Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 431

You can't really compare these results to previous matches, though. The format is totally different, so it's expected that the results would be as well.

Heh, I'm not suggesting it means anything, I'm just saying that using this as evidence that Samus rSFF'd Snake is kinda ridiculous.

Not 'rSFF', but a slight underperformance (for example my stats have Samus getting 52% on Snake, she got 53%). But I don't think anyone's really taking these results to draw any serious conclusions anyway. <_<

I'm going back and calling Link/Samus a fluke, BTW.

Which part? Samus still got SFF'd. Honestly, do you think Squall jumped up 3.5% in 2005 out of nowhere? Plus, it makes Luigi's and Kirby's supposed boosts in 2005 look a little less extreme. Not to mention, KOS-MOS doesn't end far behind what she got on her in 2003 even NOW.

I'm more perplexed with how Mario is doing. At this rate he'll be doing very good just to get more than he had yesterday, which means that he got virtually nothing from Samus' absence. For as bad as he SFFed her and as much as she seemed to evade SFF against Link...yeesh.

The only thing I can think of is that Mario already took all of Samus's voters that he could on day 1. After that, with no SFF'd votes, there weren't any hardcore Nintendo-lovin' voters left to support Samus, so her votes didn't go to Mario. The only question is why so many of her votes went to Link...but that could just be because he's Link.

Not 'rSFF', but a slight underperformance (for example my stats have Samus getting 52% on Snake, she got 53%). But I don't think anyone's really taking these results to draw any serious conclusions anyway. <_<

Well, okay, that's hardly unreasonable. Some people have suggested that Samus would've been crushed (relatively) if not for rSFFing Snake though, and I've never believed in that.

Sephiroth still down about 2% from yesterday, and Mario even down about .5%. The only reasonable explanation for them dropping is bracket voters, but certainly by this point they wouldn't have that much of an impact, right? Especially on Sephiroth.

I guess there's no reasonable explanation.

Whoa, don't go into hyper-Squall defensive mode yet, Leonhart. I still think Samus got SFFed, but not as much as she 'should' have. Samus would get utterly annihilated today by today's Link, I think.

Sorry, gut instinct.

Plus, if you just want a completely boring reason for why the results are different, we don't have 100% of the voting pool returning today.

Hayabusa/Jill were practically identical on both days. I'm not sure how much difference the different voting pool makes.

Well, a one-on-one poll is a little different from a 5-way poll, although the trends in Hayabusa/Jill seemed to be different the first day. From what I recall, Hayabusa looked to be on his way to winning without much threat of comeback before the poll closed.

Hmmm...Looks like Sephiroth is gaining fast right now. Doesn't look like Snake will finish 3rd, after all. Oh well.

I wonder if CJayC is going to be following the trend of the regular contest picture themes here. After all, we had full body yesterday, head shots today.

...Does this mean sprites tomorrow? If so, Snake is doomed.

Hypothetical situation:

Cloud is the other 3rd party character for the SSBB, undoubtedly stronger than Link(raw stats), but does he still end up losing the match?
Mac Arrowny | Posted 11/15/2006 10:53:05 AM | message detail
If Cloud gets in SSBB, Link stands no chance against him. I doubt the SFF would be anything too major (especially once the game is actually released >_>) and his boost would be absolutely enormous, far larger than whatever Link gets from TP/PH/SSBB.

I am guessing "impartial nintendo votes" favor Link heavily. No matter which Nintendo character is tossed from the battle royale, Link is the 2nd choice for most Nintendo fans. A Samus fan would vote Samus > Link > Mario, and Mario fans vice versa. There is no other explanation for such a pathetic performance by Mario today. Samus fans who aren't loyal to Nintendo probably hopped on Snake or Cloud bandwagon.
KleenexTissue50 | Posted 11/15/2006 10:57:05 AM | message detail
For some reason, I don't see Cloud getting into SSBB boosting him all that much. The only way I see Cloud beating Link anytime soon is if FFVII gets remade.

That would be my gut reaction too. But a match between Link vs Cloud has far less votes that can be swayed one way or the other, compared to Snake vs. Samus. I think it is very possible Link can compete with Cloud. Here is hoping Cloud, MM, or Sonic makes the roster!
MasterOfHunters | Posted 11/15/2006 11:00:45 AM | message detail
But you must consider that Cloud is close enough to Link that even a mild boost gives him a chance.

Yeah, agree. The Nintendo fanbase isn't suddenly going to abandon Link just because Cloud appears in Smash; it isn't as if Link won't be in it, in addition to Twilight Princess.

I've always said that if you appear in something like Smash Bros., you're just asking for Link to SFF you. It's his fanbase -- forget just Nintendo -- and Cloud appearing there is only going to help him against non-Nintendo characters. He'd lose that support when he went up against Link.
