Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 454

Probably not, since there is also some sort of split with Mega Man.
RPGuy96 | Posted 9/2/2007 10:44:27 AM | message detail
You could throw Sephiroth and Vincent in there and Samus would probably still lose. Cloud's far too big of a draw to be hurt by Auron.

Between Auron being in the poll and MP3 being hot, would Samus stand any chance at first for this round?

Uh, no.

Looks like Bacon will be going with different themes than CJayC used for pics. Not only body shots for the first round, so we'll finally get the Kerrigan box art pic. I wonder what he'll do for later rounds...

I was looking through the guru contest and noticed many people have Fox taking first in his first match.

Why is everyone thinking that Fox is strong? I also noticed that not many people had Banjo placing. This whole match seems to be the truest big crap shoot of the first round to me, and I'm not sure what the thinking on it is.

Part of me is thinking Banjo is underrated and that Fox is being overrated.

I think Banjo is far too forgotten. I easily think Fox is the strongest out of the four-pack, however. 25% on pre-KH Cloud is at least worth something even if it's all we have.

I don't have much confidence in Banjo. He hasn't had a major release in years, and modern platformers usually don't do that well anyway. I'd give him around Conker level, but not much more. Don't know how much he'll split with the other three since he doesn't have any direct ties with them. I don't expect him to advance, but I wouldn't be surprised if he did if he can avoid SFF.

While Banjo might be a force if/when a new game comes out, it has been so long since he has seen the light of day that its just hard for anyone to predict him coming out on top of Nintendo characters that have all had recent "decent" (and i use that loosely) selling games. Fox coming out on top is troubling to me, I mean i would think Wario is more well known to the casual Nintendo fan? But the only real crapshoot in the match is 1st and 2nd...

Okay, and about my other point - what makes Fox any stronger than Wario or Falcon? A lot of people are assuming this but star fox games aren't what they used to be and Wario is actually getting some good games. Fox and Falcon were both in the first two smashes and Wario is joining them.

If anything it seems like Wario should have a fair boost.

Fox games not being what they used to doesn't take away the fact that Star Fox 64 remains one of the most popular and timeless games on the Nintendo 64. It's not like his popularity stemming from that game alone is suddenly going to disappear. And although his recent games have been underwhelming to most people compared to SF64, it's not like they are hated. People act like SSB is all that Fox has going for him.

Fox is the star of a series probably bigger than WarioWare, and SF is more about Fox than WW is about Wario. Fox is loved in SSB/M as well, and with this being an all-Nintendo match, being recognizable isn't really an advantage in Wario's corner. Wario has a chance, but I'm not taking it.

Also, just kind of an ethical thing here that's purely hypothetical...I think people have various opinions about sites linking to GameFAQs for matches. However, let me ask this: what if the SSBB-site followed the contest and, while never linking or even mentioning GameFAQs, planned their updates around characters in the contest time and time again? Whether it was a Final Smash, announcement of being in the game, a stage, whatever...but it happened repeatedly just before their matches. How would you feel about that?

SFA wasn't hated, just a letdown.

SFA might be, but that's probably more because of Krystal than Fox (not that I'd know since I never beat it).

SFA was...decent, it it wasn't Star Fox (which was the plan before Miyamoto came along and asked for Star Fox to be shoe-horned in) I always wondered what the reaction would have been. The game gets a lot of hate either for not having Star Fox shooting (which Dinosaur Planet never had) or for being a Zelda clone (it wasn't a bad one). It gets a lot of hate which I always felt was misdirected.

Assault was the worst Star Fox game, it was Star Fox shooting and it sucked.

As long as they don't mention GameFAQs, I'd have no problem with that. Game related announcements are always coming out during contest season anyway. If a company really wants to go so far as to plan announcements around a contest on a gaming site, that's their perrogative. Also, the only updates that would have any effect whatsoever are character announcements. Final Smashes, stages, music, etc would do jack crap.

Pic advantage to Mega Man for sure in the second one.

KOS-MOS looks totally different than I remember her being in the last contest, Arthas is missing half his face, and Diablo doesn't look menacing at all.

First match...... I'd say Yoshi. Knuckles seems kinda blurry to me

Vaan is especially screwed as Rikku might sap away any S-E votes, though it should be interesting to see it FF12 has any strength in this contest (personally I feel it is equal to FF9 in strength).

I actually expect Rikku and Vaan to split rather evenly. You have to remember that FF12 is a very new game, and did pretty good for itself, despite the lackluster cast.

Although I think you're wrong about Balthier. He has just the recipe for success in these contests. I don't think he'll be on Auron's level, but I'd take him over Vivi in a heartbeat.
