the only match in that fourpack I'm sure about is Magus > Zero. I do think the winner of Dante/Knuckles'll take Magus, though.

Eh, why would you be sure of Magus > Zero? Chrono Trigger isn't getting anymore popular on this site either...

I wouldn't expect Magus to come that close to Knuckles anymore either. I'd say he's overrated a point or so simply because of how heavy a favorite he was (sure, most of that is a B8 thing, but you can't tell me that doesn't matter, especially with how seriously a lot of us take the contest - rallying is a given, and I wouldn't put cheating out of the question).

Magus/Zero is a 50/50 affair using straight 2k5 stats. Mega Man/Crono is a 50/50 affair going by straight 2k6 stats. Both entities appear to at least be somewhat on the decline. Zero might have disappointed last year, but Magus didn't make the bracket at all.

That match isn't a given.

Mega Man isn't getting anymore popular either. Magus is probably slightly weaker this year and I expect him to squeeze past Zero in a match-up if it were to take place. I'd never expect Zero to ever come that close to Knuckles.

Note that I did add the word "either" to my post to point out that both the Chrono Trigger and the Mega Man series are in decline. Before his matches with the Mario Bros., Zero always looked to be consistently stronger than Knuckles. I don't know how he all of a sudden wouldn't come close to Knuckles while you still hold Magus at that level.

I'm skeptical on if Zero just has bad luck against Mario characters or so. I mean, his match with Mega Man didn't look as suspicious as Mario/Luigi were.

Zero's matches against Mario and Luigi can be perfectly legitimate and still leave him competitive with Magus. If any potential Magus overrating/dropping wouldn't be enough, anything potentially anomalous like Luigi possibly underperforming against Sonic would be.

I expect Ike to get in with a ridiculously inflated seed, but meh. Hopefully he'll get matched up against Gordon Freeman or something to make it at least interesting, but I don't need to see him bomb before SSBB is actually out

The Ike push isn't surprising, I mean, Brawl + MGS4 pushed Snake from a good bit under Sonic/MegaMan/Crono to well, running wild until Smaus, where he put up a slightly higher number than he did against Mario the year before.

Please don't put Ike in SSBB in the same universe as the announcement of Snake.

I'd expect Ike to be a bit weaker than Captain Falcon showed to be. He's not nearly as well known, but now that the Brawl fanbase has their hands on him...

I wouldn't even compare the two. Snake is an entirely different beast from Ike. Everyone loved him beforehand; the Brawl announced coupled with the gun-in-mouth just got everyone in a frenzy. Ike's like ... "who?"

And note that this Ike thing isn't an E3 trailer shown to the entire gaming community. It's a mere update on a website dedicated to SSBB. Not nearly the same.

Speaking of SSB characters, I haven't seen much support for Peach either so far. Considering she only got her high seed thanks to a big board push and the female bracket, I could see her missing out - which would be a shame, what with her having the most exciting match of the contest last year and the fact that we don't have a good read on her.

I'm not comparing him to Snake. I'm comparing him to the situation. The amount of people who even know that Ike is in the game is going to be much smaller than people aware that Snake is in the game. The delivery medium alone dictates that.

I was pretty confident in Dante > Knuckles until he disappointed against Yoshi (sure I had him winning at first, but that's not the point !!). Still, considering Yoshi had the pic advantage along with DMC4 hype... sure, gimme Dante > Knux.

There isn't any connection between the two. You can get excited for Snake in Brawl regardless of whether or not you're a Nintendo or SSB fan. It takes some hardcore loving to get pumped about Ike of all characters.

mnm made a great point on the way in which both were unveiled, too. Let's just say there's a smidge difference.

Right now, I'd take Dante over Zero. Their popularity has flip-flopped recently. Dante is currently among the it-games right now. Capcom is doing nothing for Zero. Sega is at least keeping the Sonic series on the map although Knuckles himself shouldn't benefit from it as much as Sonic and Shadow do, since all the focus is on those two.

Right now I'd put it as Dante > Zero => Knuckles > Magus. I'd put Zero and Knuckles at around the same relative strength right now, but I'd take Zero in a direct match. I think his fanbase would support him a bit more than the Sonic fanbase would support Knuckles. Thank Sega for putting Knuckles in the backseat.

I think you're underestimating Knuckles, personally.. look at how nice Sonic looked in 2k6. look how well Knuckles did vs. Squall. heck, 2k5 stats say Knuckles and Dante are dead even.
