Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 409

Whoops, I forgot Wolverine and Homer Simpson. Throw them just above Sparrow.

And yes, I think Goku would beat Yoda. It's GameFAQs, the place where Crono can beat Mega Man and Sonic.

If the next gimmicky contest isn't another games contest, CJayC really needs to allow any character that's been in a video game in.

When it comes down to it, there's not all that much difference between a boring female bracket match and a boring male bracket match.

I would hope that the next contest would be a Games Contest before we get any of this crazy ficitional character stuff. After all the games that have come out and the ones that didn't make it before, it makes it the ideal contest right now.

I seriously think Harry Potter is being underrated. He has HUGE name recognition, and is probably the most popular character of our generation by far. I really think the series could have a lot of underdog characters.

I agree that the next contest should be a Games contest, but it would be sweet if the next Character contest was an all out rumble - "nominate anyone who's been in a video game".

I think we can agree that the Big Four in terms of expectations would be Batman, Spider-Man, Wolverine and Darth Vader. Those guys and Clinkeroth would probably be expected to be in the Elite Eight.

Captain Jack Sparrow is one of the biggest characters in the industry right now. All of the hype leading up to Dead Man's Chest was HUGE, and the movie broke one BILLION (that's right, with a B) in overall gross income. That's top 5 all-time, folks.

R2D2 and Luke Skywalker would do good =0

I think Star Wars would be like FF7 in terms of depth. There would potentially be an insane number of strong characters from it. I think Luke would be much stronger than R2-D2, though.

Sir Crono:
Captain Jack Sparrow is one of the biggest characters in the industry right now. All of the hype leading up to Dead Man's Chest was HUGE, and the movie broke one BILLION (that's right, with a B) in overall gross income. That's top 5 all-time, folks.

I a box office enthusiast, so I'm well aware of how popular the POTC franchise is. Next May is ridiculous; the three biggest franchises out there all open up in the same month. Spider-Man 3 should break POTC2's opening weekend record, but probably won't match its domestic gross. Shrek 3 is hard to predict. POTC3 probably won't match POTC2.

Jack Sparrow is tough to predict though because of his newness. Also, he doesn't have massive cross-medium popularity like Batman and Spider-Man (comics, movies, toys, video games, TV shows, etc.). So I can't see him doing all that respectably against the truly top tier.

But Jack Sparrow is THE reason why Pirates of the Caribbean is so popular. Without him, that movie would've been sunk. A movie doesn't get that much intake if he's not popular. The lack of crossovers (but he IS in KHII!!!!) doesn't hurt him that much, I don't think, nor does the newness.

I don't really get why Batman would be so strong. I could see him as a decent midcarder, maybe around the equivalent of Dante's level. Put him against Harry Potter and we've got an incredibly debatable match - don't care what anyone says, but Harry could have untold strength, which I'd be more willing to believe than him flopping horribly.

Also, the winner of the imaginary fictional character contest must then go onto a championship match with Link!

Maybe it's just me, but Wolverine doesn't inspire that much confidence when he's got only 38.5% on Solid Snake. Maybe Snake is more popular on IGN, but I can't see many characters head and shoulders above him.

Jack Slate is the protagonist of the Dead to Rights games, a spinoff in the vein of the Max Payne series. He faced Max Payne in the first round and got his ass quadded.

Oh come on, creative - I'm not saying Batman is weak by any stretch of the imagination, I'm saying Harry is likely a good deal stronger than you're giving him credit for. If Jack Sparrow can benefit from modern iconic status, then Harry Potter - especially among the youthful demographics of this site - is likely in the very same boat, possibly even moreso. He'd get anti-votes, sure, but probably nothing too substantial. I'd take him to be a great bracket-buster.

We DO have a recent (within the last year) Harry Potter poll:

Poll 2057 (07/10/2005)
Do you plan to read the upcoming sixth Harry Potter book?

7259 12.59% Yes, I've already got it ordered
15721 27.27% Yes, I'll buy it off the shelf
4524 7.85% Maybe, I have to read the others first
7557 13.11% No, but I'll watch the movie
22595 39.19% No, and I doubt I ever will

TOTAL VOTES: 57656

I'm not going to get into an argument about Harry Potter challenging Batman in any way shape or form, because that's just ridiculous. However, you might be right in that HP could be a bracket buster. But that's as likely to be due to overestimation as underestimation.

Ya know, I know Vader and Wolverine and Batman and all them would be amongst the most popular non-VG characters, but to say they'll be able to beat some Noble Nine members is a totally whole 'nother thing. I know she is a very poor example, but look at Carmen Sandiego -- she had her line of games and she was more well-known for her show, and she got ANNIHILATED by Zelda (who got 45% on the weakest NN'er last year). I can't stress enough that I know Homer/Goku/Peter would do much better than that, but I don't think any of them would actually be able to match a Noble Nine member...or even get 45% on one.

I think the one with the best potential is James Bond though, seriously -- not to say he'd be the favorite to win such a bracket, but he's got the highest potential for such a character. On top of the ever-popular movie series that's been around for ages, he was also the main guy in Goldeneye 007...and if you don't think gamers really care for Bond, go find some old issues of EGM and look for their classic April Fools joke about playing as different Bond's in multi-player...their joke made them HATED by lots of gamers, and I'm sure finding the GameShark code to do it didn't let the magazine off the hook from all of those angry fans. There's also the other Bond games, too...

...I think whatever character does the best will need a solid foundation game-wise to support them, or else they'll be trampled here against those who do. So, though I dunno if Bond would be able to win a non-VG bracket, but that's still who I would definitely take.
