Explanation of Extrapolated Standings:
http://sc2k5.com/drupal/node/11

Simple Explanation of Extrapolated Standings:
A = Strongest Character
B = Character Weaker than A
C = Character Weaker than B
To figure out a character's Xsts Percentage ---> [(CvB)(BvA)]/50 = CvA
To compare how C would do against B ---> [(CvA)/(BvA)]*50 = CvB
To figure out how B would do against A ---> [(CvA)/(CvB)]*50 = BvA

Ah, the first true topic of the offseason. Laugh and grow fat, my friends.
Lopen | Posted 11/21/2007 3:02:17 PM | message detail
I have a question or concern about a GameFAQs contest.
Message From X_and_Zero at 2007-11-21 22:24:33
My entry was filled out for prizes, and I finished sixth (fourth by prizes). Yet I won nothing, so says the official results. I didn't enter multiple times (well, I had two brackets but the other was not for prizes), and my entry was filled out correctly.
I'd like to have this error corrected. Thank you.

Message From GameFAQs at 2007-11-21 18:58:32
According to our logs, computers you used with your account were used in attempted vote-stuffing on 31 different occasions. This is more than enough evidence to invalidate your entry.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Excuse me? I did nothing of the sort. I often use dial-up connections when logging into GameFAQs, perhaps that is the problem? Or maybe a public computer I logged into once or twice is the culprit? Check the logs and run them against my bracket and against each other, I'm sure you will find they are not "stuffing" in my favor most of the time.

Message From GameFAQs at 2007-11-21 20:48:27
As you used a computer (not merely an IP address) that was later used to stuff votes (on the same day as you were seen logged in), this implicates your account.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Okay, perhaps it was the same computer (I don't really see how this could've happened 31 times but maybe GameFAQs is more popular on my campus than I thought...). Logging onto a public computer should not remove your chances of winning a contest.

Were the votes consistent with one another? Did they help my bracket? Were they even of any significant number? If the answer to any of these isn't "yes" why would I even bother??

Message From GameFAQs at 2007-11-21 22:02:47
The answers to your questions are yes, yes, and yes, and the computer used to stuff votes does not appear to be public, but a private system using dial-up. The decision to void your entry is final.

------------------------------------------------------------------

If I stuffed in 31 matches, could I have a list of which matches I stuffed in, and for which entrants I stuffed for? And a ballpark estimate of how many votes I stuffed?

And didn't I say I use dial up connections most of the time to log on? If someone else on my dial-up ISP constructed such a scheme I could be being tied to them despite not having any relation. If there's any flaw to your system of determining unique computers this could be a wrongful accusation if I've ever seen one.

Message From GameFAQs at 2007-11-21 22:39:44
The decision to void your entry is final.

Feedback Status: Bad Form - You used a message form for a purpose unrelated to that form's purpose. Because of this, you will not be able to create any additional feedback tickets for one week.

So, a mere implication is enough to condemn you guilty in the GameFAQs court of law, huh? They have no proof, and frankly I don't even think they checked the matches that I asked about, because it just seems too convenient that the answer to all the questions would be "yes" considering I didn't do it.

But oh, look at them, instead of proving me guilty they hide behind "the decision to void your entry is final" and ban me from submitting feedback tickets. Wow this feature sure is useful!

That really sucks...though after seeing that post's conversations, I'd be pretty skeptical in giving you prizes too from an administrative point of view. You may want to call your internet provider and see if there's any way you can ensure your own private IP or something...in case this ever happens again.

Lopen | Posted 11/21/2007 11:41:39 PM | message detail
So Haste you ever get your explanation?

And while I'm on the topic of *****ing about prizes, Leonhart got screwed too. He accidentally voted on two of his accounts for one match having forgotten he voted and so was denied a prize. I mean, I can see where they are coming from with the "no grey area" stuff, but I don't think it's right, really. There should be some amount of flexibility when it comes to these things. Following things to the letter like some sort of robot isn't the right way to do it. People always say "give an inch, give a mile" but it's possible to just give an inch and... give an inch. You don't have to keep expanding what is acceptable reason to second guess a decision after you expand it a bit the first time.

