Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 444

key words: behind Mewtwo. I can understand wanting weaker stuff in after you've seen the alpha dog, but nominate Mewtwo first. this is like wanting Vincent before Sephiroth or something.

He wouldn't be too far off from Mewtwo though. The way you said it made it seem like any other Pokemon besides Mewtwo would be a waste of time. Charizard is legit (on a relative scale of course).

I think he'd be a good chunk behind. it wouldn't be a wasted nomination or anything, but there's just no reason to go after him when everyone knows Mewtwo will be the best of the bunch.

How strong do you expect Mewtwo to be?

I'm not even sure why there's a sudden rush to get a Pokemon into the contest. I would be skeptical enough of Mewtwo's strength, let alone these other, lesser, Pokemon.

not that strong.. maybe 26%, like 2k5 Kratos level or whatever. kinda pointless to use percentages considering last year's stats, but eh.

Charizard is like.. 22%? would probably beat some cult RPG characters like Kratos Aurion pretty good, but would utterly flop against anything with a real fan base.

I'm going to agree with tranny here. Mewtwo is top dog in terms of Pokemon, with Pikachu and Charizard noticeably weaker, and all the other Pokemon far below the fodder line.

As for nominations, who's everybody going for to get into the contest that isn't a lock?

I'd like to see Fox back in, and I'd also like to see Protoman get a fair match.

Diddy Kong is another one I'd like to see make it.

I'm hoping that Raiden gets back into this year. I have a good feeling that he'd end up rather easily pulling in a second-in-command for the MGS series. It wouldn't hurt to see what he can do pre-MGS4, ignoring that he's been the talk of the town ever since that E3 trailer last year.

I'm pretty confident that - barring anything silly like another split bracket - Raiden will make it back in with some decent seeding to boot.

Let's hope so. I think he could hold his own against some good competition. No clue where I would place him in the stats, but he's come a long way from the SFF beatdown in '03.

Yeah, that's about what I figured. I wouldn't call that a chunk weaker, given that Mewtwo has SSBM in his corner. I'm just saying that Mewtwo isn't the head and shoulders definitive Pokemon as far as popularity goes. Had Charizard been made a playable character in SSBM, he would probably be about as popular as Mewtwo.

Raiden in a contest setting right now wouldn't really be a true reflection of what his strength would have been if he didn't go up against Snake right now. The MGS4 trailers have undoubtedly increased his popularity a bit. Especially that last one.

I've got no idea why so many people push for the tag-team concept. I think it's a horrible idea.

Raiden needs to come back in 2008, not 2007. not that him making it in 2007 is a bad idea, but the real Raiden will show up in 2008. I'm not buying Raiden hype, sorry.

ZFS | Posted 7/31/2007 9:58:13 PM | message detail
Oh, yeah. Those MGS4 trailers have undoubtedly had an affect on his popularity; he's always in the center of the buzz every time a new one comes out. It'd just be something of a taste of what MGS4 should end up doing for him, because what we've seen so far is apparently just the tip of the iceberg for Raiden in the game.

It has to be asked but, Ike... Potential contest strength? Not that he'd likely get in, but with PoR, GoD and now SSBB, he could possibly be the strongest Fire Emblem rep?

...nobody's mentioned Jigglypuff? I don't think there's many people who like Pikachu and dislike Jigglypuff, and Jigglypuff is still the less hated one, and I think would be stronger. I'd consider Jigglypuff over Charizard, too... I just don't see Charizard over the fodder line.

it is a bit of a surprise, yeah. I'm fearing the worst - a tag-team contest.

I don't care enough this year to do a nomination rally, so I'll just post here that I want to see Akuma in. after that, I'll be nomming all old characters that need to return.

From the Summer 2006 Contest nominations page:
"The following characters are guaranteed positions and do not need any nominations: Link, Cloud, Sephiroth, Mario."

No such line appears on the Summer 2007 Contest nomination page. It didn't appear on the Summer 2005 Contest nomination page either and we had a ToC that year so it might not mean much.

Solid Snake - Metal Gear Solid
Raiden - Metal Gear Solid
Diddy Kong - Donkey Kong
Seifer - Final Fantasy 8
Balthier - Final Fantasy 12
The Nameless One - Planescape: Torment
Mewtwo - Pokémon
Fox - Star Fox
Ashe - Final Fantasy 12
Wario - Wario
Knuckles the Echidna - Sonic
Magus - Chrono Trigger
Amaterasu - Okami

Argh, two more and I have no clue who to nominate. I'm going to save the last two for strong midcarders who might need the extra help, I suppose. I think I have all my guru/rally obligations done, at least.

You might be onto something with the 128 character bracket. I don't think it'd be that much, but the idea of more than 64 might be a possibility.
