I would imagine a few people might jump on board that one, but I'd play it safe and go with Sephiroth. I can imagine it being closer than initially expected, but I can't see Sephiroth losing that one, even with Galaxy.

If SMG came out THE day of Mario/Sephiroth #3...I'd take it merely out of respect to both Mario/Cloud in 2k2 and the Mario/Crono or Mega Man/Solid Snake feuds.

Don't remind me about Solid/Knuckles.

okay, here's some speculation. assuming this thing starts September 1:

- Samus boost
- Master Chief boost
- Galaxy *just* misses the last day of the contest, assuming he stretches it out like last year
- no Brawl
- Leon boost?
- Bowser/Luigi boost, perhaps, from Super Paper Mario
- maybe a Sonic boost

so basically, not much has happened. oh, Twilight Princess happened, too. but I think a lot of that had already kicked in from the massive hype and such.

Well, that's nice to get some confirmation on it happening. I liked the bit about the games contest, and it makes sense. Hopefully we get that next year, because every big game will have been out by then, the most important clearly being MGS4 in early 08!

Every big game will never be out. By the time the ones we're waiting for come out, new big games will have been announced.

I'm confused and annoyed that Ceej somehow thinks another character battle will be more interesting than a game contest. I was really hoping we could take a year off from character battles so that things would be a little fresher in 2008.

I'm the biggest Game Contest proponent we have.. and I don't mind waiting. games are always coming out, but after Brawl and MGS4, there's really nothing *huge* on the horizon. next summer would be a great time for me.

this summer would also be a good time, of course. but next summer is just a little bit better.

thing is, the character battle is a tradition. an easily predicted tradition, but when you don't do it, we start doing silly things like posting "WE WANT THE DAMN BRACKET" and mis-using the feedback forms and having cybersex with dragons(whoops, that was last year, we did have a contest then <_<)

eh, when you're struggling to make the thing fresh by adding in random gimmicks, you know it's time to take a break. I like the idea of taking a year off from a character battle -- provided we get a game contest instead.

The main difference is that anything announced at this point, or any time afterward, probably wouldn't come out for a couple of years. I'd rather wait a year and have every big name game from every big name series come out. Between now and March, Halo 3, Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and Metal Gear Solid 4 will be out. I can definitely wait.

I wholeheartedly agree. And I know most people seem to be pleased that we're getting the character battle starting September 1st, but this marks (I think) at least the second year in a row where we're not having a proper summer contest. It's obviously better to have a contest than not, but summer obviously has several advantages over the rest of the year: no schoolwork, more free time, etc. I'm glad we're getting something, but, geez, did we really need to have another contest starting near the fall?

Eh, Starcraft 2 will be on the horizon then, and after that we're getting into FF XIII territory... there's basically always going to be something fairly big coming out in the next 6 months.

I'm willing to wait for a game contest, I guess what bothers me more is that we're not taking a break from the character contest. I think I might rather have no contest this year than drive the character contest even further into the ground. That's part of why I was hoping we could have a game contest, and come back with a character contest next year with no gimmicks.

aww jeeze... the first day i finally lose pretty much all hope of ever having a contest again anytime in the near future, ceej comes out and posts a topic! well it's definitely awesome to hear he hasn't completely forgotten about us or that he's just ignoring us.

Really disappointed that we're not getting a games contest because he doesn't think people change they're stances on VG's as much, then goes on to say he's adding in some weird gimmicky aspect to the character battle (again... sigh), to spice things up. Last time that happened it only made the contest worse. All the while he could run a games contest completely pure, with no divisional boundaries, and just let the nominations sort themselves out, and we'd probably have a more unpredictable contest.

not to be a complete downer though, im really happy he posted that topic, even if it wasn't everything I wanted to hear (thank god the quotes contest was scraped), i just wish he was more in touch with us and what has better potential as far as contests go. too bad leon just left so recently too, announcement might have made him stick around a little longer.

either way, we best be getting a games contest next year, or im crying.

Eh, Starcraft 2 will be on the horizon then, and after that we're getting into FF XIII territory... there's basically always going to be something fairly big coming out in the next 6 months.

I'm not even sure if FF13 can make an impact, given that for the first time a FF title is not going to be on a dominant console. but regardless, look at this year's e3 - there's a reason most people found it underwhelming. there's not a lot on the horizon once the big titles come out this year.

I agreed with this for a while.. but now I'm just bored and would enjoy a character battle. I'm really scared about him trying something new, though. the battle royale worked out, but you can only push the envelope so far.

It's probably justified to be a bit skeptical of the new twist he has. I'm all for something new, so long as it's done right (ie, taking Link, Sephiroth, and Cloud out of the main bracket), but last year's female half was awful. Hopefully he stays away from things like that.

I think the best idea is a tried-but-true one

Link
runner-up

Mario
Snake

Samus
Sephiroth

Cloud
winner

or, if you want to make it unpredictable

Link
Cloud

Sephiroth
Mario

Samus
bracket winner

Snake
bracket runner up

Snake and Samus?

I'd hope he wouldn't go about removing those two from the main bracket, especially Snake; he's the best character to watch in matches these days, I think.

us old folk don't have things like summer vacation anymore. :)

A thought I don't want to contemplate until the time requires, but, last year when the contest was running the beginning of freshman year, updating Spread Betting amidst trying to study...wasn't fun.

I wish he had been a little more descriptive in terms of why we had to wait so long, instead of basically chiding us for "pestering" him. It's not like the Quotes contest was a good idea up until last week and then suddenly became stupid. You'd think that since the contests generate so much increased traffic, there'd be more people/time/resources behind seeing them run consistently.

Am I the only one who thinks having another Character Contest during the school year is a bad idea? The constant vote shifts were cool at first, but I thought after a while they became dull and predictable. Vote shifts might not be so common and back and forth in the summer, but it's much more unpredictable as to when they'll start and how long they'll last unlike in the fall where you can predict when a character's momentum will shift down to the hour.
