why are you comparing such awesome characters to spiderman

Unless they count characters played in live-action like Jack Bauer or House. Then I'd be interested

These guys would flop so hard it would be almost cruel to their fans to even allow them.

Would anyone really enjoy House getting 90/10'd by Mega Man? (maybe 85-15)

yawnfests like Star Wars and comic books. Puhleaze

Yawnfests to you, the only thing people give a crap about to most :)

As said, the big comic books guy would have the most strength (mainly due to licensed properties than the actual comics of course), and Star Wars strength would go very deep with a number of possible powerhouses and a potential superpower (Vader).

I'm not sure what fictional characters you'd be interested in seeing, would any of them avoid a quadrupling by Batman though?

I think the notion of capping the number of video game characters in such a contest is good - but they'd have to be half. Too much chance of non-video game character floppage, and matches where midcarders totally blow out uber-fodder aren't much fun for anyone. A 32/32 split is the most sensible.

I completely disagree with the notion of splitting the brackets though - that would go against the contest's primary draw, which is video game vs. fictional characters in great matchups you'd never see anywhere else. It would be highly counter-productive to the fun factor.

The bracket should be as scattered as possible - and also include seeding, so that the best matches take place later on. The last thing you want is more "Mewtwo gone in round 1/Dante to the Elite Eight" scenarios.

This isn't fan defensiveness - it's just a simple truth. L-Block is fun as hell; it's just not fun for the statistics. There's very little that can be conclusively drawn from this victory, and thus very little that's really worth discussing. It's shallow fun, instead of deep fun.

And can't we all be shallow for just a little while?

Wait, you're telling me the thought of Darth Vader, Batman, Spider-Man, and Solid Snake sharing the same bracket doesn't make you giggle like a schoolgirl?

No.

I'd rather see that Tag-Team contest Plenair hates so much, actually. (Probably be horribly mishandled, though.)
creativename | Posted 11/4/2007 6:21:02 PM | message detail
why are you comparing such awesome characters to spiderman

Snake could win, mostly because of non-video game character variance (we have no experience here), but I'd comfortably take Spider-Man over him. Spider-Man is just huge. (in video games too - the guy's combined games probably outsell Snake's by miles, actually) No kiddies where Solid Snake underpants or have Snakey bedsheets :) Spidey is just adored.

Irony, thy name is paraboxx being defensive while saying L-Block fans aren't defensive ^_^

As for "fun", I've said it umpteen times already - everyone loves fun, they have different definitions of it, and people don't like other people having fun when it hurts their own ability to do so. Clearly, the majority of this site does not find an L-Block victory to be fun, "shallow" or otherwise. (and how anything in this popularity contest beyond shallow anyway, it's all shallow really, I'm not sure what you're trying so say)

Also an advisory committee is probably a bad idea, committees suck and pretty much never work right. They'd just get in each other's way. I'd love to see this board's suggestions be implemented...but we all know this board's tastes are very different from the site as a whole, so I'm not sure they'd make the best recs contest-wise either :)

While I would love to see a fictional character contest, I really would like there to be no mix between them and the video game characters. I think the Video Game Elite would be a step above them though.

That being said, I've always had doubts about Vader. It's not that I don't think he could be popular, but unless he's listed as "Darth Vader (Anakin Skywalker)" I fear the fanbase might be too split. And what would happen if he got a Hayden Christensen pic or God Forbid a Jake Lloyd one (although the latter has about a 0% chance of happening.)

I don't think Harry Potter would win, but his fanbase has always scared me if we got a close match. Does anybody remember those IMDB End of the Year polls a while back?

http://www.imdb.com/features/rto/2006/poll/bestresults

Now I know this is a while back, but just look at the first one. That's probably AT LEAST 5,000 rallyed votes, on a poll which is not as clear as GameFAQS's would be (Is it even directly on the front page?) and which you might possibly have to register for.

creativename | Posted 11/4/2007 6:45:23 PM | message detail
Actually, if L-Block had wrecked this contest from the start, I would've loved it. Or even if he always juuust managed to come in first place, gaining in strength every round, but never needing it to have won his previous match.

The thing that really hurts this contest's "credibility", and the reason most will view it as a joke in retrospect, is that L-Block lost 3 matches. Fact is the 2nd-place character advancing is pretty dubious. Yes L-Block won within the rules he was given (yes L is a real person, what?), but it's still pretty embarrassing for pretty much the whole contest that he won despite getting his ass kicked by Kirby.

I don't think Harry Potter would win, but his fanbase has always scared me if we got a close match.

I really don't understand why people think Harry Potter would be so strong. He'd get absolutely annihilated by Vader/Batman/Wolverine/Spidey, trust me. If you expect him to get 40% against any of them you are setting your expectations way too high. He'd be fortunate to avoid the doubling.

Adding Anakin Skywalker to Darth Vader's name would help his chances?

Yeah I know, my reaction was the same.

Eh, yeah, this is GameFAQs. It just... doesn't seem as in flavor to have a fictional characters contest. I'm personally not really interested, and I doubt it'd ever happen. Why's everyone talking about this, anyway? Was there a daily grind that implied it could happen or something?

Why's everyone talking about this, anyway? Was there a daily grind that implied it could happen or something?

Fictional character contest discussion is a very common semi-on-topic theme that derails these topics anytime a match is boring. Because the notion grabs most people's attentions very quickly.

As for it not being the site flavor, just make it "appeared in a video game". You're basically not changing the base at all. Any fictional characters who'd be worth having in terms of strength would have all appeared in a game anyway. (Hamlet would be lucky to be lower midcard! ...wait, has Hamlet ever appeared in a game?)

I can't even begin to comprehend how you could think this. You would be very, very wrong.

Character contests draw more hype than games. Stronger characters means more hype. Take only the strongest game characters we have, add in the strongest appeared in a game characters, and the hype would beyond games could get.