It's pretty absurd when you can make one silly mistake in a 15000 vote blowout match (Zelda/Vincent) and get screwed by it that bad.

The Simpsons is doing really fantastically in this poll. There could only be but a tiny handful of games that have the popularity to match this result. This gives Homer a potential 85% of the site's users from which he could draw votes. This leads me to believe he could probably take out any mid-carder in a poll no question and do some damage to elites in a cross-medium poll. No way could he be weak.

Yeah, I'm impressed by this poll as well. I expected that there would be really high viewership rates for all time, but I'm impressed that over 50% of the site still watches the show on a semi-regular basis. Plus, this appears to be one of the few non-contest polls to show substantial day vote trends. The second option appears to have grown by at least 4% since last night, albeit part of that is probably from the first option as well.

I don't know if Homer would do that great in a contest setting. Keep in mind The Simpsons Arcade Game got demolished by Mario World a few years ago. But then again, the Simpsons would likely have the best performance against something with a little bit less recognizability.

That, and we all know the Simpsons is the best arcade game of all time. Suck it, Street Fighter.

Best quote I've seen in awhile.

I feel bad for Haste and Lopen, and Leonhart too if that was his prize-bracket (though he made so many brackets for the contest it's really hard for me to care enough to keep up with which one's for money)...almost guilty for getting a prize, especially at Haste's expense since no foul play was even suspected with him. Ah well, I'm probably going to give the $50 I won to my brother for Christmas anyway...

About Sonic/Squall this year: nah, I don't think Squall beats Sonic this year/format, even without SSBB. Squall already did very well against Sonic when Sora was in the poll and Solid didn't have a chance to sap any of Sonic's newfound hype, yes...but in that next round, despite Sora being gone and Solid being there to likely keep Sonic's new hype in check, Sonic still beat Squall.

Sure, one could argue Solid/Squall SFF...but I'd leave those people to fight with creativename (I think that's right!). One could also argue L-Block ****ed things up too much to pull anything from that match, which is possible, though I don't think L-Block affected 3rd and 4th place too much for this instance.

Kirby VS L-Block...I would think Kirby wins this if it's a Round 1 match, though it may be close, with voters still remembering what L-Block did the previous year.
Kratos VS Kirby... Kratos wins this easily. Kratos crushed Kirby (an equal of 57/43), and with DK doing so badly in that same poll, DK couldn't have hurt Kirby very much.
Kratos VS Riku... Kratos wins this easily again. I think he was underrated in that poll with Snake. (I firmly believe that Riku could not beat Kirby)
Squall VS L-Block... As long as this isn't, say, past Round 3, Squall has to have this.
Master Chief VS Dante...good match, but I gotta say that Dante has this. If anything, Dante seems a little stronger than he was back in 2K5 (the last time we got a good x-stat value on him). MC probably boosted, too, but I think it's no more than 3-4 points (and that's being rather optimistic).
Link VS Cloud... ha.

Today's LL poll that's about to end covered an oft-discussed Stats topic, so thought I'd share.

Favorite 3D GTA game?
Grand Theft Auto 3 22.89% 377
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City 33.88% 558
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas 40.68% 670
TOTAL VOTES 1647

(the other 2% or so went to Liberty City or VC Stories)

Frankly the results are right in line with what I'd expect to see from GameFAQs as a whole, and they strengthen my conviction that where this series is involved, recency is king. Here's hoping we see SA and SA only next game contest!

Hey look at that, right in line with my thoughts again. Guess that's a pretty old poll now, but until GTA4 at least I wouldn't think those numbers would change much (and judging by LL, they haven't). In light of that, why am I still seeing people make cases for GTA3 or VC when they put up mock brackets?

Some suggest that 3 will retain strength since it was the first one. Not sure how true that is, though it could have some merit (I'd probably take 3 over SA a year after 4 came out).

No idea why people are supporting VC, though.
