I'm surprised that ESIV can't even come close to competing. Looks like

Ha...and, as a side-note, looking back at previous Xbox/360 polls, one
could say it was obvious this would happen (though I would be down
their throat about it if they did). Shooters like Halo, Halo 2, and
CoD2 have all won GotY's here before, then other casual-friendly games
like Splinter Cell and Ninja Gaiden Black have as well. Meanwhile,
Morrowind had 3rd in 2k2's (behind Splinter Cell and MGS2:S) and Fable:
The Lost Chapters had 3rd last year (behind Ninja Gaiden Black and
Half-Life 2). SW:KotOR won GotY once, to be fair, and Morrowind is
supposedly no Oblivion...but despite the arguments made by myself and
others for Oblivion, I think this poll finalizes where the hearts and
souls of Xbox/360 fans are at: the latest FPS. --- The Office > you. |

Looks like my FFXII : KH2 potential for this poll wasn't giving GoW
enough credit. We might even have an interesting upset candidate for a
next Games Contest...but even if it does surprisingly well in the
overall poll too, I fear GTA-syndrome. --- *kills self* Commit it to memory. |

Until the 360 sells more, I wouldn't say that about GoW yet. If Halo 3
is out by the time we have another Game Contest, then I would
definitely agree...but until then, I'm gonna go easy on its upset

Gears of War is laying the smack down on Oblivion. I can't believe that Gears of War wasn't even mentioned
in this topic during early discussion of the final GotY polls last
topic. My eyes practically popped out when I first saw that Gears of
War hadn't even been mentioned in the discussion. I was like...
"huh, did I miss something?" No slight on Oblivion, but I simply
couldn't see it as a gimme for Xbox 360 game of the year seeing how
Gears of War splashed and how popular the game currently is. Plus, it's
not like Elder Scrolls impressed in the series contest (blame it on
people not knowing Oblivion was "Elder Scrolls" all you want :-P). The only thing people were pointing to was the early GotY poll. And again, each of those main options in that poll appealed to mostly separate demographics (KHII:PS2, Oblivion:Xbox/360, NSMB:Nintendo/handheld). It said little about how those games would fare against other popular games within their demographic. Well really, I didn't expect Gears of War to have any trouble with it.
After seeing everybody automatically take Oblivion, I thought maybe
there would be a possibility
of Gears of War being the next flop in GotY polls rather than another
Halo (as it's looking to be). Plus I started considering the
possibility that Oblivion's PC fanbase in addition to Gears of War
possibly flopping could give Oblivion a win. But I still fully expected
Gears of War to take the poll without much of a problem (at least how
FFXII took the PS2 poll). In retrospect, this shouldn't be surprising. The Xbox/360 fanbase isn't known as being privy to RPGs over something like Gears of War. Oblivion did well in that poll because there were no better options for that fanbase to pick. As far as Oblivion being a popular PC game... Yeah, it has that. But it's no Warcraft, Starcraft, or Half-Life as far as PC popularity goes. It's not like the PC gaming base is incredibly large (look at the PC GotY vote totals compared to the DS, Gamecube, PS2). And from this poll, it's apparent that the PC fanbase didn't bother to support Oblivion in this poll (or maybe it was the 360 fanbase helping support Oblivion in the PC poll??!??!?!). --- Currently playing: Resident Evil 4, Twilight Princess (GC), Castlevania PoR, Yoshi's Island DS |

I'd bet that 90%+ of 360 owners on this site have a PS2/GCN, and that a most of them have a DS, too. And if they're RPG fans, they probably own both KH2 and Oblivion. There's actually been a lot of Star Wars-related games that have done
well in GotY polls. We see tonight's poll right now, SW:KotOR was
Xbox-GotY, SW:KotOR was 2nd or 3rd in an Xbox-GotY with Halo 2,
SW:Battlefield won a multi-platform poll before... ...does anybody else have other examples? --- The Office > you. |

*makes triumphant return* having read all the arguments made in this topic, I was saying things to myself like "KH2 over FF12? you're nuts!" and "Oblivion over Gears of War? ha!", but it's always easier to say things like that after you've seen the result. (though I hadn't been to the main page yet today and didn't know the 360 poll was up) I also agree that GOW would suffer from "GTA Syndrome", or Halo Syndrome, or whatever you want to call it. I think, assuming we get the Big Three in the final poll, it'll look something like this: Twilight Princess: 48% FFXII: 31% GOW: 21% we'll see though. GOW would have decent strength, but it obviously won't approach Halo's. I think it would be kind of like Ryu, something that could look good as long as it's not going up against Square or Nintendo. I could see something like NSMB beating it in a poll just because a lot of Nintendo voters will back Mario against an Xbox title no matter what. as for the nomination rally? well, assuming we get a character battle, I want to see Akuma more than anybody else. I think Mewtwo, Rinoa/Seifer and Balthier would be great, too. I don't want to see FF7 character #6, SSBM character #10 or FF character who had a cameo in KH2 #15. I still want to see Fox back though, and I think some of the best characters to get in would be the ones that made it and simply need the right opponent now. POP, Kratos, Raiden come to mind here. I'd much rather rally for those guys than a fighting game character that we know will be at the fodder line if they're lucky. and if we get a game contest? I'd like to see people decide on a Mega Man game and get it in. I'd like to see Chrono Cross. (I still want to see Serge or Citan pretty badly, by the way, but I've pretty much given up hope) I'd like to see all the new games, of course, but I don't think they'd need rallying. I want to see Super Mario Kart and I want to see either Majora's Mask or SSB. I'd also like to see a Sonic game get another chance, ie not against Nintendo. --- xyzzy |

no, the original would be bad. it's between three games: 2 3 X I actually have thought about having a little contest should we get games nominations -- those three and another random Mega Man game (maybe the original) in a fourpack, where the voters agree to nominate the winner no matter what. that way we get to see one Mega Man game's popularity.
