Mario 3
FF1
LoZ
Duck Hunt
Mario 1
Tetris

I'm just stretching here though. I'd really only be interested in seeing SMB3. Maybe Tetris and Mario 1, but...

eh, Tetris is more of a GB/everything game, not just a NES game. for me, there's Zelda 1, Mario 3 and FF1. there's Mario 1 too, but for some reason I don't want to see it. it'd get votes based on how important people seem to think it is, but who actually plays Mario 1 regularly?

...I guess I could say the same about FF1 and Zelda 1. whatever!

Seriously, how many other NES games have sold 1 million copies in the past year? :p

Mario 1 vs. FF1? man, that's franchise voting to the extreme.

...and we've seen that match! Mario 1 probably edges FF1 out. but there's no reason to see FF1 again other than morbid curiosity and to see if people will still blindly vote the FF name. (judging by 2006 PS2 GOTY, I say yes.)

Mario 3 is the very reason for the franchise voting. it defined the franchise for most people. it isn't overinflated. same with FF7 -- people won't vote for it if they happen to dislike it but like other FF titles more. not the same with a FF title they haven't played like FF1.

but yeah, franchise voting is scary in a games contest, and is the reason the number of FF/Mario/Zelda games need to be limited. (we need a term for those three combined.)

I like FFT against MGS3, myself. I think there's reason to believe that FFT may have overperformed against MGS1 back in the day, but I don't think it's too overrated, especially with that re-release helping it out -- or maybe I'm all biased now.

Starcraft v Halo rematch.

Does Halo 2 and 3 boost Halo above Starcraft?
Or does Starcraft II and SC's ridiculous rally power prevail again?

spring 2004 was a different time. it was a time when FF was riding a bit of a high and MGS was riding a low. it was a time when vote totals were half what they were now. the Game Contest results are just about useless today.

give me MGS3. won't be surprised if FFT pulls it out, though.

Yeah. That was my worry about an games contest without a cap. A lot of good, strong competition is going to lose out to franchise voting, I think. But then you lose some of interesting match-ups that could be done because franchise voting can potentially do so much damage.

Seems like it's easy to really mess up a games contest bracket.

If an MGS4 demo released, would that change your answer?

I don't think that has much to do with MGS3. You could argue that it gets more people into a MGS mood -- but how many people own PS3s here? I think the two are close enough together where it could go either way, with the smallest thing turning the tide, but I still side with Tactics. If it comes down to mood or franchise voting, I think FF is in a better position.

try making one sometime. you'll see that it's next to impossible unless you put a LOT of effort into it -- and let's face it, Sailor Bacon is not going to do that.

expect scores of wasted matches like OOT/SM64 again.

ZFS | Posted 11/5/2007 6:06:09 PM | message detail
The vote total argument is understandable -- particularly in this case -- but I'm skeptical of how much that affects things overall. I can think of some close results that could have changed (MGS/FFT, for instance), but I don't think FF suffers with higher vote totals, or that one series gets a clear advantage because of them. Valid argument, though.

"With each passing day, the world finds new and exciting ways to kill a man."
trannyscience | Posted 11/5/2007 6:10:08 PM | message detail
oh, I'm not saying that lower vote totals necessarily hurt FFT. I'm saying it's a totally different time, and that I don't think it has much of a chance against MGS today. it's not aging all that well, it's quite niche, three years have passed.. that PSP port will only stop it from sinking, and even that won't be all that effective.

ZFS | Posted 11/5/2007 6:14:24 PM | message detail
Oh, I agree. I don't think MGS/FFT goes 50/50 again today. MGS should win that one handily -- although MGS3 would be another matter, I think.

I've just heard the vote total argument brought up many times for things like FF7/OoT and a bunch of other matches an I'm not so sure it matters, but maybe the recent Nintendo shift could have changed things. Who knows -- but I do think that games would be less prone to wildly change, even with shifts, over the years than characters.

You like that Nook pick, but personally I'm more shocked I lost to a guy who picked Ridley to advance ahead of Dante, Pikachu, Tidus, Vivi, Balthier etc all. Ridley

Actually basically all of Round Three couldn't have gone worse for him.

Everyone knows Kirby > Link indirectly. Link gets that Mario SFF against Nintendo opponents making him look stronger is all.

I threw together a bracket based on tranny's earlier list. It's not fantastic, and the seeding is a little quirky. I tried to avoid severe early-round SFF as much as possible, and I think I wound up with a few decent matches scattered about. Comments?
