Sorry for being late on the discussion today, but between work, school
and many homework assignments I haven't had much chance to post lately. First, I have to say great job by Leon here. This makes me feel a little less worse about Ada > Balthier, since it seems RE4 has boosted yet again. Leon > Danta is now a distinct possibility, especially since Dante hasn't had much lately. As for stars/turds, Midna, Balthier, Tidus, Magus and Raiden for sure. 2 were newcomers and 1 had only 1 match (an SFF killing), but they performed near the absolute bottom of the ranges we had for them. Especially in Raiden's case, given how great all the other MGS characters have been doing. I'd wait until next round to see Ada before passing final judgement on Balthier, so I'll have to give turd of the round to Tidus. He bombed hard in a match he should have won. People say SFF hurt him, but I think Isaac and Pikachu have just as much (if not more) overlap than Serge/Tidus. People mention Serge as a turd, but I honestly expected him to get murdered there. Tales characters should get a collective turd award for worst game/series. Stars include 3 of my dark horses (Chief, Marcus and Pikachu), and notable mentions go to Ryu, Mewtwo and Meta Knight. Chief is easily the star of the round though. A lot of people expected him to win that match, but I don't think anybody thought he'd dominate THAT much. Pikachu is notable among the Pokemon in that he performed above almost EVERYONE's expectations. People were calling for Mewtwo to have some strength, and Bidoof/Mudkip had the weakest opponents in the contest, but Pikachu proved himself against a Final Fantasy lead. Metal Gear Solid should get the award for best game/series as (except for Raiden) they all performed above our expectations. TuRtLe ~~~ 67/92 in the contest. Next pick: Leon > Vivi BlAcK TuRtLe. I think the problem with the old format, was that after seeing 1v1
matches every year, it became really easy to predict. Now that we have
a year off of 1v1 character battles (maybe 2 years if we get a games
contest next year. I'd rather have a 128 games contest than a smaller
game contest and another character battle) next year should be nice and
interesting even with 1v1 matches. TuRtLe ~~~ 67/92 in the contest. Next pick: Leon > Vivi BlAcK TuRtLe. The cream of Zero fanboyism |

This contest has been pretty cool, but a lot of that has to do with the fact that we're seeing a lot of new characters/characters we haven't seen in a while. If we had a 128 Character Battle with 1 vs. 1 matches, we would probably have the same amount of exciting/surprising matches; they would just be spread out more. And I know this is completely biased, but I just feel like 1 vs. 1 is more epic and fair to the contestants. Also, that L-Block picture sucks. It looks like it's from some M-rated Tetris game. --- "Look out-- It's Liquids and Gases!" |

Last year he seems to have disappointed against Luigi, but that was the same Luigi that beat Zero, apparantly a Luigi that was on the high-seed roids that Kirby experienced the previous year. Nonetheless, Kirby is looking to dominate this fourpack. L-Block Easily the best joke entrant this year, made even better by the fact that it has a chance to advance here. Laharl Summer 2004 Contest Midgar Division - 9 Seed Midgar Round 1 --- Lost to (8) Vyse, 27360 [39.77%] - 41440 [60.23%] Extrapolated Strength --- 52nd Place [14.25%] Summer 2005 Contest 20XX Division - 6 Seed 20XX Round 1 --- Lost to (3) Yoshi, 25949 [26.34%] - 72563 [73.66%] Extrapolated Strength --- 62nd Place [14.01%] Another one of those "why do people keep nominating you?" characters, Laharl is mid-high fodder and hopes that the L-block bombs in order to advance. Yeah, he's that crappy. Nathan Hale Star of the PS3 exclusive Resistance: Fall of Man, Nathan hopes to set a new record for suckitude here. Predictions: Another fodderific fourpack with a strong character at the helm, Kirby gets to flex his muscles before being tested against Kratos of God of War fame next round. Once again the real debate lies in second place. We can basically rule out Nathan Hale because lol ps3. Which leaves us with Laharl and the L-block. Laharl may look really weak in the 2k5 stats, but you have to remember that he was behind that Mega Man/Yoshi anomaly, so he has a decent shot here, especially given how Sailor Bacon managed to screw up the picture of a freaking Tetris block. L-block needs some joke votes to advance here, especially since Laharl will be pulling on his cult status to favour him (though admittedly, cult characters have been extremely disappointing so far this year). I still think the L-Block pulls it off. TuRtLe's Prediction: Kirby 48%, L-block 22%, Laharl 20%, Nathan 10% TuRtLe's Bracket: Kirby > L-block TuRtLe's Vote: L-block TuRtLe ~~~ 67/92 in the contest. Next pick: Leon > Vivi BlAcK TuRtLe. The cream of Zero fanboyism |

Oh good, a stats topic worth posting in. Various issues: - Stars so far are Master Chief, Pokemon, and Metal Gear. Duds are Pit, Square and the entire female bracket. (I'll give you Samus and Ada Wong and that's just about it.) - This format made me sign up for an account here, so yeah, I think it's cool. I'd hate to never see 1-on-1 matches again, though. I think they should alternate: 1-on-1 next year, then back to 4-ways, and so on. Or maybe they could throw a bunch of newbies/undercard characters into 4-way matches for one contest, then take the best contenders and put them up against the big boys 1-on-1 for the next. That might be worth seeing two contests a year, I think. - I've been banking on Laharl for second for a while now, but I'm not counting L-Block out. Not after Mudkip and Bidoof both managed to get through. That match pic sure isn't doing L-Block any favors, though. - What the hell, Spyro. What. The. Hell. |
