No twist was known pre-contest, though people wondered why CJay made a
bracket that Seph would so easily win. I think the most common theory
was that the three champions would be removed all-together, but as I
remember it, people mainly thought the contest would continue as usual. I dunno if anything was announced at nominations though -- the above is just my recollection of the 2k5 contest before nominations were up. --- PETITION: a "Contest Suggestions" board. After 2k4 there was a lot of talk of retiring the champions (Link and
Cloud) from the bracket. After the villains contest many people were
almost positive that Link, Cloud and Sephiroth will be removed. Plus

well, putting in the past winners would be a pretty dumb twist, so I
expect either tag-team or 128. tag-team seems to strangely make more

2k5 it was guaranteed that the winners would be removed. 2k4 was too
easy and Spring 2k5 was tailored for Sephy to win. I was very obvious
going in that Ceej was planning that. He even mentioned in his post-2k4

Even if he doesn't tear people apart, he's got Super Mario Galaxy
coming up, and even with MP3 coming out before that, I still see Samus

Oh no doubt. Snake and Mario would be a good match. That's what we have
a Tournament of Champions for. Yes Samus beat Snake, I don't care,
Snake won the male bracket and should therefore just be a champ by

no, Snake didn't win anything. he shouldn't be retired, not until we
actually see him win something. Samus shouldn't be retired either,
honestly. plus, I think Snake is the new Sephiroth - you just don't
know what's going to happen with each match. I'm 90% sure Mario still beats Snake - he's got everything Samus had and then some - but I don't want to just hand him the title when he only beat Crono-54-46 and looked very beatable the year before. --- xexyz |

Maybe your onto something. Perhaps we'll see if everyone is indeed in
the bracket. I still say it's a waste to unleash them all just for

The good thing about Snake is that he has nowhere to go but up from

There's no way he's taking out Link. If he can take out Cloud and
Sephiroth post MGS4 and SSBB, I will be jumping up and down. But

There's a sort of unwritten rule for these contests that should be
assumed whenever we talk about boosts, large or small -- the ceiling
for any character is a step below Link. I wasn't necessarily talking
about overthrowing Link, even though Snake being the top dog here would
be awesome,
but getting up there in that Sephiroth and Cloud area. It won't happen
this year, obviously, but if there's another character contest? I think

Link occupies the top rung of the Nintendo ladder, so Snake will have
to look elsewhere for support. Metal Gear Solid 4 will need to hit
every console, sell 10 million+ copies, be widely hailed as the best
game in years (if not ever), and spawn a movie and spin offs in order

It's got the capability to do that if Konami just markets it right.
Maybe not movies and spinoffs, but 10 million plus copies and on

If Snake killed Link halfway through the next Zelda game and became the
main character of the series afterward... he still wouldn't have a

Okay. Time out, people. I didn't say anything about Snake kicking
Link's ass -- we save that sorta thing for "way too much time on
GameFAQs" dreams. I was just saying that Snake, moreso than any other
character Link included, is the one character who's going to keep

Agreed. Link is too strong, but Snake is the best bet to take out
Sephiroth or Cloud. Hell, after watching Steroid Mario flounder against

Snake's never touching Cloud on this site.. not unless MGS keeps on
going another 5-10 years and Cloud is completely left alone. and even

I'd go a step beyond "possibility" and say that it's almost a
certainty, irrespective of what Sephiroth gets in the meantime. Unless
there's some sort of unforeseen shift back to Square -- which is
terribly unlikely with how unproductive the company has been -- I don't
see how Sephiroth holds anything in his corner that can stop the
combination of the Nintendo bases' backing and Snake reprising his role
as the main playable character throughout the duration of a Metal Gear

Well, part of that depends on how big SMG is. If it's as big as SM64, Mario's chances of defeating Sephiroth are...very high. And with the power of the Wii, who knows? --- Rapid analysis, accurate judgment, and superb powers of concentration. That is all we need. |

I won't bother going too much into it, but I really don't think so. It's almost impossible to play MGS3 and mistake who you're playing as for Solid Snake. People most definitely know
who and what MGS3 was about -- and it wasn't Solid Snake. I can't
recall back enough to remember what the game did for Snake the
following year (I remember had that terrible down period during 2004,
and then came back a bit in 2005, but I'd be hesistant to blame the
rebound solely on MGS3), but I do remember Big Boss making the contest
that year. Definite reason for that. I don't want the discussion to continue and balloon into something it doesn't need to, but you just can't overlook that aspect of MGS4.
