A lot of you may feel inclined to believe that this year proves that
the X-Stats are useless or that voters are inherently unpredictable and
thus the contest isn't even worth analyzing. I beg to differ. I think the positive growth trends of characters like Sonic, Sora, Tifa and Snake, as well as the negative decline trends for Crono and Mega Man, can pretty accurately be explained -- and I think these trends are likely to continue in 2K7 and maybe even 2K8. The reasoning is simple: characters who haven't done anything lately are bound to slowly, gradually decline in their popularity, by tiny but still noticable intervals every year, espesically when GameFAQs continues to attract an increasingly casual crowd to its website. On the other hand, characters who are still doing things lately are bound to grow as their characters continue to make headlines in the latest gaming magazines and get great reviews at GameSpot. If the hype's there, people are bound to continue to show interest and support these characters. Nothing -- no other thing I can imagine -- better proves this point than the simple fact that Snake and Sonic are most likely going to be playable characters in SSBB. Think about it; the fact that Sega are (not so secretly) pushing for Sonic's inclusion in SSBB, and the fact that Snake is already in SSBB, suggets that Konami and Sega, Kojima and Team Sonic are still aggressively promoting Snake and Sonic in their marketing campaigns. Why? Because Snake and Sonic are going to be heavily involved in next-gen games. Because Konami and Sega haven't forgotten about them and thrown them and the back-burner. And as SSBB, MGS4 and the Next-Gen Sonic continue to make headlines, gamers are smacked upside the head every day with the latest Snake and Sonic news. The same is true of Kingdom Hearts, which has led to a spike in Sora's recent popularity, because Square has done a masterful job marketing it; and so long as Square and Nintendo continue to milk the crap out of FFVII and Legend of Zelda, yes, Link and Cloud and Sephiroth are still going to remain constant in our top three. These trends are going to continue. Unless a great next-gen Mega Man title is announced that resurrects the dying series, and unless a Chrono Trigger remake or a true CT-sequel is announced by Square, expect Mega Man and Crono to continue to ever-so-slowly decline. It will be a slow and steady decline, difficult to notice on a yearly basis, but it will happen. And the first sign may be in 2K7, when Vincent, Sora or Ganondorf will very likely be strong enough to upset Mega Man, causing the first NN-loss to a non-NN character. |

| You could take Snake vs. Squall and Mega Man vs.
Ryu as two arguments for Snake/Mega 2K6 being almost all Snake...
there's more to oppose that, though... Mega/Sora, Snake/Yoshi, those
being more significant due to being R3 matches, and the intangible

I didn't think it at first, but maybe Snake/Yoshi was partially a result of Solid ****? I'll chalk Sora/MM up to Sora boosting to Ganondorf's 2k5 level <_< TuRtLe ~~~ Pretty much out of the contest lol x-stats |

I think the Solid **** effect of Snake losing votes in his sprite
rounds can be fairly accurately proven just by digging up all the past
years results in his sprite rounds (against Bowser and Yoshi, etc) and
comparing to his other performances. Plus, it just makes sense that
Squall would be stronger than Yoshi, but that wouldn't be true at all
if there were no Solid **** effect. In fact, Snake isn't the only one who was hurt by sprites. Remember Link's godawful Bible Belt sprite against Magus in 2K3? And everyone wonders why we overrated Magus so heavily in 2K4 and 2K5 -- our 33% Magus/Link stat in 2K3 was a farce, as Magus' awesome sprite was facing a sprite that didn't really look like Link at all. |

Ironically enough in an attempt to disprove my theory you prove it, merely by using different language. Crono is declining percentage-wise if higher vote totals from a casual influx of voters all support "the more recognizable character" and if "the more recognizable character" is, in this case, Sonic. And why would Sonic be the "more recognizable character" these days? Didn't I just explain that exact argument in that previous post of mine? |

I'd argue maybe Mario/Crono 2k3, but as it turned out, it wouldn't have

I think the anti-Sonic fans were more annoying than the Sonic fans.
Even Smurf wasn't claiming Crono sucks and that Chrono Trigger's
overrated, but I saw a ton of topics deriding Sonic. --- Gordon Freeman finally won, but somehow, the universe survived... thus allowing me to tell said universe about how I was owned by NClark128. |

Snake beating Mega Man i saw as a possibility. (i didn't think it was
likely before the contest started, but still possible.) Sonic beating
Crono i also saw has unlikely, but possible. but Zelda over Samus?
there is NO WAY that one is happening. i know a lot of matches haven't
made much sense lately, but all signs of logic point to Samus breezing
past Zelda with ease. this match had better maintain SOME semblance of
sanity by Samus winning with at least 57%. --- This is cyko posting from a friend's house!!! >_> |
