Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 439

All 1500. I'm one of the 838 people who took poll #1. Really. 6.95% 5154

I remember that poll.

Yeah, I remember that well...and I doubt we had 100 of the original voters vote for that, much less 100 who voted in every one of them.

Did anybody see the swing in today's poll? In the first hour of it, AIM had something like 37% to MSN's 27%...but now, dayum, the tides have almost been reversed and there's still plenty of day-light to go...

...and I'm calling it now: I blame it on Easter.

Yeah, was about to say the same thing. StarCraft has nothing on this MSN comeback... I got my vote in early last night and AIM was cruising along at 41%, 10 hours later MSN is the one with the 37 to 28 advantage.

Not that I didn't realize how easily MSN dominates Europe and Australia, I just thought our North American AIM support would overwhelm the other continents. Though I guess there's still plenty of time for a comeback...

I just checked myself...not only has AIM beaten MSN everytime, the only time it lost was to ICQ...and that was when AIM was split up into two options. Now though, if AIM doesn't get its act together, MSN's going to storm away with this. Here's the most recent poll similar to this I found:

Poll 1832 (11/27/2004)
What instant messenger system do you most often use?

25965 46.33% AIM
1084 1.93% ICQ
109 0.19% Jabber
18474 32.96% MSN
3297 5.88% Yahoo!
7116 12.7% I don't use IM

TOTAL VOTES: 56045

Much as I like my AIM, I tend to forget that I'm techy enough to be using a two year old modified version of a three year old version of the program. So at first I can't understand why AIM has constantly been losing ground in recent years, and then I remember what the current build looks like. *shudders* Yeah, if I were just getting into the IM scene tonight, I very much doubt I'd select that Triton crap over MSN's cleaner interface.

To be fair though, I think AIM would have had a decent shot at the win today if this weren't Easter... I can imagine plenty of Americans traveling around with the family today and not getting a chance to pick up a game or get online.

But to me, the real sea change from 2 years ago is that overall IM attendance has declined a good 6%. What the devil? I always saw instant messaging as the way of the future when it came to online communication, and just assumed that with the younger generations it would be as natural a part of being online as browsers are for us. Seems that with the rise of social networking, there's no need to IM your friend when you don't need any special software to post a note to the facebook/myspace/e-mail accounts he checks twice an hour. Or else, I guess it could just be that 100% of teenagers have their own cell phone on them at all times, all of which can use text messaging.

CJay needs to have a poll asking what is everybody's favorite way of electronic communication. There are messenger-programs, e-mail accounts, unlimited texting, public forums, profile sites, and probably more I'm forgetting about.

This poll, however, should only happen after THE DAMN CONTEST.

I expect that cell phones have replaced IM for a lot of people... more so than websites (facebook/myspace). But maybe not.

I actually use Google Talk the most (as do most of my RL friends that use IMing) as it's built right into g-mail but it looks like in the grand scheme of things I'm in the vast minority on that. :(

Still, I never would have anticipated MSN besting AIM in the poll, especially after I saw the votes last night. I don't think any of my friends use it, which may be why I'm so surprised.

Yes, this Sony result is mighty sad. But if I were an anti-Nintendo/anti-Zelda fellow, what I'd find even more disturbing would be yesterday's result. That was the one where, on a weekday, a poll revolving entirely around Final Fantasy VII (and featuring 'Square' in the title) could only manage 83,667 votes. 83k! Come on now, that's only 3000 more users than were reeled in by Contra 4 days back, and is well below the interest level we saw for Japan or IM programs or the other last few polls.

It's interesting and worth pointing out...but it's not making me more confident in FF7 losing strength here, either. I figure that, at best, it's a small sign that LoZ would do better against FF7 in a rematch, but I like to think we have more telling signs than that already.

Oh, am I? Am I really? Because I seem to remember that there was a time when anything, and I mean ANYTHING FF7 sent this site into a fanboy frenzy, and that it was consistently reflected in the polls. Let's test my memory, shall we?

