Yeah. That pic looks pretty neutral to me, too. No one really stands out as having a big advantage, although I like Vivi's pic.

Now we just gotta see the black mage move on!

Well, I'm back. Looking back on the last two matches...

WHOA @ Master Chief. Pre-Brawl Sonic simply cannot compete with that kind of domination in this format. He's gonna have to come out firing in his next match to show he's legit, or MC is gonna be looking more toward upending Snake than dealing with SNOIC

WHOA @ Liquid. ;-; What happened? You can't cite the picture or an absence of stuffing/rallying for that kind of a result, Something Funny happened there. The easiest culprit that springs to mind is potential FF/MGS overlap, but... a fanbase disproportionately preferring Yuna to Liquid? I find it easier to believe that Liquid got 'casual SFFed' by Master Chief or that he just straight-up bombed to that.

And heh, wow, good showing by Ammy today. Makes me almost want to disengage blinders to see *certain* reactions to her pulling this out... almost. Dante's doing about as I expected, we just gotta see Leon now to size up that Round 3 showdown. No Ada getting in the way at least, that's for sure!!

Match XLIV: Pikachu vs. Tidus vs. Leon Kennedy vs. Vivi

Past Matches

Round 1

Pikachu - 36.62%
Tidus - 31.84%
Isaac - 17.60%
Serge - 13.93%

Leon Kennedy - 40.13%
Vivi - 30.87%
Ridley - 18.88%
Spyro the Dragon - 10.13%

Analysis

Last round we saw Pikachu taking the upset and beating Tidus. Was this Tidus getting weaker or Pikachu getting stronger, we’ll find out in this match. Also last round we saw Leon destroying Vivi in a match that many of us thought will be close; looks like Resident Evil 4 for the Wii did wonders for Leon’s strength.

Leon will take first. With Tidus and Vivi being in the same poll they’ll probably take each other out and even if this was all Pikachu gaining last round I don’t think it’ll be enough to beat out Leon, but he may make the match close for Leon. With Ada not looking to beat Amaterasu Leon is looking better and better in making it to round four.

After his last round performance Pikachu is the favourite in coming in second in this poll. While there was some discussion on whether or not Pikachu would make it to round three not many people thought he would beat Tidus. Pikachu does have a small chance at coming in first, but with Leon’s performance that may be a little bit of a stretch.

In my bracket I have Tidus coming in second and while I no longer see him coming in second I think he is strong enough to beat Vivi. Tidus is a lead character in FFX while Vivi is only a side character in a less popular Final Fantasy. However Vivi does have the Black Mage appearance behind him to give him strength.

While I believe that Tidus would beat Vivi he does have every chance at beating Tidus. Like I’ve said being a black mage does help him and really between two Final Fantasy characters anything could happen. Unlike Squall/Tidus of last year I don’t think there will be a lot of SFF, but because of that it’ll spell the doom of both characters.

Leon will take first while Pikachu will take second. There is a chance that Pikachu can take first or third, but I won’t count on that. Had Vivi and Tidus been from different companies this would have been more of an interesting match, but because they are from Sqaure my interest for the match has dropped.

charmander6000’s Prediction: Leon - 32.36%, Pikachu - 28.38%, Tidus - 21.62%, Vivi - 17.64%

Why are people putting Pikachu so close to Leon??? Is beating Tidus some kind of accomplishment? The guy barely did better than Geno against Squall and is probably more hated than Pikachu these days. Its not like Pikachu blew Tidus off the face of the planet last round.

I'm not automatically giving Pikachu the win tomorrow. His dominating performance over Tidus could have simply been the fact that there was no particularly strong character to take up the votes, so Pikachu served as the best option to those that don't care for Tidus. In the presence of stronger characters like Leon and Vivi, Pikachu could lose a bit of his perceived "strength" last round, since the competition is more balanced this go round. I know that is generally the case the majority of the time in this contest, but I think Pikachu loses even moreso than normal.

