We had 2 Pokemon make apperances in the last 5 contests (Pikachu, Nidoran F). In this contest, we have 4. Next contest, we'll have 8 and so forth, until we have the whole PokeDex.

Seriously, though. I don't want to say Mewtwo needs to give Ryu or Bowser a scare (because that's pretty unlikly), but if puts up solid numbers and/or draws a good amount of votes from like...Bowser I guess, I think he'd be worth seeing in a 1v1 environment.

According to this:

This should have never happened:

http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=1342

Obviously, this tells us that Bowser gets most of his support from non-Nintendo fans, and therefore will not suffer from SFF from Mewtwo and Toad.

4 way poll with Mario, Yoshi, Bowser, and Toad, are you honestly going to take Bowser to advance over Yoshi there with any confidence? I wouldn't.

Uh, Bowser did about as well against Mario as Yoshi did against Mega Man. Increased vote totals matter a lot, you know. Things work very differently in a contest environment.

The only reason Mewtwo did make it was because of board 8 so unless he beats or almost beats Bowser or Ryu I don't think we'll be seeing him.

Lettuce? I don't think it'll hurt Kefka - most of the people voting for him will probably be able to recognize his name, which can't be said in a general 1v1 - but why do we have to see that again? Even FMV Kefka would be better than this.

The other pictures all look pretty good.

Things also work very differently in a 1v1 match as opposed to a 4 way match. For every time you kids mock bringing up the favorites polls, I'm going to mock bringing up 1v1 contest matches. Yoshi just seems more likely to have more people who have him as close to his favorite character than Bowser, meaning he gets hurt less than Bowser as you add more and more entrants to the poll.

I don't expect Bowser will be doing nearly as well in these polls as his contest history would indicate.

Nintendo character vs. lettuce who I think will suck in a 4-way poll.

If you wanna bank on Nintendo character, Zelos is the one to go for. Company name be damned, Tales of Symphonia is so Nintendo.

1-on-1 matches are like a bazillion times more relevant than favorites polls. Maybe even a gajillion times. Infinity plus 1 times even? You get the point.

Whew, finally caught up on the stats topics. Took long enough! Entertaining reading though!

And wow, I am impressed with how well Scorpion is doing here. I had Kratos and Agent 47 fairly well pegged (...I don't know why people had Agent 47 so low. It's not like he had some super strong competition to push him way down closer to 10% here), but Scorpion is dominating. I had a feeling that fighting game fans might be more loyal than some others, and this might be showing itself true here. I'll have to wait and see though. This does make me feel better about having Ryu win the first match and advancing out of the division if that loyalty comes through.

As far as pictures go:

I'm almost positive Bacon gave Kefka his lettuce picture on purpose, what with the green background and all. No one really looks that good in the first picture, and surprisingly, Tom Nook stands out the most here.

Cloud is Cloud. Didn't expect much else than that. That Jill picture is weird. It's way too...bright. I was hoping Ocelot would get MGS4 art or something. Oh well, he can still pull it off.

...Why in the world is Shadow the Hedgehog so photogenic? Man, he steals ALL the attention in that picture.

The last picture is very well balanced, though I'd have to give the advantage to Toad if I had to pick as far as the one who stands out most.

And on the subject of Auron/Shadow, I don't expect Shadow to give Auron much of a scare. I mean, if Rikku can nearly beat Knuckles, someone who's probably as much of a fan favorite as Shadow (or at least close), there ain't no way Shadow even touches Auron here. Remember that Auron got over 40% in that Favorite FFX Character poll, and Rikku got 15% for second place. That's just ridiculous. Auron will be a beast with this format, I think. If he wasn't stuck against Cloud later in this division, I'd take him to go far.

Note that there is reason to be concerned about Bowser in this match, Ryu could pull it off. But that's because of Toad and Mewtwo and the obvious fanbase overlap, nothing to do with Bowser's performance in favorites polls.

Can you say that as a fact in this format after all four matches we've seen? In a lot of cases I honestly don't think either will be terribly relevant, but I do think it says bad things when a character falls way behind in a favorites poll yet has good performance in the contests for this format.

