Contest season over- time for the return of Got Console!

http://board8.wikia.com/wiki/Got_Console

Looking at the standings we see that it's been a full 4 months since the last time we got to see the PS3's market share. So with all that time to grow its userbase, and the recent price cut to make it all the more enticing, I'm expecting big things from the console! Let's see here...

In 4 months, the PS3 has increased its GameFAQs userbase by... 0.94% to just over 16%. My goodness, is that awful! As RPG just explained, the PS2 was already to 55% by this time in its life, the GC was to 52%, and even the much-despised Xbox limped through its most-hated 12 months and managed a 25% share.

Very interested to see how far Halo 3 has shot up the 360 share tomorrow...

Stupid WoW-polls interrupting "Got ___?" polls!

I cringe everytime I see a Warcraft-related poll and then compare it to GTA/WC.

Actually HaR, it looks like SB's going to hold off on that Wii poll until the exact birthday of it's launch, so we've probably got, uh... no wait, that WOULD be tomorrow. Nevermind then!

Anyways, currently sitting at a 31.64% playrate for WoW. Pretty good when you consider that FF11 maxed out at 20.65 back in '04, and that Everquest never even made it to 17%, but like HaR said, certainly a sad showing in light of the ease with which it beat the GTA series.

(Speaking of painful BTW- VC alone has been played by 63.13% of the site.)

Nor do I. There's no way that match result is legit. I don't mind so much that it should have been a pretty close match (though I've grown a bit skeptical of that too), but WC > GTA cannot be fault-free.

I'm just gonna blame it on Tuesdays at the time and leave it at that now.

Guitar Hero storms WoW. Not a blow-out, per say, but without rallying I don't see WoW having a chance...and GH doesn't seem like a game WoW-fans would rally against.

Warcraft beat GTA because of anti-votes and because people underestimated the popularity of the RTS series, I think. Warcraft 3 would probably fare reasonably well in a contest, but I think WoW would be total fodder. You can't argue with the playership numbers it puts up in these polls.

And for everyone considering SMB's "respect votes" consider how SMB did in the series contest.

SMB there would get the very same respect votes, and it had the backing of the much more popular SMB games too. Not to say SMB did poorly at all in the series contest, but SMB3 and SMW and SM64 and all the more popular games beefed it up quite a bit.

Basically what I'm saying is, I don't think SMB would be that strong. Considering the whole series couldn't even outdo what FF7 got on SSBM, and that the whole series should have some decent strength without the respect vote... yeah, SMB is weaker than SMW by a decent margin.

(SSB doesn't help SSBM that much! Though I do believe that SSB as a series is significantly stronger now than in 2004... you still can't argue with those numbers.)

(SSB doesn't help SSBM that much! Though I do believe that SSB as a series is significantly stronger now than in 2004... you still can't argue with those numbers.)

More issues than just that are brought up when you're using what you're using. Using the Series Contest to compare what's arguably Super Mario's #4 game to SSB's #1 and the potential that the SSB series is largely considered to be in the Super Mario franchise...those are two that immediately come to mind, and this is neverminding series =/= games.

We've also seen SMB1 barely beat SMW in the Top 100 List and we know it's respected to no end. You just tried to use respect against Super Mario because of its match with SSB...but then I'd point you to Mario's other matches where it scored the biggest blow-out of the contest, converted a rallying attempt, and tangled impressively with FF. SMB1 is arguably more respected than any other game to date, too, so if Super Mario did better than expected solely because of respect, then expect SMB1 to do the same.

Here's all I really want to say in support of SMB1 in a nutshell:
1) The Top 100 List shows SMB1 is well-liked, whether it can beat SMW one-on-one or not.
2) SMB1 has both a higher playrate than most games and more respect than probably any game...
3) ...and I think that they would be factors that work for SMB1 like we've not seen work for other contestants.
4) No series or character match can directly or even indirectly say how SMB1 would do.
5) We've never seen a format gauge SMB1's strength that didn't have SMB3 in it.

I'd take SM64 > SMW > SMB1, but there's no way SMB1 should be discounted and I'd take SMB1 to beat practically anybody SMW could beat.

so if Super Mario did better than expected solely because of respect, then expect SMB1 to do the same.

