Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 437

He'd beat Kefka and could hang with Chun Li. You basically have to say that Akuma's the second strongest SF character in order to beat M.Bison by more than a slim amount.

Uhhh...Ken?

I still remember the last time we saw Ken, too...but, for what it's worth, about Chun-Li -- if you think Bowser/Ryu in 2k5 was a fluke due to some sort of SFF (like 2k4 and 2k6 would suggest), then you'd be hard-pressed not to say the same thing about Bowser/Chun-Li.

Yeah, but that way Chun Li lost to Yuna and her ho-hum victory over Lara Croft makes me think Chun Li vs. Bowser was just fine.

Point taken, I had forgotten she was in this year's contest...but she did destroy Kasumi too, 2k2 stats be damned, and Yuna practically equaled Aeris this year as well. Your case is probably more right, but you could make a case for either I would think.

LeonhartForever | Posted 2/14/2007 1:40:45 PM | message detail
But Bowser's choke job against Crono brings more things into question because it doesn't make Chun-Li look that good.

True. What I was mainly getting at was that the higher Chun-Li was, the more capable Akuma was to be at M. Bison's level. if Chun-Li is just barely over M. Bison, than I'm not gonna take Akuma > M. Bison. I don't think Akuma is that close to Chun-Li, though I'm not opposed to him being 4th in the Street Fighter line-up...just saying, with the current statistical situation, I'm keeping Akuma at 5th.

I don't wanna put too much faith in the stats for this situation, but I don't like the idea of Akuma being so close to Chun-Li. I think we can all agree Akuma's not #1 or #2 in the SF chain, and most would say Akuma's not #3...#4 is where most of us is torn, and I put Akuma at #5 because I don't think he isn't that close to Chun-Li/missed SF2 (practically go hand-in-hand). He would probably have a close match with M. Bison, and I would take Akuma over any other SF character...but I'm not giving him that edge until I see some more reasoning.

Then again though, the Villain Contest was mighty ****ed up and M. Bison could be noticably different from what we once thought (and, if so, it would probably be for the worse if Revolver's a sign).

It's one thing for the played-but-didn't-beat option to win yesterday's LoZ poll...but for more than half of the people who have played LoZ here to have not beaten it? I dunno -- LoZ's still a popular game here and this is a FAQ-site. Just doesn't sit right.

I hope CJay keeps these polls running for several series. I bet the original FF and MG's numbers will be rough to look at, and maybe we can get our first halfway-decent look at a Mega Man game too.

This polls make me think for a minute: which game has the most people beaten here?

I would wager SMB3; when you combine its popularity and multiple versions with the whistles, I think it's set. FF7 would also have a good case though, what with this poll and all:

I still stand by SMB3 though.

In my newfound love for completeness, I went back and tallied the results from every "Have You Ever Played?" to give us an all-time playership ranking, like I did for Consoles. I only used polls with a clear "No, and I've never even played it" option, so games that have only had "Do You Own" had to be left out (sucks for GE, Halo, and Melee). Altogether I found 20 games CJay has asked about. Here we go!

Have You Ever Played...

1 Tetris 97.36% 1/24/05
2 Mario 1 95.06% 2/15/07 (current, but falling)
3 Mario 3 94.30% 11/1/05
4 OoT 87.61% 11/4/05
5 LttP 84.50% 11/2/05
6 FF7 81.35% 5/8/03
7 MGS 76.77% 11/13/01
8 Zelda 1 76.29% 2/14/07
9 CT 68.36% 11/3/05
10 FFX 67.91% 5/7/03
11 FF6 66.73% 10/27/05
12 GTA: VC 63.13% 5/5/03
13 The Sims 58.89% 1/15/03
14 FF1 58.48% 6/26/06
15 Wind Waker 51.71% 5/6/03
16 Metal Gear 41.55% 6/8/06
17 DDR 40.82% 1/25/02
18 FF11 20.65% 6/13/04
19 Ragnarok 19.70% 6/12/04
20 Everquest 16.38% 6/15/03
---

Mario 1's early 95% is great, but unfortunately it appears that's almost all Power Hour... This same poll was run back in July of '06 (in prep for the Series Contest), and Mario managed only 92.97%.

Zelda 1, on the other hand, was incredibly consistent. It got 76.29 yesterday, as opposed to 76.21 last July. Looking forward to tomorrow, Final Fantasy 1 put up that 58.48 last Summer... we'll see if it can match here in '07.

BTW, be sure to note that the 76 you see there for MGS came from way back in '01. It still did OK in the newer poll from October '05, but did slip down to 72%. And the FF7 number is old as well... in hindsight it shouldn't be a surprise to anyone that it peaked at that 81%+ number just before we entered the 2003 Character Battle. Since then the game has cooled a bit to the 75% it managed after taking first in the Top Ten tally.

I agree with these Tetris remarks. I think on the official rankings (I'll put them up after this series of polls finishes) I'll list it as rank 0, along with anything like Solitaire or Minesweeper that we might see in the future, and leave Mario 3 sitting at #1.

But yeah, whooo, come on bracket!

So Zelda was unchanged in the past 8 months, while Mario went up slightly: 92.97% -> 93.54%. If this Final Fantasy number holds it would improve even more dramatically, 58.48 %-> 60.70%. But I don't think there's anyway that ends up happening... this huge NES number is sure to collapse now that all us old-school Nintendo Power Hourers have had our say.

Hey TRE, with the bracket sure to come up tonight, are you considering a 'First Vote' attempt? That is, seeing the bracket before CJay puts up the official sticky. It'll be coming up at either

Or

But I think the first is more likely.

Fine, we'll make a Contest of it. First one to post a link to the official bracket _before_ CJay will be declared the, uh... Supreme Champion of All Forever!

Welp, no new bracket, but to do get a new game to add to the all-time playrate ranks, and that's just as good. Right? Right?!

So far Sonic 1 is doing incredibly well in the poll, pulling in a full 88.00% play rate. If this number held throughout the day, Sonic would end up in 3rd place on the overall rankings- ahead of Ocarina of Time! Obviously this old school early vote is boosting the number somewhat, but still, it looks like Sonic could very well stay in the 85 range, which would be good enough to boost LttP out of its position in 4th.

BTW, Final Fantasy ended up incredibly consistent over the 8 month span yesterday, just like Zelda 1 before it. FF1 went from a 58.48% playrate up to 58.50%, still leaving it 14th in the ranks.

I was expecting that number to take a deep dive once the older late night crowd was done having their say, but it's stayed way up there. Rest of the numbers are looking good as well... appears Sonic's pretty much a lock to topple LttP at this point.

Are you forgetting that Sonic the Hedgehog was the Genesis seller? I don't know if it was a launch title, but wasn't it a pack-in? I know that Sonic was THE reason why everybody around me rushed to get a Genesis.