Also, adding up prediction percentages so far gives us this:

Samus Aran – 96.93%
Mega Man – 93.59%
Yoshi – 80.87%
Knuckles the Echidna – 59.12%
Frog – 42.74%
KOS-MOS – 30.09%

And for the record, Kerrigan outdrew Vaan by 9 votes, leaving the FFXII "lead" as the least voted character so far.

Those favourites polls are so outdate, with such low votals that I don't take any of them with a grain of salt. You also have to remember that we're only seeing 2 of the characters that were in that PotD. The votes from all the characters NOT in that match have to go to someone, and it's obviously going to be the stronger character overall (Bowser in this case) This is clearly shown in Bowser/Yoshi

(lol censor bypass again)

And yes, obviously the hugely dated favorites polls can be taken with a grain of salt. But some of the more recent ones where votals near 100000, I don't ignore them.

Those favorite polls, particularly the more recent ones, can be pretty useful. They're not law, but there's definitely something that can be taken from them, especially when there is one character who is dominating over the rest of the characters. The multi-polls we've had before are certainly not nearly as useless as they would be in a one-on-one format.

You just have to look at them as rough guidelines (much like one-on-one polls for this format). Seeing a character dominate his/her favorite character poll, or some type of multi-poll, probably an indication that they're going to be pretty good here, I'd say. But at the same time, you couldn't look at someone like Bowser and determine that he's going to suck just because he barely did better than Toad.

Analysis

This match is looking a lot like yesterday’s match; we only have one established character, a character that has only appeared in one match, two new characters, three out of the four characters can place in the top two (though the fourth does have a slim chance) and to top it all off one of the characters is from Tales of Symphonia. The only difference in today’s match is the established character is the favorite over the new character.

Kefka may not be anywhere near strongest character in the bracket, but in a match like this it isn’t hard to see why he is the favorite. In 2003 both Kefka and Tom Nook had the same opponent and Kefka did better despite being SFF harshly. In the Villains Contest Kefka lost to Diablo and in a couple of months later Diablo beat Kratos by much more than he did against Kefka. Zelos may be a fan favorite, but most ToS fans agree that Kratos is the most popular one.

The only character that most people are taking over Kefka is Marcus and since we don’t have any data on him we don’t really know much about him. Along with Midna and Nathan Hale Marcus’ first game came out around last Christmas. The three also have something else in common their games are one of the games to get on their respective systems. Judging his strength can be hard as he is one of those characters where fans of Gears of War may not recognize his name, but a proper picture may help him. I would rank him anywhere from beating Kefka with almost 60% to letting Kefka beat him with almost 70%. Also from looking at Midna’s performance yesterday Marcus may be suffering from old enough not to be front page news, but still recent enough to not have his potential strength.

The only way I can see Zelos advancing is if Marcus is really weak. I’ve already said that Kefka is stronger than Kratos and I don’t see Zelos being so near to Kratos, I would rank him at around Lloyd’s strength. Same can be said for Tom Nook except both Marcus and Zelos has to be overrated. Sure he has gotten a new game since then, but I don’t think that’ll be enough to catch up to the other characters.

After reading this analysis one would think I was going Kefka > Marcus, but really I’m going the other way. I may not be as confident as when I was predicting my bracket, but I still think Marcus has a chance at advancing though I won’t be surprised if Kefka took the match. Also Marcus got probably the best picture he could have hoped for, one where you can tell that it is him and lettuce Kefka.

charmander6000’s Bracket: Marcus > Kefka

charmander6000’s Prediction: Marcus Fenix - 34.35%, Kefka Palazzo - 33.75%, Zelos Wilder - 20.33%, Tom Nook - 11.57%

Yeah, charmander's reasoning (and even percentages) are pretty much along the lines of what I was thinking. Then I saw the match pic and juiced Fenix up a little bit.

It still boggles my mind that people keep nominating ToS characters. Have any of them even won a match aside from that horrible fodder on fodder match in 2k5?
