Zelda vs. SMB -or- Zelda vs. SSB would be interesting to see. X-stats
predict SSB gets 35.06% on Zelda, nearly 9%. There's no way SSB would
beat Metal Gear with 62.56%, but I think SSB getting 35.77% on FF seems
pretty reasonable. --- "Ah, a party! We haven't had one of those. It could be fun! So...what is a party?" "Well, you drink punch and eat CAKE! ...I think." |

From: Haste2 | Posted: 7/15/2005 Now, Ness/CJ...now that match deserves more attention. Ness could be as strong as 24% against Link. CJ hasn't even been measured yet. He can't be directly compared to Vercetti...he's a completely different style of character, being a gangster or whatever. Also, from what I could tell (and more than just that Gamespot poll), Vercetti is more liked than CJ, even if CJ might be the one who . Also, I say there's a small chance Ness has gotten more popular... according to PotDs over a year ago, Squaresoft had about 50% more votes than Nintendo had, but according to a poll in April Nintendo was ahead of Square by a bit. Now, maybe it could be more of Squaresoft decreasing, or maybe it perhaps it means nothing at all. In any case, if RPGuy's extrapolated standings for Sp2K5 are accurate it's a sign of Nintendo characters in general getting more popular. I was the first in the topic to mention the good possibility of an across-the-board Nintendo boost, and the first to point out the notable company PotDs. Funny how so many people mentioned Bowser and Ganondorf increasing, and even Zelda, yet that's it... --- "Ah, a party! We haven't had one of those. It could be fun! So...what is a party?" Time for some weird psychology... Does anybody else have theme songs for certain contest matches (in other words, whenever you think of the match, that music always pops in your head) to this very day? I'll list the few that I remember. 1)Squall vs. Luigi: FF8 battle theme; 2)Mega Man vs. Axel: The 13th Struggle (Axel's Battle theme in KH2); 3)Sora vs. Tingle/Mega Man: The Corrupted (a boss theme in KH2). That's about it, I think. The only song I really like out of those is The 13th Struggle, so bias toward songs really isn't much of a factor. I've only played through FF8 and KH2 one time, too. But, they are indeed battle themes, so there might be a bit a bit of a bias towards battle themes. In fact, if it wasn't for Mega Man vs. Axel in the last character contest, The 13th Struggle wouldn't be stuck in my head so darn much (I even had to listen to the song a bunch of times to ensure I don't have a memory-fuzzied song playing in my head). --- "Ah, a party! You know, if the Spring 2005 Contest never existed, SC2K5 would've been
even more of a trainwreck in the early rounds than it already was.
Lloyd/Wesker probably would've been an extremely debatable match. I
wonder what the expectations on Ocelot vs. Pac-Man would've been, too?
Kratos vs. Diablo certainly would've been more debatable, too. Plus,
Bower/Ryu would've been more of a toss-up, and same with the winner of
that against Tidus... and Auron/Ganondorf would've been more debatable.
Also, Yoshi/Ocelot would've wrecked a lot more brackets on Board 8. Darn Villains Contest shoulda never existed. =P (then again, the bracket would've been different due to the VC's influence on nominations, but let's pretend it has no effect) Slowflake won the Lloyd/Wesker analysis due calling him "Weaker" by accident. --- "Ah, a party! I dunno, I remember people saying Wesker very well could beat Kefka and
that Lloyd would have been around KOS-MOS's level...and at the time,
those were fairly close. Throw in upset hunters and that we knew
Lloyd's 2-seed was largely a product of the NRT... ...also, the prediction-percentage was 53.88% in Lloyd's favor despite it being a 2/7-match, and that's enough to sell me on Wesker > Lloyd being rather viable without the Villain Contest. --- This is my main account, but I see all the cool people doing it...... Oh, and I still wish Magus would have made the Villain Contest...but
only if he took Lavos' spot. We wouldn't have been able to get anything
from his match against Mother Brain, he would have beaten Liquid better
than 2k4 stats predicted thanks to Frog, then he gets "SFF'd" by
Sephiroth like he was by Crono, again screwing him over on showing his
"TRUE" strength... ...then let Magus/Knuckles happen. --- This is my main account, but I see all the cool people doing it...... HaRRicH |

despite it being a 2/7-match, and that's enough to sell me on Wesker
> Lloyd being rather viable without the Villain Contest. Perhaps a little, but I think people who saw that may have noticed how
much worse Wesker did than Mithos too, another ToS character...so I
think that would have only mattered so much. Some, yeah, I'll give you
that, but NOTHING like other characters we saw. --- This is my main account, but I see all the cool people doing it...... HaRRicH |
LeonhartForever | Posted 5/11/2007 2:24:40 PM | message detail |
Yeah, it didn't matter AS much, that's why Wesker wasn't the favorite
to win, but the simple fact that he won a match at all stuck in the
bracket pickers' minds more than anything else. Oh, and does anyone think MGS4's strong showing today indicate that perhaps Snake's boost last year was not perhaps due to SSBB as much as we thought? Or perhaps it got people interested in MGS as a result of the trailer. Who knows? Either way, MGS beats FFT easily now. Bank on it! --- "I'm only here to see how the story plays out. Hm, I don't get it... GTA4 pulls a pretty respectable 15.79% in the PS3
poll, given how it was up against big names like MGS4, FF13 and DMC4.
Then we take the identical game and put it in a much, much weaker 360
field and it balloons to... 14.52%? Either Halo 3 has become an
absolute beast for some reason, or else there must be some kind of
perception that it's not really Grand Theft Auto unless you're playing
it on a Playstation. Must be the latter. And now for giggles, let's hold GTA4 constant between the two polls, even though it makes no sense to do so! If we assume GTA4 PS3 = GTA4 360, then based on these results.... Halo 3 beats Metal Gear Solid 4 with 71.97% of the vote! Halo 3 beats Final Fantasy XIII with 66.34% of the vote! http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=2591 http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=2646 Though I know the newer one has Halo 3 winning a bit bigger than before, it's still Halo compared to FF...I'm gonna be generous and say the hype between those two should be closer to being constant than the GTA4's for the PS3 and 360. I bet if DMC4 was in today's poll, it wouldn't be doing as well as it did yesterday either...I would just assume each system has their loyalties elsewhere than GTA4, though it's still hyped. I don't think GTA4's fallen off the map here -- we saw just before the system launches that GTA:SA is still a loved game here on multi-platforms and such, GTA:VC was one of the top games in the 128-division in 2k4, GTA3 was revolutionary and was only behind FFX for GotY in 2k2 (a year with SSBM, Halo, and MGS2 at that), and I wouldn't think any influx from newer gamers would be against the GTA series either -- even Jack Thompson will tell you kiddies love 'em. Once GTA4 gets an official name (and have we even seen screenshots for it yet?), it'll pick up some more steam...as is though, all we have is an announcement to my knowledge. --- Damn, most of my dates involve mocking and/or beating up people like you and your bride-to-be, so I really have no advice --Horatio |
