Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 439

Villain Contest Factor. Though Virtual Console Factor might also come in for the next character contest, so one will have to change the name.

He's saying that Zelda overperformed on Samus for the same reason Bowser and Ganon did on Sephiroth in the Villains Contest. I figure something happened there or in Snake/Samus because I don't buy Zelda being stronger than the entire male bracket sans Snake.

Oh, and I definitely don't think Snake/Zelda 2006 would have been a closer match than Snake/Zelda 2005 was, so I don't think she gained more than he did. Ganon showed no signs of a massive gain.

I'd go with that. Though in fairness, her demolition job of Aeris was pretty impressive.

CRAZY THEORY: Maybe more female voters came to the site due to increased DS ownership and voted for the more feminine character! HAH!

Sure, beating down Aeris like that was impressive, but I think that's more the flower girl's weakness than Zelda's strength since she could barely do better against Yuna.

*looks at Samus's 12% prediction percentage to win the contest, 41% to win the female side*

yeah.. can't say I agree with the idea of antivoting due to being the favourite.

yeah.. can't say I agree with the idea of antivoting due to being the favourite.

Those 41% were probably SURE she would win, though. You get the other 59% who didn't know of Samus' strength, but anybody who even saw one of these contests would probably figure that Samus would take the win.

I certainly think that she at least saw a watered-down version of what Sephiroth got. The rest can be explained through all sorts of the usual diabolical explanations, like ZSS, boosting, rSFF etc

...So when did the Series Contest start last year anyway?

It was called the July 2006 Contest, so I think July 1st.

HaRRicH: about the Zelda/Ganondorf comparison on Samus... keep in mind that they faced Samus in too different years. Everything Zelda in general was a bit stronger in '06 than in '05, and Samus being a little weaker in '06 isn't out of the question.

However, I'm thinking that either Samus weakened a bit or Zelda/Samus had some sort of rSFF, since the strongest Samus we know I think could do better than 61% on Yuna, which is what Ganondorf managed on her the previous year. Anyway, there are two reasons I can think of why Zelda could've benefited from SFF than Ganondorf: one, Samus/Zelda was a female/female match, and two, Zelda is the namesake of her series, so she may be a bit better with dealing with SFF than Ganondorf for whatever reason (though it doesn't make any sense to me).

Also, who's to say where Tifa really is? She DID have FF:AC and KH2 behind her going into the contest last year as well as whatever influx FF12 and DoC:FF7 brought in.....
Vincent went from 45% on Crono to 49% on him, and he was the star... but I suppose you have a point of the FF12 influx, but I kinda doubt it existed (noticing most matches outside Tifa/Samus still make sense, and Aeris and Rikku didn't do too hot after FF12's release). I just can't see Tifa being as strong as Vincent, so I think it's optimistic to say Tifa's around 37% on BL, slightly above Ganondorf. Don't forget she only received 66% of the vote on Peach.

LeonhartForever | Posted 4/24/2007 8:04:51 AM | message detail
Only 66%, heh. Still, if you assume that Jill was still equal to Hayabusa in 2005, it does put Tifa in the 36-37% range, though I don't mind thinking she's a little stronger due to how big RE4 was (Yes, I know she wasn't in it). Either way, I think it's funny that she ended up nearly equal to Luigi in the unadjusted stats like she was in 2003.

Part of Vincent's gain on Crono could be in part to him getting weaker, since his day vote all of a sudden went from below average to abysmal like the rest of Chrono Trigger.

Points taken, I just think that's a big jump; Zelda outdoing Ganon by 4% against Samus is no joke when we also saw Vincent beat Ganon by less than 4%. It's also hard to imagine Samus being much weaker, although we never had anything too good to read her with last year (nor much in 2k5).

However, I'm thinking that either Samus weakened a bit or Zelda/Samus had some sort of rSFF, since the strongest Samus we know I think could do better than 61% on Yuna, which is what Ganondorf managed on her the previous year. To be fair, Yuna certainly stepped it up this past year...a lot. She beat Joanna Dark after her 360-launch game nearly as bad as Mario did, and she nearly matched Aeris against Zelda too.

I don't know why it being a female/female match matters, unless you're thinking of Samus/Lara when you say that...and look who benefited in that match, ha. Other matches in the female bracket went as expected, like Terra/Kerrigan, so I don't wanna cast blame there...and for the namesake, let me ask this: how much better do you feel like Zelda would do against Link than Ganon did (or would again)?

I feel like Zelda handles SFF better because of her often-used "kickassory" in SSBM, not to mention she is in LoZ and is even the namesake of it. I'm more of a fan of her being playable and loved in the #5-#7 game on the site being her SFF-deterrent than her name being in the title of the #1 series on the site...and I still like to think Luigi >= Bowser > Kirby helps support that notion.

To be fair to Crono's day vote...he faced two Nintendo characters in SSB/M, a much newer Square character who's appeared in KH, and Sonic. His day-vote SHOULD look worse, ha.

Crono faced Mario for four straight years, and his day vote never looked worse than what it did last year. Auron's day vote was nothing special against Sub-Zero, though he did look good against Alucard in the day (but to be fair, nearly everyone does). Honestly, it seemed like every day vote was a repeat of what the Chief did to him last year. He never got torn apart that badly before that match.

And just for some number-crunching because I'm bored... in 2004 Crono had 54.5% on Mario after the first hour. He ended with 53.24%. That's a whopping... barely more than a percent (no I do not use that weird and accurate system that effectively doubles the percent numbers in explaining the differences <.<), and he held the plumber to a grand total of three five-minute updates over the course of the day.

