Simple Explanation of Extrapolated Standings:
A = Strongest Character
B = Character Weaker than A
C = Character Weaker than B
To figure out a character's Xsts Percentage ---> [(CvB)(BvA)]/50 = CvA
To compare how C would do against B ---> [(CvA)/(BvA)]*50 = CvB
To figure out how B would do against A ---> [(CvA)/(CvB)]*50 = BvA

Analysis

This is the match of the round; any four of these characters have a chance to come in first or second. Some have better chances than others, but that doesn’t stop from the fact that this match could give the majority of the board 1 or 0 points on their brackets. Another good thing about this match is that there is no fanbase overlap in this match, unless you believe in Playstation SFF.

Before the contest started Alucard was the favorite to come in first in this four-pack of hell. People may doubt his ability to come in first, but I still think out of the four characters he has the best chance at placing. Last year he was able to match what Ness got on Auron, but last year’s Auron was probably stronger than the Auron Ness went up against. Of course Ness may be stronger now than he was in 2004. I don’t see Alucard having many problems with Zidane, even if he was SFF in his lone match I believe that Alucard is still strong enough to take him. I think Alucard’s biggest problems lie with Liquid Snake. Not only do we not know his strength, but with the performances of other Metal Gear characters he could take first rather easily.

Liquid is the true wild card in this match, he could take anywhere from first to last. With two contests appearances and two very different rankings no one really knows where he stands, except somewhere between his two rankings. Using Frog’s 2k5 ranking puts Liquid into striking distance of Alucard and with Alucard slowly dropping every year there could be very little stopping Liquid from taking first. If Liquid is 2k5 Frog Ness better hope for a huge Nintendo boost and Zidane hope he was totally SFF. Of course Frog and Liquid aren’t connected to the hip, but that number does seem to be the best we can get on him.

2005 was the year of the Nintendo Boost; every Nintendo character in that contest (which happens to be characters that were in SSBM) got some kind of a boost, everyone except for Ness. After upsetting CJ he was up against the future contest winner Mario. Like one would expect Mario SFF him so badly that he got less on Mario than Joanna. In adjusting the x-stats people just gave him his 2k4 number and called it a day. Like Pac-Man we don’t know where he truly ranks. Out of the five matches he was in two of them were SFF matches and the other two have only made one appearance (not including this contest). His only real match that could give us answers was Auron vs Ness, but he’s been behind SFF until 2k6 and that’s when he got his KH2 boost. However using 2k4 Tails and 2k6 Ganondorf puts Ness at around 46% on Alucard and if he got any kind of a boost with the Nintendo shift, which is likely he could be almost equal to Alucard and Liquid.
charmander6000 | Posted 9/21/2007 8:47:12 PM | message detail
Out of the four characters I believe that Zidane has the least chance at advancing. Seeing that all three characters seem to end up at around 2k6 Alucard Zidane would only be expected to get 38% on Alucard. However in his lone match he was against another Square character, Crono. There are people that believe that New Square and Old Square have completely different fanbases, but the only matches we’ve seen that were Old vs New Square was Crono vs Vincent and FF7 vs CT (which I believe that there was some SFF). Maybe Vincent wasn’t SFF (he actually overperformed, but that may have been because of Advent Children hitting the internet days before the match) because FF7 is higher on the Square hierarchy than CT. CT is probably higher on the Square hierarchy than FFIX, but I wouldn’t be surprised if there was some sort of different fanbase between Old and New Square so it probably wasn’t as bad as some SFF. While the degree of SFF is still question knowing that it probably wasn’t that bad doesn’t go well with Zidane who already has to catch up.

What will ultimately decide this match is the hardcore vote. Sadly the three characters in question already have a hardcore fanbase and this is just another nail in Zidane’s coffin. SotN is considered by many Castlevania fans to be the most popular CV game and has therefore developed a cult following. As I’ve said before Metal Gear characters have done well so far in this contest and Snake did beat Sephiroth last year so it is expected that Metal Gear to have a hardcore fanbase. The Earthbound fans may be small, but they were loud. They got many people to believe that Ness had a chance at beating Bowser back in 2003 and IIRC it was because of them that Earthbound became the favorite against Doom during the games contest. So with three hardcore characters the question becomes who has the biggest.