November 2005, the site's Top Ten games are revealed, each with a small writeup and accompanied by 10 day-long polls, all run back to back. Should give us an excellent idea of if seeing "Final Fantasy VII" in a PotD title used to result in huge voter interest, eh? Results!

FF3/6 - 67,428
Halo - 60,833
MGS - 64,883
Goldeneye - 73,866
Melee - 70,432
Mario 3 - 79,710
Link to the Past - 69,021
Chrono Trigger - 68,796
Ocarina - 72,740
FF7 - 81,770

Now answer me this. Insert that identical Contra poll into this scheme a few days ahead of FF7, say in LttP's place. Does it attract 78,653 voters? OR, in comparison to every other game we've seen, is Final Fantasy VII just no longer on a whole different playing field when it comes to capturing the interest of GameFAQs?

Again, worth pointing out, and seeing your last post is a nice compliment to it. I just think that there are more telling signs already out. I'm not saying to ignore this seemingly-trivial piece of potential evidence, but it seems rather minimal despite the case you bring up because vote totals is a sketchy thing to judge by...

...it's another brick in the LoZ:OoT > FF7 upset wall, sure, but it's a rather small and broken brick.

I feel like that in regards to a LoZ:TP/LoZ:LttP match, which is still being generous. LoZ:TP is huge, certainly, but it's only been out for about five months! No doubt it's going to be strong, but the fact that practically all of us are in agreement that it is NOW in the Super Seven is already hyping the game's strength to a bizarre new dimension, and I cannot imagine any other way to overhype the game's strength than to be saying LoZ:TP > FF7 is a real possibility.

It'll keep getting stronger as the Wii sales go on, especially since LoZ:TP is a launch game with a well-respected brand name and beloved fanfare; hell, if TP is really better than OoT, then TP > FF7 could happen once the Wii is more established. As is though -- and for quite awhile longer -- it's not, and I hope nobody's forgetting just how popular and loved a game OoT is already.

CT being re-released and Magus having his own multi-platform spin-off right after 2k4 wouldn't have caused so much overestimation as this LoZ:TP talk is causing.

Didn't update the list with that Contra result from the other day, but went back and did it now. Came out to a pretty impressive 56.70%, good for 15th all-time. It's of course way behind Mario 1/3 and Zelda 1 when talking NES titles, but is right in line with the original Final Fantasy (58.50%), which I think is nothing to sneeze at. Full update at

http://board8wiki.com/Have you played

While I was there I went ahead and applied the update for these latest Got Console numbers from yesterday. That's all ready to run at

http://board8wiki.com/Got Console

Now for a trend watch!

* The Wii is up to 42.64% ownership, which is an improvement of 0.57% since the last poll in February.

* The 360 scored a 35.79%, which is actually DOWN 0.38% from the poll taken 3 days after Christmas. I'm thinking that was just due to a few more Gears players being on the site to check FAQs... still, 0 growth in 4.5 months is a little strange.

* The PS3 scored a 12.17% this time, an improvement of 1.46% from its previous best ownership way back in November of '06. Seems pretty clear that we can chalk this movement up to the European launch. A very nice gain, but let's not throw the console a party just yet... keep in mind that it's currently still trailing the Virtual Boy by over a full percentage point.

I remember how 2k5 was dubbed the year of the Nintendo Boost, and Mario certainly soared that year...not to mention that Nintendo already had a stranglehold on the handheld industry before the DS. Now, with Nintendo coming from accepting the Gamecube's reputation to fighting hard with the Wii for first in sales, how much better accepted LoZ:TP was accepted than SM64DS both in general terms and how well they performed in their GotY polls, and that there are already more people with a Wii in four months than the DS in seven months...

...I just think this'll mean a lot more than "LINK WINS AGAIN GAWD" -- this year could be incredible for many more Nintendo characters on GameFAQs, LoZ-related or otherwise.