Inspite of his lack of divinity and not being the main character of a thoroughly awesome game (that would be Mr. Airplane Wing), that would actually be pretty interesting. He could either be the new fodder or the next OMG H3'll b34t SNoiC guy.

That would be FUN!

Division 6: Round 2 - Match 44 – Pikachu vs. Tidus vs. Leon Kennedy vs. Vivi

Moltar’s Analysis

Pikachu
Round 1 – 36.62% vs. Tidus, Issac and Serge

WHY GAMEFAQS?

Tidus
Round 1 – 31.84% vs. Pikachu, Isaac and Serge

Oh that’s why.

Leon
Round 1 – 40.13% vs. Vivi, Ridley and Spyro

Leon keeps looking better and better.

Vivi
Round 1 – 30.87% vs. Leon, Ridley and Spyro

The Black Mage doesn’t do too badly.

hey guys since some of your fellow gamefaqsians voted for pikachu as if they had a gun to their head, I know seriously have to consider him in this match thx guys

Leon’s Round 1 domination should leave people pretty confident in him to take first. Now the question is who takes second? Well, Vivi looked to be pretty safe a while back, but now…not so much.

POKEFEAR has ran through this Contest like the plague. Round 2 has been even more crazy for these things. Bidoof leading Vincent, Mudkip over Ganon and Luigi, crazy, crazy things that I thought were only possible in the dark place. Not many foresaw Pikachu taking first over Tidus on the board, and thanks to that, he’s in a good position to take second here.

Even worse for Vivi, the Mage now has to deal with Tidus in the same poll, and he’s all like “hay vivi im in ur poll, stealin ur voterz”. I mean, Bidoof’s and Mudkip’s chances to make Round 3 weren’t all that good, but Pikachu? He may be considered the favorite at this point. Pikachu doesn’t have the joke vote bombardment his pals got in the beginning, but he also won’t collapse like they did. Pikachu’s got actual fans on GameFAQs, but the thing is, so does Vivi.

I originally took Vivi in second because I figured that he’d be able to pound Tidus hard with SFF, and Pikachu will be a non-factor. Only thing that’s changed is that Pikachu is now a factor. I still think Tidus won’t hold up well in this poll, and lose a ton of ground thanks to Vivi. That should give him enough to grab second.

plllllllease voters choose well i has moniez.

Moltar’s Bracket Says: Leon > Vivi

Moltar’s Prediction is: Leon: 36% - Vivi: 25% - Pikachu: 23% - Tidus: 16%

Ultimaterializer’s Analysis

Pikachu finishing ahead of Tidus in the first round was a surprise, but both of those characters are so weak overall that Leon and Vivi essentially have a bye week here. And Leon and Vivi finished so far apart in the first round that the same thing should happen again here.

Not trying to be an ass and have a short writeup for the hell of it, but this one seems obvious enough. Now watch the Ulti Curse kick in and give us Leon > Pikachu or something.

Ulti's Prediction:
Leon [40.00%]
Vivi [30.00%]
Pikachu [17.00%]
Tidus [13.00%]

Heroic Mario’s Analysis

Four Pokemon down, one to go!

Last round was pretty much a disaster, what with Pikachu beating out Tidus and Vivi not giving Leon the fight I was hoping he would. The only thing stopping Leon and Vivi from running away with this is the fact that Tidus is in the mix. We’ve seen how weird SFF can be when there’s two characters from the same fanbase in a poll, and despite how Vivi should clearly be the big beneficiary of SFF, there’s still a possibility they do something like split it, allowing for that Poketurd to advance.

