Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 429

One thing I nailed last year is that I suggested the whole Devil Division get adjusted down except Vincent.

And whaddya know, I was right!

Uh, what? How do you figure that?

How do we adjust these (almost) final X-stats to compare against Base Link? Do we need to use that Least Squares to figure it out? If so, can anyone but creative check that for us?

I'd like to add these values into lol x-stats tonight.

Seriously. Squall's only slipped a bit from Vincent, and Dante's actually closer to Vincent than he was. Terra and Kerrigan may have slipped a tad, but who cares? That's 50% accuracy in your speculation at best.

not just his, but Zero's as well. I struggle to believe that MM was constant. I'm still in the Sonic camp, but I'm up for an argument of someone not in the NN.

Again, it's really looking like Sonic's half of the male division should be adjusted up. Ignoring that part of the bracket, would Samus 2k4 work at all?

It's almost like holding Crono constant, just a bit weaker.

Isn't holding Sonic and Mega Man constant virtually the same thing anyway? They got about the same on Snake, and they went about 50-50 last year.

I think I'll just be in the camp that basically ignores these things except for argumentation purposes... though arbitrary adjustments and a bajillion sets of stats are fun! (Not sarcasm... they are!)

not just his, but Zero's as well.

What? Keeping him proportional with Zero or holding Zero at the same as his 2005 value? Holding him at his 2005 value doesn't seem like it would work...

just the fact that Mega Man and Zero both disappointed in every match they were in. you can say we had the wrong perceptions, but you can't expect me to see five underperformances between them in a row and not think there was some kind of decline.

though it may make the numbers look better.. who knows.

...If Vincent did as he was supposed to, then he wasn't overrated and the rest of the division isn't overrated because Squall loses...about .3% on him from last year.

In other words, you can't say Vincent was fine and the rest were overrated.

2K2 is easy to explain. There was a VERY large demographic switch and vote total intake right in the middle of the contest. That thing gained momentum like no other contest ever has or will. I still think Cloud beats Mario with votals akin to the first round of that contest.

I love the argument over stats every post-contest as if they bear any linear relevance. Those stats certainly account for increase in vote totals through a contest, rallying, and about 9 million SFF possibilities. Yep.

Okay, honest? I don't care for the stats that much. Whenever I did my oracle picks, I never looked at the stats and adjusted them up/down at all. I just went with what I felt was reasonable. And a lot of the time, my picks weren't that off.

So basically, with not paying any attention to the stats, Vincent got on Sonic exactly what I expected of him, and Dante and Squall both disappointed. If they're closer to Vincent in the stats than last year, I'll blame it on the 2nd SSBB trailer released mid-contest. If you don't buy that, oh well.

Not that it makes a bit of difference; these things are as useless as the 2k2 stats.

Squall disappointed because we had no idea how beastly Snake was. Considering he's looking to get 46-47%+ on Mega Man, Crono, and Sonic, it's ridiculous to say the division was overrated.

yeah, no matter what we do with these stats Squall is going to look equal to his 2k5 self (or maybe more) and Dante looks beastly if you take Yoshi's result against Snake seriously. there is pretty much no reason to question the DD at this point.

A constant Mega Man is fine. Mega Man hasn't lost a step... how many times have I gotta say this? The only match Mega Man disappointed me in was his match with Snake! Sora had reason to boost like mad, and he was kinda obscured last year anyway. Axel had reason to be decent, with his fan favorite status from a contender for GameFAQs GotY. Ryu had reason to be underrated from a flukish Bowser match.

I agree with Lopen... it seems like people in these topics can never get perceptions out of there head, despite being shown something completely different. If you want to wish Sonic is leagues ahead of MM now, go right ahead and be horribly wrong. There's reasons for MM performing as he did, and his match with Snake, in comparison to Sonic's is all that you should need to know that he's nearly equal to his x-stat value last year. I wouldn't actually base them off of him, but he didn't fluctuate more than 1%, and that's being generous.
