was no CATS and anti-voting FF7 wasn't quite as fun to watch, BGE destroys Villain. --- Do you like suggesting ideas for contests? Again Smurf, I agree that games are less dynamic, but you're forcing me to once again point out that they don't need
to be dynamic for 2008, because we know so little about them right now.
Yeah yeah, OoT and FF7 are going to be on top, but no one can say with
any kind of certainty where Brawl or Melee or TP or Galaxy or FF8 or
Halo or StarCraft or etc etc etc are going to fall within that huge
range of games beneath them. And would you really take Chrono Trigger
to finish on top of that whole list again in '08? Even there, we've got
a well loved and extremely established game, but there's no telling how
far it could have fallen in the past 4+ years. You'd think it would
have slipped quite a bit, but heck, there are some people who would
still take it over Link to the Past. As for the idea that only hardcore stats people loved the Games Contest, though, now you're just being silly. The Contests have only made a huge impact outside of GameFAQs three times: L-Block, the final part of 2002 (specifically Mario/Cloud, but basically the whole end section was just wild), and StarCraft's run in '04. Love of the BGE extended way, way beyond this topic. Do a poll sometime outside of this topic asking for everyone's favorite Contest, and I'll bet you that Games takes the cake (at the very least it will amongst people who have been following for that long). --- Hot Content: thengamer.com/xstats | board8.wikia.com He isn't a killer. Oh, I should have jumped on this: For a character there's so many factors that can influence it's popularity, generally only one for a game. Itself. Shouldn't that be part of its appeal? People have often dissed the idea of tag-team brackets or even four-way brackets like last year because of there being so many factors involved. Characters are less complicated than those, yes, but the games themselves are even less so. It is purely about which single game is more popular here. Despite its simplicity though, don't exaggerate how simple it is. There are lots of factors that decide the popularity of games, too, and you know it. I'm not gonna bother listing them off because you're smarter than that, but to say its popularity is generally decided by itself is grossly vague and inaccurate. --- Do you like suggesting ideas for contests? Here's just a random thought from Zylo. Super Metroid VS HALO Xstats says: HALO with 53.53% The Top 100 list says: Halo got the 9th spot, Super Metroid isn't even on the top 20! Zylo says: I really really want Super Metroid to win, but I'm really worried that "teh kiddies" will wake up and vote for HALO. Board 8's opinion: ? Also how far are we expecting WoW to get? Would you guys pick any of these games over it? Oh and I would take KH2 over CoD4. I know CoD4 did great in the goty
poll, but it's still an FPS....KH2 on the other hand is a

I could see Tabuu doing well if he got his awesome "angel" picture,
like he has before Sonic clips him. And by well I mean, slightly ahead
of Master Hand '05, so still wouldn't be amazing or anything... But oh man, can you imagine that match- Angel Tabuu vs Angel Kefka. Angel Tabuu beating Angel Kefka as the first of sign of the Brawl
impact (meaning characters like Ike, Pit, etc. haven't had their
matches yet) would make BRAWLFEAR absolutely hilarious. I think Tabuu

I doubt Tabuu would be as strong as Master Hand. An average player
would need to play the Subspace Emissary for ~8 hours just to see

I think a better comparison would be KH Sephiroth - almost no presence
in the game, but he's completely badass while he's there and his boss

For the record, MH > Tabuu both directly and indirectly for me.
Tabuu's bad-ass, but I'm not sure if people can turn their back on the
original boss on top of the other reasons given so far. It's also worth noting that Mario Kart Wii was the game to dethrone

Granted, I don't think GTA4 has any FAQs yet. Looks like Mario Kart won't do too badly with sales, though. GTA4's getting even more hype than I thought it would, but it still doesn't seem like it's huge at GameFAQs. Since it's been so long since we had a games contest wouldn't the
casuals underestimate Starcraft's power or will the board actually end
