When I did my rankings, I was actually thinking of next year's contest, which would probably be post-SSBB.... With just the SSBB trailer, though, Meta-Knight might be able to beat Epona...or maybe that's just my bias. Hrm....I figure I'll take Epona over Meta-Knight before then, as sick as that makes my stomach.

...But it's Pit. This is the equivalent of the Ice Climbers or Game & Watch. This is going to be a one time old school appearance. Kid Icarus wasn't ever that popular, not to mention just how old the game is. I don't care how much Kirby's series bombed in the contest. It'd still own Kid Icarus nine ways from Sunday.

Just jumping into an old conversation, but I think you're underestimating Pit in a comparison to Ice Climbers or Game & Watch. Sure, he had a one time old school appearance, but he's ****ing Kid Icarus! He's going to be far more popular than Ice Climbers or Mr. Game & Watch could ever hope to be. Seriously, his SSBB character design is pure casual bait. Pretty boy arrow slinger with a bow that separates into two wicked short swords? And he flies on top of that? I'd be shocked if he doesn't end up with a huge following in that game. Same with Meta Knight, sure he doesn't have a HUGE presence in the Kirby series, but his very character design is built to be popular once he is exposed to a larger fanbase. SSBB is that doorway. And with that huge airship as one of the levels, I don't see how Meta Knight won't have a standout presence in that game. I think the both of them will be solid midcarders after SSBB. I wouldn't take Nightmare over either of them...

Now if we were talking pre-SSBB, then disregard that post.

I've been consumed with Twilight Princess (best game ever, lives up to the hype, etc., etc.), so what was the verdict on Link v. Cloud? Despite having Kingdom Hearts II and Advent Children, Cloud suffered by far his worst loss ever in a contest, both in percentage and in total votes. In fact, Link beat Cloud by more than he beat Sephiroth in 2005.

The Twilight Princess hype here before I left was palpable -- as predicted! -- so was the general consensus the hype contributing to that dominative show? I'm just curious because Link after Twilight Princess should be absolutely insane. I like Link even more because of Twilight Princess and I certainly can't be alone there. I mean, after TP there's no way Link gets any of that "He's got no character! He's just an avatar!" or whatever.

But yeah, just wanted to get the answer on that. Looks like the offseason is definitely already kicking in given how slow this topic is going. Hopefully get a Games Contest next summer instead of a character battle!

I've been tinkering around with the x-stats a bit, and I found a very interesting match-up.

Lara Croft (2006c) VS Alucard (2006c)

Lara Croft has a strength of 24.56.
Alucard has a strength of 24.69.

Alucard wins with 50.26% of the vote!
A win of 610 with 115,816 total votes cast.

The match itself would also be very interesting, since Lara's night vote is a killer and Alucard really just gets weaker through the entire day.

Yeah, it was pre-SSBB. Afterwards, Pit probably won't be at the bottom, but until then, I can't see him beating anybody on that list. I know Kid Icarus isn't down there as low as Ice Climbers or Game & Watch, but I still wouldn't take Pit to beat Meta-Knight. Please don't take Kirby potentially getting double SFF'd as an indication that everybody besides Kirby would suck. Let's not get into the whole characters =/= games stuff again.

Well by pre-SSBB, we're talking about pre-trailer right? Because even by that trailer alone, Pit is on the map to plenty of gamers now. I'm sure he and Meta-Knight have gained a lot already from that trailer. Sure, it's not the full extent of what their popularity will be... but I certainly wouldn't call Pit weak now. He could beat Nightmare if we held a poll today and I wouldn't even blink twice.

Well, I suppose him beating Nightmare NOW wouldn't be a shock if it did similarly for Pit that it seems to have done for Snake (though we can't be sure exactly how much of it was SSBB. Remember that MGS4 was huge at E3, too), but I still wouldn't take him over Meta-Knight.

Ah, I wouldn't be surprised at Pit beating Meta Knight right now. Their appearances in SSBB trump anything they had going for themselves before that by far. Even if Meta Knight has a slightly bigger presence with the Kirby series, it still means next to nothing in the big picture compared to SSBB. All it would take for Pit to beat Meta Knight is the SSBB fanbase to prefer him over Meta Knight. Of course, there's nothing to indicate that happening... I just wanted to emphasize that I don't think Meta Knight's presence in the Kirby series makes a difference post-trailer.

I feel the need to say that Ganon is going to rock faces in the next contest.

And Midna is going to have some damn good strength! Navi 2.0 she is not. Best character to come out of Nintendo since Link.

...Yuna > Auron isn't that bad, in terms of personal preference, as long as you don't count FFX-2 in the mix. Honestly, she was an awesome character, and a lot (I didn't say all) of the criticism she gets is because of Hedy Burress, not her character. I'd still put Auron above her, but not by a whole lot.

In terms of a contest though? Yeah, no chance Yuna beats Auron.

Zelda was higher than Ganondorf in 2k5 and higher in 2k3 if you assume 2k3 Magus = 2k5 Magus.

If you assume Magus 2K5 = Magus 2K3, that places Ganondorf 2K3 at 31.74%, while Zelda was at 30.29% that year. Also, measuring from Alucard 2K3 brings Ganondorf 2K4 to 32.16% on BL. So, Ganondorf was arguably stronger back then. Besides that, it's been basically proven that Ganondorf was under-rated in 2K5, considering looking at how everyone in Samus' 2k5 division did better than most expected, even after accounting for anticipated boosts...

...that's all relative. Ganondorf didn't really do better than expected, and if anything I was a bit disappointed that Auron couldn't finish ahead of him in the stats this year. Aside from them, there's Yuna...and she finished ahead of BOTH of them (which is just stupid).

I can't say that proves G-dorf was underrated in 2k5 because the numbers just aren't reliable.

Oh and also Magus 2k5 is overrated cuz Knuckles 2k5 =/= Snake 2k4 and stuff

creative's values were nearly arbitrary for Samus' (Zebes?) division, though, and Diablo/Ganondorf, Auron's past experience, and Samus 2K4 (plus the Nintendo Boost) all suggested Samus and (/or?) Ganondorf was underadjusted.

Well, I'm not saying Ganondorf *isn't* underrated (indeed, I take him over Zelda at least indirectly, but Zelda likely has the SFF edge against others hence the 45% on Samus), but there's nothing really concrete to suggest it to any huge degree. Adjusting through Diablo, G-dorf's not much higher than Zelda at all...

And I also have contemplated the idea of Squall overperforming on Vincent, but it just doesn't line up to me -- as weird as it seems to say it now, 43% on Snake with ANY potential SFF is no joke. I like the idea of Knuckles overperforming on Squall better, the guy just had a HUGE bandwagon after that Magus upset.

You have Ganondorf at 13 when he failed to get out of round 1. You have Bowser and Dante on the list when they both lost in round 2 and No Aeris despite her getting to round 3 and No Yuna despite her getting to round 4. The list maker's bias is painfully obvious.

The round you get to only gives a general idea of your strength. If the other characters that are near you are pushovers you can get far without any real strength. Even Serious Sam has a win on his record. Yuna and Scorpion both had elite 8 runs because the other 7 characters around them were weak. Ganondorf drew one of the few opponents he couldn't beat for his Round 1 opponent. Even Cloud wouldn't make it out of Round 1 if he drew someone like Link(see Summer 2k5 contest).
