I wondered today how Lord of the Rings characters would do in these contests. I think Star Wars would be like FF7 with its deep stack of strong characters, but Lord of the Rings would be like FF6 - it would do very well in any sort of "Best Thing" type poll, but it's characters would be a lot weaker than the series itself. I think it's strongest characters might be Gandalf, Aragorn, and Gollum, but I see them struggling to be midcarders. Clinkeroth has had higher separation, sure, but to many that was already 'broken' before it started thanks to Mario > Cloud. ...geez, if I had known there was going to be so much obnoxious discussion and fighting over the term due to this result I would have voted Crono. >_< --- Samus 2K5 is horribly underrated, and is indirectly stronger than Mario. KHF sucks and never existed either, much like my package. |

We need to get Barret in one of these contests. I say screw Aeris and
Tifa next year and put Barret in instead. Black characters are needed

I'm not sure why people care so much about the concept though. I was
never a fan of it when it originated, because I thought there were a
number of characters who were capable of beating a Noble Niner (e.g. SF
Ryu), but that never materialized so I began to accept it as a legit
concept. It's no big deal though. That's the thing, it wasn't a "concept". It was a name given to a particular group of characters (2003 Elite 8 and Crono). Otherwise, why did it stop at nine? In 2003, Sonic certainly wasn't far and away stronger than the rest of the competition. And people certainly weren't thinking about the whole "they must have been in every contest" at that point seeing how there had only been 2 contests. The "only lose amongst themselves" thing wouldn't have made much sense back then for the same reason (only 2 years worth of matches). It was just a term given to the Elite 8 and Crono, just to save having to type out "Elite 8 and Crono" all the time. Just like X-stats being coined because typing out extrapolated stats all the time got tedious. --- Proud Supporter of Zero |

Any thoughts? Pretty much agree. I can't see anyone from the LoTR games surpassing someone like Jill. If Luke Skywalker is eligible, how strong would he be in relation to Vader? |

needed and he would be stronger than Aeris. I'd be pretty surprised if he was stronger than Aeris. Red XIII would unquestionably be stronger, and there's a good chance Cid Highwind would be too. Link has opened up a 25% vote gap on him. The #2 Nintendo mascot is destroying #1. Given the outcomes of recent polls, today's result is hardly surprising, though if you'd told me a few months ago that Link would easily dispose of Mario in a popularity contest with a 100,000-voter base, I would have been very skeptical. But Link has proven himself head and shoulders above Mario, just as he did Sephiroth, and by proxy, everybody else in the tournament. Mario. Cloud Strife. Solid Snake. Crono. Sephiroth. MegaMan. Six big names. Along with Link, it would not be unfair to label these the "elite seven" of the tournament, adding the impressive Blue Bomber and dark-horse Eastern champ to the five names who so clearly stood out on the odds list published two months ago. None of these seven was ever defeated by anybody from outside the group, and whenever two of these seven clashed, the result was a close battle. And it's far to say that any match within the Elite would have been similarly close. Close... unless that match involved Link. Mario - the man who proved himself against tough opposition - was utterly destroyed. Sephiroth fared much better, and fans of the FF7 villain can take solace in the fact that, by being the only character to drop Link below the 60% mark, he has a good claim to the title of #2 character in the contest. But in the end, even he could not threaten Link; his semi-final loss was obvious from the first few minutes of voting. Poor Mario. Excluding the laughable Link/Scorpion affair, which can be blamed on the rather sorry half-division that was the upper South, his eventual loss represents the biggest blowout of the final nine matches, and by a good margin. I don't begrudge Link the victory at all, but I would have liked to see the character who better than anyone else can claim the status of video game "legend" at least put up a good fight. Congratulations to Link. He just didn't win, he made it look easy. Never once did he have a victory that was suspect. In a contest which a some accused of being marred by cheaters, or skewed by campaigning, Link rose above all the mess. People may question the victories of Samus or Mario, but nobody will ever question Link. And given the bitter nature of a certain minority of the Contest followers, that is truly impressive. Would 40% be good for you guys against Samus, MM and Ryu? MM & Ryu = roughly equal to Vincent & Crono. But Samus >>>>> Zero. I'd say 40% there would probably seal Link's fate. |

At this point I'd say Cloud needs 40% to keep hope alive. Anything significantly higher or close to where Link ends gives him favorite status, even for me. --- Samus 2K5 is horribly underrated, and is indirectly stronger than Mario. KHF sucks and never existed either, much like my package. |

I think maybe you're right about this "it was just a shorthand reference" thing. Which is also probably why people will continue to refer to it. I can't see anyone from the LoTR games surpassing someone like Jill. Well actually I'm no believer in Jill, so I don't know about her. I could maybe see Aragorn or Gollum taking her out. I'd pick Gandalf over her. If Luke Skywalker is eligible, how strong would he be in relation to Vader? Well he'd certainly get SFFed to death 1-on-1, but I think he'd be pretty strong. He has a bit of a Tidus thing going on, but he's vastly more iconic (and people grew up with Luke, not with Tidus) - he'd probably be stronger than Han Solo, despite Solo being more charismatic (and probably more SFF resistant vs. Vader). Then again, I'm a big proponent of Samus/Mega sharing a fanbase and
with Ryu being Ryu, Cloud being the only Square should *really* stand

| I say for tommorrows poll instead of the next
match, we settle the Vincent/Crono Issue with a 1v1 match. From todays
showing though for crono and how poorly hes doing right now I would

How would Harry Potter do? I guess he would get anti-voted a lot but

Squall has never lost to anyone outside the TT... so he should be in. But having to beat another member would be a requisite of any such concept at this point. Even though Snake and Sonic took forever to do it. If Vincent had been in the 2003 contest, he probably would have been
added to the concept anyway. Especially when you consider how strong

| If you are talking about a direct CT sequel, it'd be almost impossible to make a good story based on how CT ended. Its been a while but IIRC there is no more need to go back on time traveling. |