This is the match of the round, too bad it doesn’t mean too much because MC and Yuna are the favorites to take out whoever finishes in the top two. The closest four-pack so far was the Magus/PW/Bomberman/Crash match, but I think this match may be closer. We have three characters that are expected to finish close to each other and one that isn’t that far away. My predictions for the match is Alucard and Liquid start off fighting for the lead with Ness just being a step back, Ness will make his move in the morning and whoever has the better day vote between Alucard and Liquid will begin to painfully slowly break away and if Ness is close enough we could have a three-way race by the end of the poll.

charmander6000’s Bracket: Alucard > Ness

charmander6000’s Prediction: Alucard - 27.68%, Ness - 27.33%, Liquid Snake - 26.97%, Zidane - 18.02%

Time Round 1 --- Lost to (3) Auron, 41357 [35.60%] - 74808 [64.40%]
Extrapolated Strength --- 34th Place [26.93%]

Alucard has always had respectable strength in these contests, and despite him seemingly falling off a bit last year, I have a feeling that this format, coupled with his game being ported to the 360 and PS3's downloadable game libraries should help him pull off the win in this very debated match. He's easily the board favourite for first.

Liquid Snake

Summer 2004 Contest
20XX Division - 11 Seed

20XX Round 1 --- Lost to (6) Frog, 43820 [49.95%] - 43913 [50.05%]

Jenova Semifinal --- Defeated (3) Lavos, 42224 [55.62%] - 33694 [44.38%]
Jenova Final --- Lost to (1) Sephiroth, 22077 [24.08%] - 69599 [75.92%]
Extrapolated Strength --- 11th Place [24.08%]

While his previous appearances may not look too encouraging for Liquid, you have to remember that in the Villain Contest, he was up against Sephiroth himself, and we've seen time and time again how there's always funny business between FF7 and MGS characters. Liquid has a great shot at advancing here, especially with how his cast-mates have performed this year.

Mushroom Semifinal --- Lost to (1) Mario, 15696 [17.20%] - 75566 [82.80%]
Extrapolated Strength --- 47th Place [18.81%]

Ness is another character with misleading stats. We really have no read whatsoever on where Ness stands. He either winds up facing off against a newcomer that never made another contest again (except for Jak this year, but that doesn't really count) or he's behind massive SFF. Ness could be anywhere here. He could come in last, or he may come in first. We won't know until the match starts.

Zidane

Summer 2005 Contest
Flood Division - 7 Seed

Flood Round 1 --- Lost to (2) Crono, 22636 [23.28%] - 74580 [76.72%]
Extrapolated Strength --- 52nd Place [17.02%]

The ass-tastic lead character of Final Fantasy 9 returns to the field, and is yet another character in this match we have no read on with a potentially wide range. His one and only contest appearance was a first round blowout at Crono's hands, which may have been Zidane's legitimate weakness, or Square SFF. Most people are thinking he'll take last here, but one really can't say with the wildcards we drew for this quartet.

Predictions:

Easily the best fourpack of the first round on paper, this should be a VERY interesting match, with many different factors to consider.

First, Alucard. He's most likely the strongest of these characters, should benefit with this format and has had his main game ported to XBLA and the Playstation 3 thingy. The only way he'll lose here is if he's dropped more from last year, which isn't outside the realm of possibility.

Secondly, we have Ness and Liquid Snake, 2 characters that we have no reliable read on whatsoever. Ness has been behind obvious SFF in all the contests he's appeared in, and Liquid is behind that mess Frog created in 2k4, and a likely case of MGS/FF7 SFF in the Villain contest. Both have factors going for them. Ness is the sole Nintendo character and aside from his hardcore Earthbound following, he'll have support from his Smash Bros. appearances. Liquid has the fact that Revolver Ocelot, Big Boss and The Boss have all impressed solidly (lol get it) in this format.

Thirdly we have Zidane, who while considered the underdog, could actually have some strength here. His only match was a first round loss at Crono's hands, so who knows what Zidane might do without a Square character sharing the poll with him. Nonetheless, Kuja's craperific appearance in the Villain's contest coupled with Zidane's severe lack of nomination support mean he likely takes last here.

Expect this match to be close. Ness Liquid and Alucard all have reasons to flourish in this format and any combination of the 4 characters advancing is possible. This should be the closest thing to a 25/25/25/25 match we'll be seeing this year.

TuRtLe's Prediction: Alucard 28%, Ness 26%, Liquid Snake 25%, Zidane 21%
TuRtLe's Bracket: Alucard > Ness