But that’s basically all that Pikachu has going for it, I think. I wouldn’t even think twice about taking Vivi over Pikachu in this format under normal circumstances, and one-on-one it wouldn’t even be close. Although it is a bit suspect, Vivi held up pretty well against Sephiroth, all things considered. Tidus, on the other hand, pretty much got destroyed by Squall last year. Given that Vivi should be naturally the stronger character here, I don’t think it’s out of the question for Vivi to put on some hurt with SFF.
Master Moltar | Posted 10/15/2007 8:00:36 PM | message detail
I wouldn’t even look at this as a “FF9 character vs. FF10 main character” deal, either. Being Tidus isn’t a good thing on this site, apparently. The guy might only be a bit below Yuna and Rikku for crying out loud – time hasn’t been good to him. Vivi, on the other hand, is pretty much a representative of Final Fantasy. You don’t even have to really like Vivi himself in order to vote for him – the classic Black Mage design goes a long way, I think. That should help him out quite a bit in something like this.

As for Leon, I think he’s going to put up some good numbers here today. Dante’s putting up ~43% against Amaterasu, Ada Wong and Balthier. There’s no question that Leon’s got a much tougher pack, and if Leon can put up nearly 40% this round, I think he’d be a big favorite heading into the next match, especially with Ada Wong being eliminated today. He’s the strongest guy here and the most independent – he should impress.

But yeah, this match boils down to SFF. What happens there determines who advances, Vivi or Pikachu. And as much as I would like to see Tidus advance here, I think he’s pretty much guaranteed last. Gotta vote for Vivi, then!

Leon – 40%
Vivi – 24%
Pikachu – 21%
Tidus – 15%

Bracket: Leon > Vivi
Vote: Vivi

Yoblazer’s Analysis

Here's one of those matches that's special because, despite knowing it probably won't be exciting, you can't help but get all giddy when waiting for it. Well, at least I can't. Yes, I want Pikachu that dead. DIE YOU WORM!

The often imitated, never duplicated (and even more often quoted) Leon Scott Kennedy returns as the heavy favorite for the second round in a row. Leon would roast Pikachu and already handily defeated Vivi last round. This time around, Vivi will almost certainly be weakened by a fanbase split with Tidus, the RE4 hero is bound to look great.

We know Leon is going to get first; this is a given. We also know Tidus is going to get fourth. The amiable (well, he would be if he had a better voice actor, dammit) FFX protagonist already suffered a humiliating loss to Pikachu in Round 1. While most people attribute this loss mainly due to a fanbase split between the two other RPG guys sharing the poll, he's up against an even bigger RPG hog in Vivi this time around. Sadly, Tidus will come out of yet another contest looking like absolute crap. And I'm just starting to like him, too...

Of course, this leaves the main course for this match, Pikachu vs. Vivi. There isn't an experienced bracket maker in the world who wouldn't take Vivi over Pikachu in a straight match, but this format has proven time and time again that it doesn't give two poops about traditional matches. Pikachu ravaged Tidus in the first round, and now Vivi will be handicapped by that same Tidus in his bid to make it through another round. Will the handicap be enough to let the Pokemon slip by? It's very possible, but I still think Vivi will pull this one off. I have a feeling he's going to hurt Tidus pretty badly, and Pikachu will suffer himself, seeing as he's up against much more likable competition this time around.

Despite all that, your winner... and favorite going into the division finals.... MISTAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH..... KENNEEEEEDDDYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!

Leon Kennedy - 35%
Vivi Ornitier - 25%
Pikachu - 23%

Karma Hunter’s Analysis

Annnnd after last night's little debacle of trying to send in my Crew writeup and failing miserably, I'm switching internet service providers. This message-that-you-don't-care-about-brought-to-you-by-Karma-btw-I-picked-Dante > Ada-so-it-doesn't-matter-Hunter

Pikachu

The lil' yellow rat finishes off the trifecta of Pokemon overperformances with easily dispatching of Tidus. Now he remains the one last hope for Pokemon to get to Round 3... kinda weirdly fitting, actually. And considering that instead of Link/Vincent and Ganondorf/Luigi to deal with, he has to merely beat out one of Leon/Vivi... yeah. Yeah yeah.

