So I'm all in the God Mode here, so what are all you nuts thinking about Kratos this upcoming year now that God of War II is released to the public and everyone is loving it?

Ultimecia, Gruntilda, Carmen Sandiego, the chick from Battletoads, whatever generic fighting games you want, maybe even Dark Cloud from FF3 and Mother Brain.

This would be one awesome contest, trust me.

It's difficult to gauge Kratos considering the 2006 stats were so messed up. I still think something weird happened in Snake/Sonic, but I don't know how much of an effect it has.

ZFS | Posted 3/16/2007 9:46:20 PM | message detail
Yeah. Looking at those stats turns up some pretty goofy looking things. I can't even recall the general reception to a lot of those later matches. The controversy was that Snake undershot a couple of those matches (Mega Man and Sonic), right?

THEJackSparrow | Posted 3/16/2007 9:56:38 PM | message detail
Well, everyone thought the Mega Man match was fine. It's just that after the terrible contest he had, it's difficult to accept that he's somehow almost equal with Sonic and managed to finish ABOVE Crono.

Plus, the Tifa stuff with Samus messed up the female stats, and the possibility that either Zelda overperformed and/or Snake underperformed against Samus.

In other words, too many factors to consider, and our stats suck as a result.

I think Kratos closes the gap on Dante after GoW2. God of War got a lot more fanfare than DMC and DMC2 combined, and GoW2 is looking to be a monster. Dante might be a bit more likable as a character, but I think GoW's popularity tops Devil May Cry's. Not saying Kratos will be at Dante's level, as Dante has years of contest exposure under his belt, but Kratos is definitely on the same path.

Beatrix wins, by the way.

She's as much a villain as Magus. Not only does she end up on your side, but she ends up screwing lardass Steiner. She's technically not a villain. Brahne is iffy herself. Kuja probably has a great shot at doing well, as long as he doesn't go against the female Crazy Hand.

See how awesome the Female Villain Contest is going to be?

I'd agree with Kratos definitely closing the gap. GoW2 isn't going to be enough to put him up there with Dante, but I don't think he'll end up too far off. I'm not going to bother looking at those stats, but I think Kratos could squeak one out against Ryu, or at least give him one great match, if they faced each other again. GoW2 should do a whole mess of good for him this year. That sucker got one million pre-orders, according to Sony.

Well if Riku can give a strong showing against Yoshi, I don't see why Kratos couldn't either. But anyways, I said that Kratos would close the gap... not that he would be at Dante's level. Give Kratos the same amount of time to saturate that Dante has, and he'd be just as formidable. I mean, looking at their common performances against Ryu, Dante beats Kratos about 53.5-46.5. And that's with Dante being around for over 2 years and 2 games under his belt to Kratos's one. Now with God of War 2 out, I'd definitely say that Kratos is catching up.

I'm gonna rally to get a Mii in since if one did make it, it would be interesting to see where a Mii would stand in the stats.

AKI Man, Awesome Possum, Klaymen, and probably even an SFF'd Waluigi would beat a Mii.

Okay, that might be a little rough, but...I certainly wouldn't expect much from a Mii.
---
The Office > you.
Ngamer64 | Posted 3/19/2007 2:50:59 PM | message detail
That's an interesting concept, actually. The trick would be to make it clear that the character in question is your Mii, in which case you'd have to be casting a vote against the only videogame character you've ever invented. Plus you have good memories with that character from the times you used him to beat your friends at Wii Sports and Wii Play. Hm... I could actually see a Mii doing pretty decently, under those circumstances.

_Mega64_ | Posted 3/19/2007 3:32:41 PM | message detail
Technically, if it was you who was the Mii, it wouldn't be allowed since you didn't originate from a video game.

Everyone seems to be leaning toward Matt from Wii Sports. I think the whole novelty of a Mii from Wii Sports making the contest is worth the nomination drive. It's kinda like Nidoran F last year. It's not like many other new characters are going to win, so if we're gonna have fodder, might as well be interesting fodder.

Matt would be coasting almost purely on Wii backing, besides from maybe the occasional pro-black vote. He'd obviously choke against someone known, but against a nobody I think he'd have a chance.

Or he might go Tanner, which is always enjoyable. Either way, he'd be a much more intriguing addition than most fodder people want to nominate.

