"I'm only here to see how the story plays out. Any self-respecting leading man would do the same." - Balthier btw Leon - that is definitely my favorite quote of the game so far and i nominated it for the quote contest. ^_^ --- "I am the reinforcements." - Ashley Riot (Vagrant Story) |

In terms of strength, Balthier > Ashe >= Vaan > Basch >
Fran. The only way this won't be true is if I'm massively
underestimating TJF here, but I don't think I am. --- "I am the Scourge of God, appointed to chastise you! You are wicked, but I am more wicked than you!" |

I definitely think we're going to see a couple of FFXII characters in
the next character contest. I think the two frontrunners would be
Balthier and Ashe, but I'm not sure who I would call the stronger of
the two, probably Balthier. I know I'll be nominating both of them,
though. --- "With each passing day, the world finds new and exciting ways to kill a man. " |

Revolver Ocelot, Tifa Lockhart and Sarah Kerrigan had already failed to make previous contests. But after the release of Snake Eater, there was no doubt in my mind that Ocelot was going to make SC2K5. Leon Kennedy was going to make it after RE4 anyway, considering he still got in SC2K6 with no help from us. The fact that Lloyd managed to snag a 2 seed means to tell me he was going to get in with room to spare anyway. If we had known Cloud and Sephy were going to be retired in advance, I would've considered Tifa a lock, too. --- "I'm only here to see how the story plays out. Oh, and if Vaan is stronger than Basch, I'll vomit. I don't really see it being the case either. --- "I'm only here to see how the story plays out. Any self-respecting leading man would do the same." - Balthier |

I wouldn't count Tifa because at the time of the rally tournement, we
didn't know Cloud and Sephiroth were getting removed. While Lloyd did
get a ton of support, IIRC it was unexpectedly large. He probably would
have got in without the rally, but I don't think many people thought he
was a lock before the contest. I forgot about Snake Eater so I guess
Ocelot could be considered a lock like Leon was. But like Leon at least
he's had a chance to fail to make the contest. --- "Those whose memories fade seek to carve them in their hearts..." "All dreams are but another reality. Never forget..." |

Ocelot and Leon were in different circumstances to where they didn't
become as popular until an awesome new role. Basically, after those
roles, they were locks. --- "I'm only here to see how the story plays out. Any self-respecting leading man would do the same." - Balthier |

Ocelot and Leon were in different circumstances to where they didn't
become as popular until an awesome new role. Basically, after those
roles, they were locks. I'll agree on those points. Out of interest, how popular was Ocelot after MGS2? I vaguely remember people being surprised that he didn't make the SC2k3 contest and Raiden making it in instead. --- "Those whose memories fade seek to carve them in their hearts..." "All dreams are but another reality. Never forget..." |
LeonhartForever | Posted 1/25/2007 11:46:04 AM | message detail |
I can't speak of Ocelot's popularity before Snake Eater because I
didn't get into MGS until like...two months before MGS3 came out. --- "I'm only here to see how the story plays out. Any self-respecting leading man would do the same." - Balthier |
Karma Hunter | Posted 1/25/2007 11:47:04 AM | message detail |
Ocelot was squarely below Liquid before MGS3 (and he still is, but at
least it's somewhat debatable now), and I would put him on the level of
Solidus or so. I know that means nothing to you, but I don't think he
would've beaten even Raiden's lower limit back then. --- *kills self* Commit it to memory. |
HaRRicH | Posted 1/25/2007 11:49:45 AM | message detail |
I would consider Raiden to still be stronger than Revolver today, but that's not gonna be popular opinion. --- The Office > you. |
LeonhartForever | Posted 1/25/2007 11:51:26 AM | message detail |
Raiden's range is uncertain just because of how love/hate the guy was
back then. He doesn't seem to be as much now, and the trailer likely
did something to help reverse the trend, too. --- "I'm only here to see how the story plays out. Any self-respecting leading man would do the same." - Balthier |
Karma Hunter | Posted 1/25/2007 11:52:02 AM | message detail |
I think Raiden can be more popular than Ocelot today, it just all
depends on where he falls in that range (which is why I'd like to see
him in). I don't think it's the safest of bets, but his upper limit is
higher than Liquid's, not to mention that he's got nowhere to go but up
thanks to MGS4. But back then, Ocelot would have lost to Raiden regardless of where Raiden fell in that range. --- *kills self* Commit it to memory. |
LeonhartForever | Posted 1/25/2007 11:52:30 AM | message detail |
No way I'd take Raiden over Liquid before MGS4. --- "I'm only here to see how the story plays out. Any self-respecting leading man would do the same." - Balthier |

Oh, and if Vaan is stronger than Basch, I'll vomit. I don't really see it being the case either. Indeed. There's no way I can possibly see Basch being weaker than Vaan. I still dunno how Gray Fox would fare very well in a contest setting.
So far, its looking like most MGS characters with the exception of
Snake don't have much strength. --- Mr. Inverse Absolute Power WWEGSB Hardcore Legend and Board 8er Masa/Hiko |

He wouldn't be a Liquid Snake, but he would do okay...probably fodder-line, give or take a lil' bit. --- The Office > you. |
LeonhartForever | Posted 1/26/2007 5:21:15 AM | message detail |
Honestly, I think Gray Fox can do quite well. He has one of the most
memorable MGS roles. As long as he gets the cyborg ninja picture (and
unless CJayC just hates MGS that much, he should), he can do just fine. --- "I'm only here to see how the story plays out. Any self-respecting leading man would do the same." - Balthier |
Karma Hunter | Posted 1/26/2007 5:25:06 AM | message detail |
Gray Fox is one of those characters that I don't think you can get a
"bad" picture of, even if you go with melting art. His range is
actually quite high as well due to how badass he is, but sadly I'm
thinking more than a bit below the fodder line is where he'll end up. --- *kills self* Commit it to memory. |

I can't help but think Gray Fox would fail miserably... I'd definitely
take Ocelot over him. As for Raiden, if he were to go up against
Liquid, I'd be really tempted to take Raiden. --- Explicit Content. Cheer Up Emo Kids |

HaRRicH | Posted 1/26/2007 10:11:53 AM | message detail |
I've now decided that, as long as it gets a high seed so I feel
somewhat more justified in the upset, I'll be taking whatever
"SNAAAAAAAAKE!" quote that makes the bracket to win the contest for the
upset. It's a popular fad-phrase, it's a defining phrase from MGS, the
MG series is multi-platform and has been around since NES (or even
before, maybe?), MGS4 is highly anticipated despite the PS3 doing
everything it can to diminish its hype, and Solid Snake's appearance in
SSBB's trailers have obviously affected him in the character contest.
Besides all that, this contest is going to be a crapshoot anyway and --
though hopefully fun and all -- I don't plan to analyze anything
terribly hard for the contest. I mean, really...it's quotes. This
contest will probably feature my riskiest picks to date, whether I
really mean to or not. --- The Office > you. |

Ha, I bet every gamer has seen more game over screens than game endings. I wouldn't argue against that, but a game over message is still a message you see when you failed. Oh, I've determined I'm going to be taking "SNAAAAAAAAKE" to win this thing since the beginning. Granted, I'm doing it purely out of fanboyism and have no real justification for it, but with this thing being as up in the air as it is I don't really care.