Come 2005, Crono had 48.27% on Mario at the first hour. He ended with a mighty 46.15% against his archrival, so that's a drop of a lil' more than two percent. Seeing a bit of disparity, though given Mario's power in 2k5 one might speculate much of that was a stronger day vote rather than a uniform increase across the board (which makes sense, Cloud actually did better at night against Link in 2k5 than he did in 2k4).

He didn't face Mario in 2006... but he *did* face Bowser, and looking at his high point (rather than after the first hour, thanks new starting time!) of 62.05%, and his end of 57.44%, that's a downward spiral of 4.5%. Against Bowser.

Call me crazy, but I think 2k4 Crono coulda done better.

All true, I'm not saying it can't be a sign of Crono being weaker, but I just don't think it's AS bad as it looks offhand. Still though, I'll pursue this argument a bit longer for the sake of devil's advocate:

Yes, Crono lost more ground against Bowser in the day-time than he did against Mario...but also remember that Bowser gained 1.19% against Mario in 2k4 between the first hour and the end of their match. Bowser also outdid Mario in the same fashion in 2k5 against Solid Snake (2.76% to 4.64%)...

...but nobody's allowed to use the Sephiroth-comparison between the two. Nobody.

Sir Crono | Posted 4/24/2007 3:08:31 PM | message detail
The problem is...Bowser doesn't generally have a good day vote. That's what makes Crono's match against him look so bad. Bowser's match against Mario doesn't really mean much to me since it's an SFF situation. But if you want to talk about comparing day vote swings between Mario characters, look at what Luigi did to Kirby compared to what Bowser did. Bowser lost 2.47% against Kirby after the midway point of the match, while Luigi lost less than a percent, and unlike Bowser, actually kept building his lead.

Bowser actually lost ground against Sigma, and he did absolutely nothing against the usually pitiful RE day vote against Leon Kennedy.
---
As you wish.
HaRRicH | Posted 4/24/2007 7:44:41 PM | message detail
I didn't think that's the case -- I always thought it was more of Bowser losing the night-vote to literally every character he ever faced until this past year (and I'm not double-checking to make sure).

Save for a port or Virtual Console release, at least.

Speaking of CT, I saw it earlier today on a rom site's Top 100 List (who else, right?) on which games get downloaded the most for each system...and CT was #5 on the list for the SNES. For kicks, I'l gonna list this site's Top Ten for most downloaded for afew systems (I don't see any systems newer than the Saturn here) since I saw afew interesting things. For the lists, FYI, I'm not counting the Japanese versions of games...that doesn't change much though:

NES:
1. Mega Man (had 8,413 downloads)
2. Mega Man 6
3. Mega Man 2
4. Mega Man 5
5. Metal Gear
6. Excite Bike
7. River City Ransom
8. Mega Man 4
9. Mega Man 3
10. Ninja Gaiden 2 (5,262 downloads)
Notably missing from the top 100: SUPER MARIO BROS. 1/2/3

SNES: (not counting the "games" of manga)
1. Mega Man X3 (22,491 downloads)
2. Star Ocean
3. Chrono Trigger
4. Castlevania - Dracula X
5. Street Fighter Alpha 2
6. Mega Man X 2
7. Mega Man X
8. Earthbound
9. Contra 3
10. Marvel Super Heroes - War of the Gems (12,925)
Notably missing from the top 100: SUPER MARIO WORLD/ALL-STARS/YOSHI'S ISLAND

GENESIS:
1. Streets of Rage 2 (19,133)
2. Contra: Hard Corps
3. Streets of Rage 3
4. Castlevania - Bloodlines
5. Gunstar Heroes
6. Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles - The Hyperstone Heist
7. Sonic and Knuckles & Sonic 3
8. Shining Force
9. Golden Axe 3
10. Samurai Shodown (9,048)
Noticably missing from the top 100: SONIC 1/2 (though Sonic 1/2 mixed with S&K are both on)

GAME BOY COLOR:
1. Mega Man Xtreme 2 (6,285)
2. Dragon Ball Z - Legendary Super Warriors
3. Dragon Warrior Monsters
...
Pocket Monsters - Crystal Version (is this Japanese for Pokemon Crystal?)
...
4. Dragon Warrior III
5. Mega Man Xtreme
6. Harvest Moon 3 GBC
7. Castlevania - Legends
8. Adventure Island
9. Metal Slug
10. Dragon Warrior Monsters 2 - Cobi's Journey (2,764)
Notably missing from the top 100: MARIO MARIO WHERE THE **** ARE YOU WHY'RE YOU OFF THESE?!?

Well, considering how we always assumed Mega Man was heavily considered Nintendo, this might be more proof of it; on all three Nintendo systems, a Mega Man game is #1 on the most downloaded and look at how often you see Mega Man (or even Capcom games in general) through the lists...but if this is consistent through-out all rom-sites, then maybe Mega Man is more similar to Crono in the rom-regard than we once thought.

Also, Mario does not have a single game of his in the Top 100 List of ANY of the lists. In fact, though I'm not rechecking, I don't remember seeing any LoZ or Metroid games either. Perhaps people would rather play new games on computers than classics they grew up with?

I dunno, it's late and I need sleep, but maybe you guys'll like that info and make with it what you will.

More than anything else, those lists seem to confirm the idea that emulation mostly helps games that weren't mega-popular to start with. S3&K was the worst selling Sonic game on the Genesis, MMX3 is the rarest MMX game, etc.

No Super Metroid is kinda weird though, considering its relatively low sales.