That's my point. I don't think it did do significantly better because of respect, and I think it has all the respect going for it that SMB1 has. Debatable whether it did better or not, certainly, but I don't think it did. Now, I don't think SMB1 is going to be weak, because as you pointed out, it is a popular game. I just don't think it's going to gain terribly much from intangibles.

WoW dropped a little from that early number I posted, but still ended with a pretty good 31.05%. Yeah, not a huge playrate, but I'd still give the game some pretty huge respect in a traditional Game Contest. Not to the point that it could reach up and tangle with a real heavyweight, but it scares me enough that if its R1 opponent was at all near WoW's level, I'd have to back Blizzard. Because I just don't see any way that it loses a close/semi-close match.

And speaking of numbers, whoo, on to Wii just like we thought! We could still be feeling the effects of the NPH somewhat, but... assuming the current number stands, the Wii would have improved its GameFAQs Market Share by a very impressive 4.26% over the course of the past four months. It may not need top-quality titles to continue selling out at stores across the country, but here on GameFAQs at least the release of Galaxy and Prime appears to have helped its growth pretty dramatically. The 360's sure to have done some good expanding of its own, but even with the help of Halo 3 it's going to be hard pressed to match that 4+ number.

I definitely want to see how the 360 is doing now, and even the DS. **** the PSP-poll we know will come though!

I just got done reading MetaCritic's reviews on both Halo 3 and SMG...and, from the look of things there, SMG has its number in both professional reviews and user reviews. The Wii also definitely has the 360's number here as well. It's just a matter of whether enough people have played SMG here or not to get GotY. Having a third option in the final GotY-poll probably won't do it many favors either, especially if it's Pokemon P/D or LoZ:PH (though I think it'll be GoW2). Halo 3 is probably the safe pick just because of that, if nothing else.

However, I'm thinking if the 360's growth doesn't match the Wii's growth despite the price drop and the system's first (and arguably best) Halo game, then Halo 3 may be in trouble for the GotY here. It'll still probably win because of its assumed devout fanbase, but SMG is going to give it hell.

Wii's 53%+ ownership percentage is certainly impressive, and while I initially thought the 24% for "No, I just don't want one" option was high, it's really not too bad when considering the polarizing nature of the console. I expect the 360 to have the smallest "I just don't want one" percentage and a large "Still costs too much/one more price drop" percentage.
YoAriel33 | Posted 11/19/2007 12:35:37 PM | message detail
Hmm... Game of the Year. Halo will ravage everything on its own system and emerge as the sole 360 option, and I'm assuming Galaxy will do the same for the Wii. I doubt the PS3 will even have a viable option for the final poll, so what I'm assuming we'll get is:

God of War II
Halo 3
Super Mario Galaxy

I like Mario's chances there. Of course, if Pokemon or Phantom Hourglass make the poll, kiss it goodbye, plumber.
H__RR____H | Posted 11/19/2007 12:40:01 PM | message detail
LoZ:MC couldn't outdo GoW or RE4 when its Nintendo competition was MKDS in 2k5. I'll be shocked if LoZ:MC or Pokemon D/P outdoes GoW2 or Halo 3 when its Nintendo competition is SMG.

As you used a computer (not merely an IP address) that was later used to stuff votes (on the same day as you were seen logged in), this implicates your account.

So apparently it's not IP hosing and I just got unlucky with public computers...? 31 times? I have my doubts about that and I think they're mistaken or... to put it bluntly, are just lying (somehow I doubt the votes contain enough information about a computer to narrow it that specifically).

Mistaken is possible, but why would he outright lie about it? If he didn't have some reason to believe you account was involved in vote stuffing, there's no reason not to give you the prize.

(somehow I doubt the votes contain enough information about a computer to narrow it that specifically).

I don't know the details, but unless you are taking precautions to hide your identity, it's not too difficult to determine if two people used the same computer to access the site.

Eh, I was thinking perhaps the people who already won prizes had already been notified and it'd cause too much of a stir to reassign the winners. I don't know. There shouldn't be a reason to lie about it, I suppose.

Mistaken seems quite possible as many of the computers at the campus have very similar hardware/software configurations. I'm not sure how they narrow down what an individual computer is, but I figure many of the potential checks would make two computers at such a place look identical.