Tidus

The guy hasn't had an impressive performance since 2003, and he probably won't for the rest of his contest career. Today, he only serves to drain another so that they'll suffer the same ignominy as he's suffered.

Leon Kennedy

Establishing himself as a force in this contest/format and a legitimate threat to Dante in Round 3, Mr. Kennedy proved his worth and then some last round against his threepack. He's not in any danger here, even with PIKAFEAR looming, but he should keep his domination up if he hopes to upend Dante in the future.

Vivi Ornitier

The Black Mage we all know and love is gonna be fighting for his spot against the last of the Pokemon - and unlike last round, he's gonna have the draining of an FF lead weighing down on him. Sure, it's Tidus, who most probably wouldn't take against Yuna or even Rikku in direct matchups, but considering how comfortably Tidus got edged last round, Vivi is in serious trouble here.

Pikachu didn't have any trouble with Tidus last round, and the writing on the wall is here for this round's matchup. Yes, Tidus probably got hurt by Serge, and may even have come much closer if it hadn't been for him (those who even consider Isaac hurting Pikachu at all, let alone the same level, are delusional - Mewtwo, Bidoof, and Mudkip proved that even the heaviest of heavy-hitters probably didn't SFF Pokemon that much, and it's Isaac), but the same situation is here. Vivi is likely stronger than Tidus, but Tidus is stronger than Serge. Vivi would need to be a clear cut and then some above of Pikachu for me to have faith in him here, and last round's matchup didn't inspire that at all.

This should be an interesting learning experience for one of the only two legit Pokentries in this contest, and for Leon's chances against Dante, but not much more. Vivi winning would be cool, but so would have Tidus.

Karma Hunter's Vote: Vivi Ornitier. Hope springs eternal?
Karma Hunter's Krazy Prediction: Leon Kennedy with 35%, Pikachu with 27%, Vivi Ornitier with 24%, Tidus with 14%

And that's me being optimistic !!
Master Moltar | Posted 10/15/2007 8:01:40 PM | message detail
Upset Probability: 60%

Okay, yeah, I'm sounding pessimistic, but Vivi *can* win this, especially if Tidus doesn't drain him too much (-can- you drain BMF???) and if he is just a clear cut above Pikachu... again, not impossible if Tidus has just become a speck in the wind these days. However, this chance is a little misleading - it also accounts for a small chance of Pikachu > Leon Kennedy.

...which won't happen. I mean, it just can't. Right?

But ya gotta be sure...

Transience’s Analysis

let's do this.

Leon Kennedy

a lock for first place. the only purpose that Leon serves in this match is to see how he measures up against Dante's performance, and maaaaaaaybe to steal some votes from Pikachu since they're both technically Nintendo guys. that makes next to no sense though.

Vivi

Vivi oozes appeal with his character design, a design that is so appealing that people will vote for him despite not knowing who he is. he is, by far, the strongest FF9 character and one of the biggest fan-favourites the popular series has ever created. however, given FF9's relative popularity when compared to FF10, will Tidus significantly hinder the guy that is likely the second-strongest in this match?

Tidus

49% on Ganondorf, 35% on Mega Man, 42% on Kirby, 35% on Squall, and now a 6000 vote loss to Pikachu. (53.5-46.5 if you want to measure them straight-up). Tidus's fall from grace is well-documented, and every year it gets more and more embarrassing. you can make the argument that Serge and Isaac held him back in that Pikachu match, but Vivi will hurt him more than those two ever could. the main from the most popular RPG from the last generation looks like a lock to place fourth.

