Heh, it looks like Snake will be the only character to DENY all
non-Noble 9 challengers of breaking 45%. God damn I love you Snake. --- I don't know when, I don't know how, but I know something starting right now... Watch and you'll see, someday I'll be... part of your world! |

And yet Snake still puts up 57% on Yoshi with his worst sprite ever !! Aw yeah. I think you might just be cheering for Snake, but... He did have an identifiable face pic in the background, and Frog and Bowser have proven to be overrated. --- Z1mZum totally owned me in the July 2006 Guru Contest The Funky Chickens in Trivia XVIII |

I really think that the picture is hurting Samus here. Plenty of
people have seen the trailer and the name Samus should attract voters,
but the same could be said for Solid **** and Snake bombed with that
pic. There's a big difference between a guy who looks like a turd, and a hot girl in skin-tight clothing. This isn't a Snake-level pic factor we're seeing here. --- ....TCELES B HSUP |

There's a big difference between a guy who looks like a turd, and a
hot girl in skin-tight clothing. This isn't a Snake-level pic factor
we're seeing here. Is it? Zero-Suit Samus is, I believe, in one game: Metroid: Zero Mission. That is also, I believe, her least popular game. I wouldn't be surprised if a large proportion of her fanbase didn't recognize her. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if a large proportion of her fanbase thought that the character in the SSBB trailer was someone entirely different. --- "Luckily, I brought my smart sword. It won't hurt anyone 'friendly'. In fact, it makes them talk!" - Princess Zelda |

Samus appears outside of her suit in Zero Mission and in the original Metroid. Not sure about Super Metroid. And nice update for Tifa. --- 5/18/05 Never forget. Never forgive. |
Karma Hunter | Posted 11/6/2006 9:47:44 PM | message detail |
Meh, anyone who's played a Metroid game knows it's a girl under there,
and you always see her at the end (and she was in the full Zero Suit
incarnation in MP2, as well). If this is hurting Samus it's due to the
fanbase that primarily knows her for SSB. Which isn't exactly
unexpected...though it begs the question, exactly how weak would Samus
be without SSB? --- *kills self* Commit it to memory. |

Honestly, I originally thought the Zero Suit Samus would only help
Samus. I mean, real Metroid fans love Samus outside the suit, right? This is really a great indicator of how much popularity Samus has soely from Smash Bros. --- 5/18/05 Never forget. Never forgive. |

This also explains why Samus does well in the contests, but Metroid always fails. Samus is only popular thanks to Smash Bros. No one plays Metroid games. --- 5/18/05 Never forget. Never forgive. |
Mac Arrowny | Posted 11/6/2006 9:53:19 PM | message detail |
Which isn't exactly unexpected...though it begs the question, exactly how weak would Samus be without SSB? The same might be asked of any Nintendo character. DK, Kirby, Luigi, Zelda, and even Mario and Link no doubt gain substantially from SSB/M. Just look at what KH/2 did for Squall to get an idea what SSB/M does for Samus. Could Squall 2k6 beat Samus 2k2? --- "Luckily, I brought my smart sword. It won't hurt anyone 'friendly'. In fact, it makes them talk!" - Princess Zelda |
MyWorldIsZelda | Posted 11/6/2006 9:53:24 PM | message detail |
It almost seems strange to blame this performance on the picture just because it isn't a bad
one. It's not like Snake's unrecognizable sprite from the 80s before
Metal Gear really took off and before people really started liking him.
Samus looks good in the picture, she's got the name down there, and there's even the ship in the background. ...But I can't think of any other reason for Samus to perform this poorly other than that picture. --- "Let's face it: the princess Zelda has always been a symbol of sexual desire." |

half? It's not overt, like it was with the Villains Contest...nor is
Samus that overwhelming of a favorite. But it is possible, I'll wager. --- *kills self* Commit it to memory. |

I'm surprised no one has tried to tie this in with the Sephiroth/Bowser/Ganondorf fiasco in the villains contest. I've always thought of that for a reason why Zelda might have been performing better in previous rounds. Doing better because she's up against other females and there is where she'd be more likely to perform well...but I didn't figure that Samus would get hurt by this, especially after she beat Rikku down right around where the expectations put her. But I guess Sephiroth didn't exactly look bad until then either. --- "Let's face it: the princess Zelda has always been a symbol of sexual desire." |

whelp, gotta hope this is all picture factor. I don't believe it, but
this is pretty pitiful either way. Samus might fall all the way to 51%

This makes no sense though. Why would Samus benefit so MUCH from Smash Bros? If it's all she really has then why is she a N9er? Exactly. Her primary strength does not come from Smash. Why do people want to ignore the old Metroid games as well as the much beloved Metroid Prime (series)? 1) People say Kirby's primary strength comes from SSB/M. Let's pull that into question too then. 2) Metroid Prime wasn't out before the 2k2 contest, and Samus was still able to beat Sonic and compete with Sephiroth. --- Diddy did it. Diddy did it. DAMMIT! What didn't Diddy do?! |
Cecil | Posted 11/6/2006 10:04:54 PM | message detail |
Exactly. Her primary strength does not come from Smash. Why do
people want to ignore the old Metroid games as well as the much beloved
Metroid Prime (series)? It would make no sense. It would not be wise to overlook the fact that some strength does come from SSB series, the new SSB hasn't come out yet and Tifa has the HKII boost. It seems like difference in strength is only temporary at best. |

"1) People say Kirby's primary strength comes from SSB/M. Let's pull that into question too then." Series contest. "2) Metroid Prime wasn't out before the 2k2 contest, and Samus was still able to beat Sonic and compete with Sephiroth." Barely beat Sonic. And, iirc, there were some hours of day vote missing from that match that would likely have reversed the match. Also, the game being brought into question as being a major contributor of her strength was already out at the time. Frankly, I'm thinking last year's match against Mario was more than just SFF. Samus probably dropped as SSBM's power fadded, while other Nintendites grew/maintained due to good facetime on the DS. --- If this post was overly verbose, that means I tried very hard to not call you an idiot. if this ends 55-45 and Samus is correctly adjusted last year, Tifa's at 37.52% and Peach is at 25.48%. hmm, I guess that isn't that
strange - I tend to forget that Tifa turned a poor showing into a
blowout - but it's still higher than I'm willing to go for Tifa. either
this picture is doing damage or Samus just isn't the Samus of old. --- xyzzy |
ChichiriMuyo | Posted 11/6/2006 10:15:42 PM | message detail |
"If Samus gets most of her strength from SSB, then why is she lightyears ahead of the likes of Ness and Captain Falcon?" Well, it's a bad choice to say most of her power. Even with what Tifa is getting on her, she clearly hasn't lost the majority of her support. Metroid is certainly a bigger deal to GF than EB or F-Zero, and chances are the popularity of a character's home game and the popularity of their other apperances (be it SSB or KH) feed off of eachother. SSBM introduced a lot of people to Metroid, making them Metroid fans. Metroid fans saw Samus in SSB and became SSB fans. It's this sorta thing that makes the Nintendo characters so strong to begin with. --- If this post was overly verbose, that means I tried very hard to not call you an idiot. If you mark someone for flaming/trolling, you probably deserved it. |

I don't think she'll actually take the lead, but she could win some updates and maybe cut it down to 500 or so. what I'm wondering is if the "unrecognizable picture" will hurt her more in the daytime than it is right now. again, I don't think it's that much of a factor, but if it is I'd expect day people to go "who?" more than night people. --- xyzzy |
