I would say that the Wii has three "great" games right now in Twilight Princess, Trauma Center: Second Opinion, and Excite Truck. The system is showing a lot of promise, and I think 2007 will be huge for Nintendo, but there's no question that it doesn't deserve to win this poll.

In other news, I was looking at ds stuff, and I was surprised to see that pokemon diamond/pearl aren't online. I thought they were going to be the pokemon games to finally break that barrier, is there a confirmed online pokemon in the works?

The Japanese version of DP allows for trading and battling over Wi-fi. I suppose that isn't a guarentee that the North American version will have Wi-fi, but I can't see why they would remove it.

After today's poll, I still can't fathom how GTA lost to Warcraft in the Series Contest. We see right now less than 20% of the site plays WoW, and GTA:VC (probably GTA's weakest console game) stormed WC3's ass twice in GotY polls for 2002. Throw in that GTA:SA was GotY in 2004, GTA3 was runner-up only to FFX in 2002, every GTA game was higher in the Top 100 List than any WC game, and GTA's presence on the PS2, Xbox, and PSP being bigger here than WC's on the PC here...

...I know the match was close, I feel certain it wouldn't have won without rallying (though it would still be close, no matter how you cut it), and nevermind the fact that match is old news right now...but it just doesn't make sense. Didn't before the match, doesn't after the match...I guess people just don't consider GTA to be a series somehow.

to add to that, do you really think KOTOR is that strong? 35% or so on SSBM 2k4? (don't feel like doing the math.) I think GTA is kind of like Halo, a core fanbase that will vote it over most anything and an antifanbase who will vote against it in the same way. The List seems to agree with this idea (#8 for Halo, #9 for SA) and it helps explain the GOTY poll.

Yup. Couple that with KotOR being one of the better Xbox titles, and you have a legitimately strong game.

SSB Melee (2004g) VS Star Wars: KotOR (2004g)

SSB Melee has a strength of 41.33.
Star Wars: KotOR has a strength of 30.48.

SSB Melee wins with 63.13% of the vote!
A win of 23,079 with 87,914 total votes cast.

I'll give it strength, but not that much strength. and that's the same fourpack, so there's no weirdness going on there.

yeah, I thought the same. this is all after-the-fact reasoning, searching for an excuse for what happened. but at the same time, Master Chief looks somewhat legit against Crono if you don't have any other data..

lol game contest x-stats, but just for kicks:

Star Wars: KotOR (2004g) VS Metal Gear Solid 2 (2004g)

Star Wars: KotOR has a strength of 30.48.
Metal Gear Solid 2 has a strength of 35.77.

Metal Gear Solid 2 wins with 57.39% of the vote!
A win of 12,006 with 81,184 total votes cast.

KotOR getting 42% of the vote against MGS2 seems more than reasonable. Don't forget that it has some PC strength as well. And those two are in the same fourpack as well, so no funny business there either.

Not to mention SMRPG getting SFF'd by CT. Seriously, there aren't many SNES games that would have more overlap than those two.

Precisely. SSBM isn't some uber game. Sure it's strong, but not godly, at least not then. Star Wars' fanbase is evident here. I mean, use this board as a sample - is there anybody on this board that dislikes it? I don't think I've met anybody on the site who does. I know the boards have a minimal impact, but it's useful as a microcosm. All the evidence points to KotOR being legit. What factors would contribute to an overperformance for KotOR/underperformance on SSBM's part, anyway?

GTA anti-votes, of course. Still, I don't think those are particularly numerous. DK didn't look particularly impressive against Vercetti, and nor did Kefka.

hence why I said SSBM 2k4. I don't think it was nearly as strong then as it is presumably is now. and I wasn't trying to say anything with those x-stats, I was just pointing them out because they're pretty hilarious.

KOTOR worth 42% on MGS2? don't agree there. I can be in the minority here, I don't mind.

Just as long as you don't say it's because both were Square RPGs. SMRPG is a Nintendo game no matter how you want to look at it. A huge part of its popularity is due to being a Mario game. It just happened to de developed by Square. There definitely IS some overlap due to both being popular late era SNES games. And for people that played both games after FFVII (RPGs became much more popular... as did Square), I could see an overlap. But yeah, I agree for the most part.

I still don't really understand Warcraft/GTA... you can call anti-GTA votes all you want, but I see a whole hell of a lot more WoW hate on the boards every day. Granted boards =/= general public, but in this case I don't see why it wouldn't. My only explanation for it is that the Warcraft RTS games would be able to hold their own in a games contest, and I severely underestimated them. Granted, if Warcraft/GTA ever happened again, I'd still take GTA.

That sounds about right. MGS2 has probably boosted, given how well Snake did. and KotOR has yet to have the "nostalgia" factor - it doesn't qualify as a 'retro' game yet, it's sort of...in limbo. Not sure if that would actually be a factor, but still worth pointing out.

well, the only other explanation for GTA/WC is that GTA completely fell off the map. I wouldn't rule that out completely, but that's a huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge drop. I guess you could say that WC1-3 helped out here more than we expected, but even then..

One thing about the 128-bit division is that during that era, there are a lot of distinct fanbases. The video game industry has blown up a lot since the 16-bit days. People were fans of ALL the popular games back then, while today there is a bit more separation... I could see KOTOR doing well on MGS2. Remember KOTOR is an Xbox/PC game after all. There are going to be a bunch of voters for it that Metal Gear's overall popularity can't pull away from it.

I don't think it really fell off the map though.... wasn't that match around the same time the whole "Hot Coffee" scandal was going on? If anything I would think there would be more traffic for GTA for people who thought they might be able to find the mod in FAQs or something.

Nah, I don't think GTA is that weak where it struggles against Dragon Quest and Silent Hill gives it a run. WC just completely bombed against SMB, whether it's just the ralliers went away or WC supporters drawing a hard line at how much they would support it ("It's friggin' SMB!")...
