the only thing that differentiates the versions are a couple levels.

As someone who 100%'d both versions... no. As dual versions go, the games are actually EXTREMELY different, even the plots diverge quite a bit.

And Fisher isn't gonna get significantly stronger by releasing yet another standard game that no one on GameFAQs really gives a damn about except his fans. He's always been a constant, a low one at that - though Magus and his Samus bombing would tell you different, perhaps. <.<

Double Agent was actually seen as a disappointment by SC fans.

Not the ones I know. Perhaps not the best in the series, but not a disappointment.

Believe it or not, there are two versions of Double Agent by two different developers and the only thing that differentiates the versions are a couple levels. It was just very screwy though with Conviction coming out it looks to set it right.

I know, how does this factor into making Sam more/less recognizable/popular?

ehh Double Agent probably didn't boost Sam as it didn't sell terribly well and is the poorest reviewed game in the series. I don't think it brought any new fans to the series either. Maybe he would have got a slight boost if Conviction didn't get delayed until 2008.

Raiden should make it, considering Sam should only continue to slow down as the night goes on. This random rampage thing happened with Bomberman, too.

Man is it just me- or is this contest way more intense than usual? I mean the winner is usually easy to predict but the battles for second have been brutally close! I mean Sam and Raiden have a half percent difference! Regardless of who wins no one could say it was an easy decision.

I'm not worried about Raiden for the same reason Phoenix and Frog won. Should Fisher close the gap, he either won't have it in him to get over the hump or his lead will be so pitiful that he won't be able to hold off an "unpredictable" last surge from Raiden.

I'll say it again: when was the last time a nailbiter didn't go the board's way?

I'll say it again: when was the last time a nailbiter didn't go the board's way?

Notables include Sonic/Samus 2002 and Mario/Crono 2003. Not sure about recent examples where the board was entirely on the loser's back. I believe there was a split on Kefka/Vercetti, with more people liking Kefka.

Sonic/Samus I and Mario/Crono II were too long ago to count, especially since the board wasn't so united in groupthink as it is now. I'm pretty sure Vercetti was the bracket favorite here over Kefka, but even if he wasn't that match wasn't *technically* a nailbiter, it was only so because of the cheating, without it Vercetti wins easily.

And if you do count M/C II... then, there you have it, the last time it happened was in 2003.

Mario actually won the Board Vote in Mario/Crono 2003 though, so I'd say the Board was on his side. It wasn't until after that match the everyone realized how illegitimate his win was and turned against him.

It just sucks that the tension of nailbiters has been completely sucked out of me. I just look at a nailbiter and I'm like, "whatever, the board easily wins." Unless it's two characters coming out of nowhere in this format that the board didn't see coming (rare enough as it is), I don't feel any excitement over the result.

Even on the rare exception like Phoenix, do I look back and think he won that match legitimately?

Mario was the favorite, or close to the favorite, to win the contest in 2002 (remember, there were NO previous contest stats to go on and no way to gauge strength). It wasn't until Mario started sucking in the early matches did people start to go "OK, maybe he won't be the champion" and started to doubt him in his matches against Crono and Cloud (though he won both under screwy circumstances)

With Sonic/Samus, it was pretty divided as I recall though Sonic might have been favored more because he had Sonic Adventure 2 on the GameCube going strong on the site. Metroid Prime wasn't out yet, Samus was going on Prime hype and Super Metroid nostalgia at the time. The match still caused the biggest flamewar in Board 8 history until Mario/Crono II a year later.

I'm recalling this all from memory, so it might be hazy and not 100% accurate.
