Sonic will definitely take the NPH vote from Crono. It's safe to say he will win the morning and the day vote as well.

It depends how long Sonic can keep his lead going into the night, and how much of a lead Crono can build before the day hits.

Sonic got a pretty solid night vote aganist Vincent, who one would assume would be pretty good with it.

Now Crono is the master of the night vote, but as we've seen from Magus v Knuckles, Crono could storm to a 700 vote lead and lose by a few thousand.

What I'm expecting tomorrow is Crono to peak at a 200 vote lead and for Sonic to very quickly demolish it and to win by about 3000.

Vincent's horrible in the Nintendo Hour at least. He is from FFVII after all. And Crono's actually pretty good at the Nintendo Power Hour. He was above 60% by its end against Bowser, and finished with 57%. It was around 5 AM when he began to fall rapidly against Bowser.

In the first 2 hours, Sonic built a lead of 1000 on a stronger Vincent than Crono got only 700 on.

The days of Sonic being a weak turd during the night are gone. He's really improved his night vote at the expense of his day vote in the last 2 years.

And yet Sonic finished with 3% less than what Crono finished with? .....Must be because of Sonic now sucks with the day vote!

Really though, the vote totals this year are higher, and the start time is earlier.

Well, I at least hope this puts to rest the whole "X won last time, I can't see Y swinging that %" argument I've seen time and time again.

Seriously, this is like a 14% swing in Snake's favor over the course of two years. It's ridiculous.

Yeah, I agree, and I was using that argument a lot. This match is a great thing for this contest, because it firmly does away with the (pretty common, I think, at least by the way people talk about it) notion that the contest can't change/it's very predictable.

Kaxon | Posted 11/9/2006 12:39:20 PM | message detail
I think the best thing about this match (and Samus vs Tifa) is that it provides some hope for the future of the contests. If Snake can turn a 43/57 loss into a 56/44 win in two years, what's to say he (or someone else) couldn't beat Link in two or three more years? If this contest is going to stay interesting, what we really need to see are shakeups at the top (and to stop removing characters from the bracket), and today we're getting one.

Here's to putting Clinkeroth back in the main bracket. Snake > Sephiroth in 2007!

what's to say he (or someone else) couldn't beat Link in two or three more years?

Because Link isn't going to stop increasing. He is getting his biggest game ever in about a week, which is certainly going to help him out a ton. Zelda games come out every few years too, so he has almost nothing to worry about when it comes to dropping off. And there's no way I expect someone to catch him after that.

Honestly, I doubt it's going to change his strength all that much once the hype has worn off (unless it really does turn out to be the best game ever which is pretty unlikely statistically). Link is already ridiculously popular and ridiculously well known, plus he's been the center of huge hype for the last two years. Once the game has been out for a while and the hype has died down, I think we're pretty much going to be seeing the same old Link. Which is still pretty impressive, of course. But someone like Snake still has a lot more room to grow than Link does.

MyWorldIsZelda | Posted 11/9/2006 12:54:20 PM | message detail
There are plenty of characters who are ridiculously well-known and ridiculously popular that still manage to increase; Link is going to be no different. He's going to increase a good deal from TP and he'll stay there throughout the rest of these contests. People aren't suddenly going to forget Twilight Princess later on.

Besides that, this match isn't Snake all increasing. It's pretty evident that Mega Man took a nice sized fall from the last time these two faced off, combined with some Snake increase. Someone like Snake is relying on, what, SSBB? Yeah, you're getting into Link's fanbase there and are now able to be SFFed.

I don't think we're ever going to see anyone outside of Cloud ever being able to compete with Link post-Twilight Princess, and even then Cloud won't provide any real competition unless that FFVII remake comes out sometime. The contests are still unpredictable, just now as far as the winner goes. Link's lost all of once -- and that was over three years ago -- and he's not going down any time soon.

Mega Man games come out more often than that, and you see what's happening to him. People in this topic tend to assume nothing ever changes (even when faced we have evidence to the contrary staring us in the face). I'm not claiming Link is expected to lose or anything, but it's just dumb to assume Link is invincible forever. He's not.

I'm not claiming Link is expected to lose or anything, but it's just dumb to assume Link is invincible forever. He's not.

...That's sort of Mega Man's problem. He just have a game come out every few years. He has multiple games come out every year. He never has that big game that people can look forward to anymore. Link gets a game every few years that gets highly anticipated and is always huge. He's in the last long running series that doesn't get whored out with numerous spin-offs and games that are just made to cash in on the Zelda brand.

Someone like Cloud may be able to beat Link after a FFVII remake -- I still very much doubt it, but it's certainly debatable -- but Snake? That's just really out there, especially when the game that is supposed to take him to this level is one that is big among the Nintendo fanbase. It's very, very unlikely that Link will lose now and that gets more unlikely after Twilight Princess comes out.

We have seen Link lose once, so he's not entirely invincible, but he's about as close to it as you can get.

Assuming Mega Man finishes with 45% (and even that's looking like it could be a stretch here) Crono beats Snake with 51.36% for Ryu = Sub-Zero.

Well, the key difference between MM and Link's fanbases when it comes to games is that Mega Man has not had a single "great" title since the SNES days, whereas most Zelda games find some way to push the envelope with sheer quality.

Both will have games constantly released, but MM's days are numbered if Capcom doesn't get off its ass.
