Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 356

Poll 847 (03/31/2002)
Who is your favorite Final Fantasy VI character?

2300 7.95% Celes
1433 4.96% Cyan
2226 7.7% Edgar
409 1.41% Gau
651 2.25% Gogo
3823 13.22% Locke
3198 11.06% Mog
300 1.04% Relm
4351 15.05% Sabin
1150 3.98% Setzer
5983 20.69% Shadow
177 0.61% Strago
2543 8.79% Terra
374 1.29% Umaro

Shadow, Sabin, and Locke, and maybe even Mog have the potential to be significantly stronger than Terra. They wouldn't be powerhouses by any means, but they could beat most fodder. Of course, old polls, especially ones with many choices and low votals, aren't very reliable, but 20.69% versus 8.79% is a huge difference.

The problem with Sora is that he's wasted potential. He'll make it to round 3 and will probably do a little better than expected against Mega Man.

Yeah and Yoshi is the strongest mario character

I'm not sure why people like to resort to bringing up that Yoshi poll in some crazy attempt to disprove that favorite character polls mean anything. That is an exception, not the rule.

Where did Vincent end up in the favorite character poll? Behind Cloud and ahead of Tifa/Aeris.

Where did Auron end up in the favorite character poll? Ahead of everyone else in his game by a pretty significant margin.

Where is Sub-Zero likely to end up in the stats this year? Ahead of Scorpion -- same as the favorite MK character poll.

The "Favorite Final Fantasy title" poll ended up being exactly how they ended up in the Games Contest -- FFVII > FFVI > FFX.

You should never take character polls as absolute fact, but they're far more credible than some people give credit for. When we have no other data to work off of on those certain characters, it's not a bad idea to combine those with some common sense. The idea that the main character must be the strongest is rather flawed in many instances. Shadow being stronger than Terra -- though not by anything significant -- wouldn't be surprising. He has far more appeal than anyone else in FFVI, and he clearly has a nice fanbase as a result.

Except that it's Yoshi and upsetting Yoshi, in both senses of the word, is not okay. We can all get our KH fixes with Kairi and with Sora's first two dominating performances.

If it isn't significant, then it doesn't really matter anyway, as he'd still be weak garbage.

If that happens, then Mega Man doesn't even make it to Sora!

And Snake winning the favorite poll. Awesome. If Mega Man hadn't beaten him twice already, I'd think about Snake > Mega.

And ha, Sora > Sonic

The problem with Sora is that his path is pretty cut and dry. He wins two rounds and goes out to Mega Man. There's not much for him to surprise everyone with unless he just puts up an impressive loss to the Blue Bomber.

Terra is currently high end fodder. If Shadow is roughly 2% stronger than her, then he's already potentially the strongest FFVI representative yet. If we can get someone who's around Kefka's level, it wouldn't be a bad idea to have them instead of...Phoenix Wright, for example. >>

This poll makes me more convinced that something screwy will happen in the Battle Royale. Snake dominating, Sora over Sonic... I'm going with Sephiroth > Cloud in the BR, so hopefully I'm right.

Sephiroth > Cloud in the BR is definitely something I considered. (He's the only villain; I similarly suspect Samus will do better than expected for being the only female character, and the only sci-fi character).

Battle Royale has always looked simple from my perspective in the first round -- hardcore Zelda fanbase v. hardcore FFVII fanbase v. hardcore Mario fanbase v. hardcore CT/Mega Man/Sonic/MGS fanbase v. Metroid fanbase.

If Samus doesn't get creamed by a significant margin (I'm thinking the male bracket winner is at least 3% higher, probably 5%) I'll be stunned.

I'm feeling a lot better about having Snake last two or more rounds on the off chance he pulls a miracle and makes it to the Royale. But he's lost around .5% from his peak in a five way poll...that's a lot, considering. I'll probably stick with Mega Man, though I'm rooting for the guy.

Meh, Sonic gets lackluster bracket support, just like Mega Man. Didn't stop him from nearly toppling the Blue Bomber, who got way too close to Crono for comfort.

Crono and Snake do better in these polls because they appeal to a more hardcore fanbase -- their games don't appeal to everyone, they're not as well known, they're not as casual. This is evidenced by their strong night votes and their games' performances in the Top Ten List.

Sonic is going to get the bulk of these 'leftover' votes in a head-to-head poll. Sonic/Crono is as up in the air as it's ever been.

Unsurprisingly, Sonic and Sora have been gaining like crazy since night. Crono's been hit surprisingly hard by the day vote, though -- almost as much as Snake. I was under the impression he had a fairly solid day vote...

From what I remember:

Crono -- 27%
Snake -- 34.5%
Sonic -- 10%
Sora -- 12%
Lower Seed -- 16.5%

This is going by my faulty memory, right about before the day vote hit...wait, where's TRE???

I'd just take 2% from Lower Seed and give it to Crono to get what I remember. (Then again, the last time I checked last night was about an hour and a half after the poll went up)

People don't follow the contests as closely as we do. There's a reason why people think this place is still SquareFAQs. They don't want to underestimate a main Square protagonist, and one just fresh off of the release of a smash sequel? HOLY CRAP

The funny thing is, if anyone is going to challenge Link down the line for new, true, and long-term dominance...my bets are all on Sora. He's basically the only recurring Square protagonist that has been created and has an extremely bright future. Imagine if Kingdom Hearts were to chronicle his growth into a man, a Cloud-like badass -- and to evolve past the Disney aspect as far as plot goes (heck, some may argue it's already done it).

As far as the future of Square goes in these contests...it's all Sora. He could really become champion in a decade (assuming these things are still going on).

The trick is to get Sora to come into his own. Honestly, does anyone think Sora would have beaten Tidus in 2003? I really doubt it, but today he would probably be the favorite. If you make Sora into a man, give him his own awesome unique style except by making him into the mold of a true FF lead, you've got something no character has ever had before. And in a game that thrives upon cameos, what's to say that Sora won't start appearing in other games and spinoffs? Square fans might not be able to let go of Cloud, but they'll definitely start paying attention if Sora becomes the face of Square itself.