Pikachu

the beneficiary of the single luckiest bracket placement in my memory, and I'm not saying that because I hate him. three RPG characters, two of them from Square, in round 1. two Final Fantasy characters in round 2. Ada was dangerously close to advancing to round 3, giving Pikachu two Resident Evil 4 characters should be make round three. with Pokemon characters impressing left and right and the Square fanbase split, he has as good of a chance as anyone to advance.

let's start here by comparing Tidus and Vivi. Vivi seems more liked, but his fanbase is a lot smaller - it's like nobody on this site even played FF9 for whatever reason. (the same goes for FF12, apparently, despite it selling a million copies and not budging from the top 5 FAQs since the day it came out. who knows?) Vivi and Tidus looked like near-equals statistically prior to this contest. looking at their Square matchups, though, Tidus got 28% on Squall while Vivi got 30% on Sephiroth. to compare, Sephiroth scored 48% and 44% on Cloud while Squall scored 23%. Vivi's inter-company matchup was a ton better, and he has to be looked at as the favourite between those two. (not that anyone doubts this anymore after his bomb vs. Pikachu)

now, will Vivi be able to beat Pikachu with Tidus holding him down? I think Vivi (and Tidus) is straight-up stronger than Pikachu and would have no problem dispatching him one-on-one. I think Pikachu is fairly legit -- maybe at Ocelot's level or something -- but not enough to stand up to the Final Fantasy mascot. Pikachu is kind of a Pokemon mascot, but he has nothing on Vivi when it comes to visual appeal. a vote for Vivi is a vote for Final Fantasy, there's no denying that.
Master Moltar | Posted 10/15/2007 8:02:43 PM | message detail
but I think Tidus will hold him back too much for Vivi to advance here. we've seen several examples of characters being held back, and it's not like Vivi is THAT much stronger than Pikachu. Tidus being in the more popular game really hurts Vivi here, I think -- I could see tons of people voting Tidus over Vivi even if they're merely neutral on Tidus. this match is just about 50-50, but I'm siding with the yellow thing over the black mage.

black mage, yellow rat
Meg Ryan can't beat either
Leon crushes both

transience's prediction: Leon with 34.38%, Pikac--

you know what? screw it. I refuse to pick Pikachu over goddamn Vivi. suck it, yellow rat. I don't even hate you, but you're just no Vivi.

transience's prediction: Leon with 34.38%, Vivi with 24.41%, Pikachu with 24.23%, Tidus with 16.98%

Guest’s Analysis - Big Bob

Alright, honestly, I only picked this match to spite HM, who seems to have some kind of inexplicable hatred against the cute critters known as pokemon. However! This shall be Pikachu's day of glory! Well, sorta. He beat Tidus quite handily last round, but now the competition is a little tougher. I doubt Leon is in any trouble; he has little fanbase overlap with the others here, so he should comfortably secure first. Tidus already lost, so that leaves Pikachu and Vivi. 1-on-1, I MIGHT give Vivi the advantage, since anyone can plainly see him and know that a vote for him is a vote for Final Fantasy. However, with Tidus in the same poll sucking votes from him, I find it unlikely that he can withstand a yellow mouse being in the poll. I always saw Vivi and Tidus being rather close in strength anyway, and I don't buy any SFF in the last match. If Serge was sucking Tidus's votes, Isaac was sucking just as much from Pikachu; they're on the same system, at least. Pikachu also isn't going to have the same voting patterns as Bidoof or Mudkip; he's an icon, not a fad, so he's not going to be top heavy like the others. If he's winning at the start, he'll probably stay that way. Leon > Pikachu should be a comfortable pick, but even Leon should be wary in Round 3 when he's sharing a poll with Dante.

Leon - 32%
Pikachu - 28%
Vivi - 24%
Tidus - 16%

Crew Consensus: POKEFEAR, yeah, but Leon > Vivi baby.

I'm starting to wonder if Leon is any stronger this year than last year... I'm looking at Ada Wong today, who doesn't seem to be any stronger than her match against Samus last year suggested. Maybe Tidus is being underestimated, too. Hey, and given Pikachu's non-linearity that some suppose, Pikachu could give Leon a scare. (uh, maybe)

Pikachu finishing ahead of Tidus in the first round was a surprise, but both of those characters are so weak overall that Leon and Vivi essentially have a bye week here.

So, Leon > Pikachu is a lock now, right?
