128 would run from september to.. new year's.

Two matches a day for the first round would shave off a month. Regardless, I might enjoy such a lengthy contest after an equally lengthy period of zilch. =)

the problem would be the sick amount of fodder and fodder vs. fodder matches. I certainly wouldn't mind a 128 contest, but it might end up feeling like that female bracket last year for a month straight.

If it did got that route, this would be a pretty good idea.

As for a twist, I think running this content in World Cup-format would be pretty cool. By World Cup, I mean starting off the contest with several small groups (each consisting of anywhere from four to eight characters). They'd all "play" each other, and the better performers from each group will go on to the main bracket of 32 (seeing as how 64 entrants would be far too much after the initial phase). That would certainly spice things up, and it would also easily allow several matches per day during the knock out stage. Once again, though, the problem here is that we'd have to see the same fodder take the field multiple times.

And 2 matches a day would be kinda boring. v.v

How on earth could they do more than 64 without doing 128?

Three brackets of 32 with Clinkeroth as 1 seeds and a 3-way final?

I'm just thankful that my initial fears of a Snubs tourney don't seem to be grounded.

maybe I'm just an elitist traditionalist or whatever, but I think that sounds too gimmicky. I like plain old-fashioned brackets. I wouldn't really opposed to such an idea, but good luck making a bracket or entering for a prize.

Regular old 64 bracket would be 100 A-OK with me, but the 15 nominations leads you to believe that something else is happening. I just pray that they stay away from any kind of team-based thing. That's the worst-case scenario for me.

Personally, while I'm overjoyed we're still getting contests at all, I'd like to see something new. It might not be the popular here among my fellow old fogies, but I'd prefer a radically different format to add spice and challenge. Even if the idea doesn't appeal to you, you've gotta admit that something like tag team or 4way matches would be a lot more unpredictable and debatable than the same matches between (mostly) the same characters.

I'll probably be happy with anything as long as Snake gets good pictures, though.

trannyscience | Posted 8/1/2007 6:02:44 PM | message detail
I don't disagree with you. it'd be unpredictable, just like the quotes contest would have been.

I just don't like the idea. a tag team contest is no longer about who's more popular and is instead about which two characters bridge the best fanbase. get the right nintendo-square team and it does fantastic, whereas if you stick Link with some bum and you're nerfing him. sure it's unpredictable, but I like the idea of intrinsic strength being the deciding factor instead of who your partner is.

..does that make sense?

FastFalcon05 | Posted 8/1/2007 6:20:28 PM | message detail
It makes sense, but I always thought we (collectively) were hoping for a tag team contest as something both new and doable. The idea was frequently tossed around, and I thought the unpredictability + possibility of good teams makes up for the gimmick factor. For what it's worth, sticking Link with Ms. Pacman probably doesn't hurt Link much, but then, we'd have to see, I guess.

Grrrrrreeeeeaaaaaat!!!

I think we'll see more than sixty-four characters. Though I don't know how, I'm hoping for 9-seeds and maybe even 10-seeds...like, before a 64-character bracket starts, we see some lower fodder/fodder between the bottom seeds so it's not JUST decided by nominations...plus we get some more potentially-close matches instead of just seeing the bottom guys blasted, even if they're not everybody's favorite. You can't tell me Donkey Kong/Duck Hunt wasn't one of the best matches to watch...

...but then again, I don't think we'd get that kind of match again -- the odds are simply against it. Still, it gives fodder about a week or so of excitement before we see them waylayed by the greatest.

To clarify, I suggest 8/9-matches and 7/10 matches, then let the winners face the 1-seeds and 2-seeds of each division.

ZFS | Posted 8/1/2007 7:40:37 PM | message detail
There's a couple of downsides to a 128 entry bracket, a big enough downsides to make me almost not want to see it. The obvious problem is a ton of fodder getting into the contest; entire divisions could end up being just as bad as the female bracket from last year. The second is that it would, in all likelihood, stick with the one match per day bit, meaning the contest is going to inevitably drag on through a series of terribly boring matches.

If there's any twist, I think that's what it'll end up being, but I think the best option for a character battle this year might just be a standard 64 entry bracket with no gimmicks -- not even the ToC or whatever. If the contests are still around next year, GameFAQs could just run the always desired game contest to spice things up.

I'm okay with a standard 64 character battle, but I think I would prefer 128 with two matches a day. I mean, we all know we could have a really interesting 64 bracket if enough time/input were contributed, but I think we also know that that just isn't going to happen.

i'm going to keep my fingers crossed for Tag Team, but, even if this year is a downer (and every battle has its moments no matter what), I'm sure we'll see another contest next year. Cnet would be stupid to let them discontinue based on the extra traffic they bring in.

I think a 64 character bracket for this contest will be the best. With so many great games out between last contest and this contest, many characters could be stronger/weaker then before.

Plus, with the last contest being as unpredictable as it was, I'd like to see if the trends continue this year or if it was just a fluke.
