Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 442

I wouldn't be so sure Doma; FE's fans seem pretty sturdy and Pokemon's fans strike me as being shaky. Not to discredit the series against Metroid or to say it isn't alot of people's favorite handheld-RPG series (or even series in general), but I just don't think FE would roll over against Pokemon here.

Pokemon would definitely win head-to-head and should win a handheld-RPG poll, but FE would hold its ground, methinks.

Ha, I thought about Goldeneye, but its second game was made EA instead of Rare (I think that's right), so it'd be hard to cound that as a real series.

I'd like to see how Perfect Dark fared in such a poll though!

Unreal or Quake would win an FPS poll, with Halo doing respectably if Goldeneye isn't in it.

Unreal would do alright, but with Half-Life/Doom/Quake in the mix I wouldn't think it would have room to be on top of even those three, much less over everybody else too.

Question: if Metroid Prime was (erroneously) put into the FPS-poll, would it be a guaranteed win for it?

I would expect that Halo would be the favorite to win the FPS-poll. It may not be the most respected FPS, but I definitely would say that it's among the most popular. And remember that it retains its hardcore strength in a multi-poll. Call of Duty would be up there too though.

I'm not discounting FE's (boo, hiss) fans, but I think that Pokemon's fans are more stable than before, especially with D/P's recent release. Maybe it wouldn't be a throttling, but I honestly think that Pokemon would at least double up the next nearest competitor.

Question: if Metroid Prime was (erroneously) put into the FPS-poll, would it be a guaranteed win for it?

Guaranteed? No. It would depend on how many other console-centric FPSes got in, as well as the other games. A FPS poll would by necessity snub quite a few valid entries, given the sheer volume of series on the PC. System Shock, Half-Life, Marathon, Dark Forces... four other titles that could do some damage in a poll (well, maybe not Marathon).

MP or Halo would be the favourite if it got in, though.

I've not even heard of Marathon or Dark Forces before, ha, so I wouldn't imagine either of those being able to hang with the likes of Halo or Half-Life. As for System Shock, here's a fun-fact: System Shock 2 was on the Top 10 List's drop-down box (which had 130 games) yet didn't even make it into the Top 100 List. Halo 2 and Tales of Symphonia had more write-in votes than SS2 had easy-access votes...

...I don't like its chances either on doing good in such a poll.

Marathon is Mac-centric, and you might know Dark Forces better from the other sub-title it picked up: Jedi Knight.

Forgot about SS2 being on the top 100 drop-down. *shrug* I'm just trying to throw out some names. Got some of my old PC Gamers beside me (which is funny, because I'm very heavily console-oriented in my gaming).

Call me old-fashioned, but I have to go with Day 1 of non-topicality for the best board day.

Wolfenstein? Yeah, it got some 3D games (Wolfenstein 3D was an id title, and it predates Doom), but the sequels were a different developer, like Goldeneye (I think Activision got some third party to do it). Can't say much about it, though - I only played a SNES port of the original and the Doom 2 secret levels.

HaRRicH | Posted 6/24/2007 6:46:28 PM | message detail
True, but at least one of the developers (and I think both of them) made two or more games for the series when they had the license...that would still technically count as a series, and there's no easy way to separate the two without simply placing the company name beside the title in the poll.

Eh, I would say that constitutes as a series. Bond is a movie license, so that's a different boat. That would be like considering all the X-men games as part of the same series. But change of developer doesn't automatically mean its a different series. Call of Duty: Big Red One and Call of Duty 3 are made by a different developer. So is Tomb Raider Legend and Tomb Raider Anniversary. They are still the same series though. But then again, with Bond, EA is an entirely new publisher. The other examples I just gave stayed under the same publisher, right?

Unreal/Quake, contending for a FPS poll? Are you guys nuts? A Best FPS Series poll would go like

Halo (by a wide margin)
Half-Life
Doom
Call of Duty
Quake
Unreal
Medal of Honor
Rainbox Six

Combine GE and PD into a series and it finishes just in front of Halo. Include Prime as an FPS and it finishes a little ways behind Halo.

Oh man, forgot about Rainbow 6...fun game.

I don't think there would really be anybody actually IN contention for the top spot outside of Halo, Half-Life, and Doom...but others like Quake/Unreal/Call of Duty/Duke Nukem/Rainbow 6/whatever else would keep it to being a pretty well-rounded poll for the most part. Halo would be the favorite, but by no means do I think it would be by a large margin (if it won)...though I'll say this: the more options in the poll, the better that Halo will perform.

It's weird though; Halo's the most likely favorite of console games and Half-Life is the most likely favorite of PC games, yet they've also seemingly got pretty dedicated-but-small groups. HL doesn't get hate like Halo does, but a poll like this would hardly involve hate anyway...then Doom has always been a classic FPS-name and has had big success on both PC and console. It's had appreciated games that sold from the 16-bit days to last generation too. It's also got more games than Halo and Half-Life (maybe even combined) and Doom still did well in the Top 100 List.

It just feels like it's going to be a very divided clash for the top three spots between them, and I think the others are liked enough to not get decimated. It could wind up being a well-rounded poll.

I wouldn't expect any other FPS-series to outdo Halo's position in the x-stats in last year's Series Contest and it being a multi-choice poll can only help Halo here, but I don't see why Half-Life or Doom can't be within striking distance of Halo. Half-Life is the Halo of the PC without the hate while Doom is like a watered-down best-of-both-worlds (see the paradox?) combo of those two. Doom and Half-Life both also have more games in their series and have spanned more systems than Halo, not to mention both have been around longer too. It'd be interesting to see what those three could do to each other, not to mention having the other series in as well.

Like I've said, Halo's bound to be the favorite...but it's upset-capable. Hell, since MC's barn-burner with Donkey Kong in 2k5, anything Halo-related has been 0-4 and last year we were just one match away (LoZ/FF) from seeing two Halo-related contestants be Ultimate Losers in the same year (just fun-facts, not arguing points)!

MP > MP2 and Halo 2 > Halo 1 makes it interesting to look at in MP's favor, but I don't like to think that LoZ:WW should have beaten StarCraft THAT badly without (more than typical) rallying, especially considering Halo should have beat StarCraft without (more than typical) rallying too. Anyway, that's gettin' statistically-sketchy for two games which we've only seen three matches total over three years ago so we can make an indirect comparison with their sequels in a multi-option poll...

...can I get back to using the Top 100 List from a year and a half ago to compare three series -- two we've never seen perform in a contest and the other only once -- to see how they would do in a multi-option poll, just so we can skip the sequel talk? That **** is complicated and unreliable.....

Ahem.

I just want to point out that the Series Contest predicted Elder Scrolls would beat Diablo with 57.83%, yet today's poll shows otherwise. It wasn't even all that unexpected, either...

...anybody wanna think that Diablo just really got ****ed over by having to face FF head-to-head whereas TES was through SF and RE before FF struck? Diablo may have been unfairly treated in the Series Contest.

More probable is that the Series Contest stats are nearly as borked as the characters'. <_< 2006 wasn't the greatest year for reliability I'm afraid...

I wouldn't depend on the Series Contest stats to predict a thing. The probability for SFF in any match increased due to the fact that you're dealing with an entire series, not just one game or one character.

Oh, and there's the fact that Mario, Zelda, or Final Fantasy would SFF nearly anything as it is, being so popular.