I'm going to use this lull in the action to inform everyone of a hot new lol x-stats update! Of course everyone knows about the Simulator itself, which has been serving up extrapolated results lo these past 13 months.

http://thengamer.com/xstats/

What you may not know are some of the additions I've made in the past few months, since the end of the last Character Battle. The first and most obvious is the Complete X-stats listing. I'd always had a list of all the values thrown together, but that was a mess... Zelda the series, Zelda the character a few times, and Zelda the game all together in one list. I've split that into the Character-Only All-Time Stats, which is much more useful,

http://www.thengamer.com/xstats/ranks.php?type=c

alongside listings of just the Games, just the Series, or the Series and Games together. All standings also come in 'Raw' flavor, wherever available. But the listing would hardly be complete without individual rankings for every season, so a little while back I made the long-awaited update to get each of those set up and linked in as well, from

http://www.thengamer.com/xstats/ranks.php?year=2006c

and so on.
Ngamer64 | Posted 3/19/2007 4:16:58 PM | message detail
But my most recent update, and the one I think might be most fun of all, deals with Character Histories. I had a rough version up before, where if you pulled the character's name from the dropdown box on top you'd get to see their match pic from that year along with their final adjusted x-stat value. And that was fine and good, until the other day I wanted to compare Mario vs Samus indirectly, based only on their common opponents. In other words I was saying, "forget x-stats! they're a useful tool, sure, but I only want to see concrete results right now... what have these two characters actually managed in head-to-head matchups?" Which seems to me a common sentiment. So after a major reorganization of my database, here is the kind of full Contest History I'm able to produce for every character we've seen, in the click of a button:

http://thengamer.com/xstats/ranks.php?name=Samus

As you see, you get the years alongside their final match pic (if you believe in pic factor this is of course crucial, because as you know it's only the match you lose that determines your value), followed by adjusted x-stat value. But because some question the adjustments made, as well as yearly 'strength inflation' in order to compare across years, I also include the character's rank in that year as well as their unadjusted value.

But below is where it gets really fun. There's now a section for Complete Results, which displays just what it sounds like- the result of every single matchup Samus (or whoever) has ever been involved in. And since the further goal is to create a visual representation of how that x-stat strength was determined, the results continue even after a character loses. This allows you to see why even though (for example) Ganon lost to Vincent, because Vince did so well against Sonic, who in turn looked improved against Super-Snake, who in turn made Samus look worse than Mario last year, Ganon still earns a respectable 35%.

If you want to know more about your character's opponent, clicking their name will take you to their own History and complete results. However, I've also added a little code so that now all you have to do is hover your mouse over a given opponent, and their x-stat and rank from that season will pop up automatically! So you say, wow, a 58% smashing of Squall in 2003... I wonder how far down that place him? Mouse over and you see that Squall still earned a 31.72% that year, good for 16th place on the rankings.

After the final matchup is listed (which is always that year's Championship), I've included links to both the year's Stats and its Bracket, so you're just a click away from seeing the "big picture." The brackets are formatted pretty ugly right now, but the results are accurate so I'm letting them sit for the time-being.

And just for fun, underneath I've tagged on the character's all-time record in Contest matches, along with a winning percentage. Naturally that doesn't mean alot, since sometimes Crono gets stuck playing Mario already by the 3rd round or whatnot, but it's still cool to see. So, here are the Noble Nine ranks for everyone who's been involved in all the Summer brackets, based on win percentage! Pretty awesome Histories on all of them.

1. Samus - 18-4, .826
http://thengamer.com/xstats/ranks.php?name=Samus

2. Snake - 18-5, .783
http://thengamer.com/xstats/ranks.php?name=Snake

3. Crono - 17-5, .773
http://thengamer.com/xstats/ranks.php?name=Crono

4. Sonic - 15-5, .750
http://thengamer.com/xstats/ranks.php?name=Sonic

4. Mega Man - 17-5, .750
http://thengamer.com/xstats/ranks.php?name=Mega%20Man

Personal favorite is probably Crono... what a great set of pics.

You can get to anyone history page by clicking their name on an x-stats rank, selecting their name for the drop down box, or my personal favorite, which is just typing the name into the URL.
Ngamer64 | Posted 3/19/2007 4:17:16 PM | message detail
BONUS! If you can think of a character who is listed on the site, even though she/he's never been involved in a "normal" 64-person bracket matchup, you earn a very special error message!

I'll be honest: I'm biased against the PS3, so I like to hear that news, especially since I plan to get a 360 this year. As for Dante, I hear he's not even going to be in it...but it can't hurt him, surely.

DMC4 on 360 = pure ****ing win, considering I just picked up a 360, and don't plan on getting a PS3 anytime soon. If MGS4 goes to the 360 I'll bust a nut and never stop laughing when I hear the name "Sony."

As far as character contests go... it shouldn't really help Dante any significant amount, but it can't hurt.

I hope and pray to the video game god (which would be...probably Fireball-Mario or Super Knuckles, ha) that MGS4 goes to the 360. Otherwise, barring a huge surge in popularity and ownership for the PS3 while it still has room to redeem itself, I doubt I'll ever get to play it.
