I'm curious... considering how well Shadow did on Mario, it wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility for him to perform just as well (or maybe even better) on Bowser, despite his diminished popularity in the Sonic series (he performed well in the past when SA2B was at it's peak, however I'm sure it's safe to say he's declined since, considering Sonic Heroes wasn't nearly as popular and his own game wasn't received well at all).

If this is the case, and seeing how poorly Bowser is doing against Ryu due to SFF from Mewtwo (who I'm sure is legitimately strong and I could see performing in the top half of the bracket in a normal contest setting) and Toad, then it's actually very likely that he and Shadow will split enough of the votes in the second round that Ryu gets an easy pass into the third round behind Auron.

Hopefully not, and definitely not something I took into consideration when making my bracket (I accurately predicted Ryu > Bowser, but I didn't expect the SFF to be this severe so I put Auron > Bowser for next time with little pause for concern), but it's something I could see happening. Shadow's influence shouldn't be overlooked.

I took it into account... I don't expect it to be anything like it is today, but I do think he'll be able to take away some of his fanbase, however minimal it is. You don't get 45% on Mario being that weak without something funny going on. Ryu still needed to really impress me today (and he definitely is), for Shadow's presence to affect Bowser enough, combined with his lack of a solid fanbase, to let Ryu advance. A lot of things have to come together for him to do it, and I'm really hoping they do.

I think people are getting carried away here.

This is unquestionably impressive for Ryu, but let's not act like Bowser is all of a sudden a big underdog next round.

This contest has had plenty of surprises (as expected - predictably unpredictable), and now people think they can confidently predict Bowser sucking against Ryu next round? I don't know about that.

Seems like the typical "The thing I had too much faith in disappointed, so now I'll have too much faith in the thing that beat it" type syndrome. TV sports talking heads always do this. "I won't underestimate that team again!"

Adept of Aiur
Also, Ryu has seen a significant increase due to the recent release of Super Puzzle Fighter II HD, available at your local XBox Live Arcade.

MY. DEAR. GOD. Thank you!! I had no idea a new Puzzle Fighter game was around. I used to play that all the time ages ago, back in Freshman year college. Great game. I'll be sure to get it.

ExThaNemesis
Yeah. Confirmed that Bowser's fans are just Mario fans going "hmm Bowser, he's from Mario vote for him" in the polls until he's against a character that's actually well liked.

Uh, no. Mario vs. Bowser's surprisingly low level of SFF confirms that Bowser isn't a coattails guy. He probably holds off SFF against Mario better than I think Yoshi could.

If Bowser gets 65% of Mewtwo+Toad's votes here, he's winning. I don't think that's an unreasonable expectation at all (and by the end of this match, that number probably goes down). 1 on 1 Ryu would do better than when Bowser/Ryu occurred, but I don't think he'd win.

There's a slight possibility of Shadow hurting Bowser more than Ryu next round, but outside of that, I think Bowser will in good shape for next round.

Auron/Bowser/Ryu is unpredictable - Auron seems like the clear favorite, but anything is possible there IMO. But I don't think Ryu has proven himself enough to be favored over Bowser there. I still give a slight edge to Bowser.

Ryu was nearly even with Bowser in last year stats. Mega Man put up similar numbers as Samus against (I'd say) stronger overall competition, so I'm inclined to believe they're legit. Shadow only needs to take a fraction of Bowser's votes, and even Auron I think would split with Bowser more than Ryu would.

Very possible, but I still think Bowser has a slight edge over Ryu for next round. There's no way Ryu is a clear favorite over Bowser though, unless people read way too much into this match.

He's enough of a coat tail guy to let Mewtwo and Toad leech him into second place EASILY.

I don't see what this has to do with that. This is a leeching issue, not an riding coat-tails issue.

For instance, Ganon is the ultimate coat-tails guy, but in the hypothetical Link/Cloud/Ganon match mentioned earlier, Cloud could well win because the vast majority of Ganon's votes probably come from people who otherwise would have voted Link.

Tell me you did not just compare Toad to the Midgar Zolom! Or Mewtwo, for that matter!

Hoo boy, lovin this, though. Ryu dishin out almost as much pain to three entrants as he did to Bowser alone.

You know, I had Cloud > Ryu in the quarter finals when I first made the bracket, thinking Mega Man and Samus would split enough for him to vault over them. I ended up changing it, of course. Not to say this is making me very confident of that anyway, but it'd be hilarious if that was the case.

Good point. Don't know about Midgar Zolom ;) but Tidus would probably leech enough from Auron for Ryu to win very comfortably in an Auron/Tidus/Ryu/(Mewtwo or whoever) match.

Eh, Bowser looks pretty coat-tailsy to me. Not in the league of Link/Ganon or Mario/Donkey Kong, but this was still a pretty big drop:

SC2K3 Bowser: 30.97%
SC2K4 Bowser: 20.41%

Teedus is Mewtwo and Zolom is Toad in that situation.

Though I would probably take Mewtwo over Teedus after seeing this.

You know, aside from Yoshi, Nintendo has been pretty meh in this contest so far, where-as the Square people have been dominant. Or at least Cloud and Auron have.

Cloud > Link, confirmed? =P

Samus and Tom Nook looked fine as well, and like Yoshi, they had no other Nintendo characters to steal votes from them. The only Nintendo character to disappoint with no excuse so far has been Midna, and yeah, that one stung.

There was an excuse for that though. Everyone just assumed she would be strong for no real reason. Thinking logically, TP was pretty underwhelming, especially in terms of lasting talk about it, and the story, despite being the best Zelda story, still pretty much sucked. And Midna wasn't such an incredible character anyway.
