speaking of which, Sora, an overseeded 1 seed, has such a predictable path. it sucks that he didn't get a good 4/5 opponent that could potentially give him a scare. he's just as wasted as Squall in my mind.

The only good thing about Sora's path is that we're likely to finally have a good reading on his true strength.

How convenient that the contest starts at poll 2499, or 2500, or 2501, depending on how badly I count.

It'll start on poll 2499 by my count. Also, Spc2k4 started on poll 1601.

You know, I picked Chun-Li > Lara Croft without thinking, but then I decided to take a second look at it and wow.

We've got pretty accurate readings on Lara from 2k2 and 2k3: 21.8% and 22.85% on base Link respectively. She might be a bit underrated in 2k2 due to being behind Link-Mario and Mario-Crono (though I'm not sure if the latter would overrate or underrate her).

Chun-li's only been in 2k5, where she has a respectable Xs of 24.92%, comfortably beating 2k3 Lara with 54.16%.

However, Chun-Li was behind Bowser-Snake, and that had to overrate her a little. Other than that, I really can't see Lara dropping from 2k3 to 2k5, so I pretty much see Lara 2k5 being dead even with Chun-Li 2k5.

What have the release for Chun-Li been since 2k5, and for Lara since 2k3? Because if you couple a dead even 2k5 to the fact that Lara should be a huge favourite, I'm switching to Lara, and I'm not even kidding.

I have to say that I'm a little thrown by all of the debate over Ganondorf/Vincent. Let's consider two matches that took place last year:

Ganondorf 54.10%
Auron 45.90%

Vincent Valentine 54.00%
Dante 46.00%

If we assume that Vincent was stronger than Ganondorf last year, it would stand to reason that Dante would have beaten Auron heads up.

Now, let's think about this "Dante > Auron" matter for a second. In 2003 and 2004, Auron came out ahead of Dante in the X-Stats despite going up against Cloud and Sephiroth, respectively. And while I know that people will argue that the following comparison is sketchy, I'm still going to throw it out there:

2k3

Auron 64.47%
Tails 35.53%

2k4

Dante 57.40%
Tails 42.60%

Yes, Square was strong in 2003. Yes, Dante had DMC3 come out between 2k4 and 2k5. Yes, the voter pool changes from year to year. But how reasonable is it to think that Dante made up that much ground on Auron? I have a hard time buying it.

Based on that alone, I would have to believe that Ganondorf 2k5 was stronger than Vincent 2k5, and with GameFAQs suffering from an ever-increasing level of Nintensanity, I can't see Advent Children and Dirge of Cerberus swinging things in Vincent's favor. It should still be a decent match, but I would be surprised if Vincent ever leads it.

(For those that are wondering why I'm ignoring Vincent's more impressive matches from last year...Kerrigan's worthless for comparison, and there's no certain answer as to how SFF played into the matches against Squall and Crono.)

The problem with that is that Ganondorf 2k5 beating Vincent 2k5 isn't an issue to most people -- at least not to me.

However, I really don't consider increasing NintendoFAQs to be > DoC and AC. Why? We had NintendoFAQs last year. It wasn't just NintendoFAQs either, it was also "lack of Square releaseses" FAQs.

Square has had Kingdom Hearts II, DoC, AC, FFIII & XII (Japan) and DQVIII as opposed to Nintendo's NSMB. If anything, Square's closing the gap this year, at least until TP comes out.

Anymore? People gave a crap about Lara in 2k2/2k3? She'd have been a lot stronger if that were true.

Despite people not giving a crap about her (or at least not to such an extent you'd expect them to, and I'm strictly talking contest strength here), she still had that "strength" in 2k2/2k3.

The Boss was easily the most well-received new character in that game.

That seems to be the common consensus, but I feel that Eva was sort of just forgotten about for purposes of nominating in this contests. I rarely see people talk about her, but she's pretty damn cool in mgs3, even despite Spoilers.

...How? Big Boss has the old-school appeal, which is fairly small when it comes to Metal Gear, and a small amount of people who connect him with the protagonist of MGS3. The Boss was easily the most well-received new character in that game. Ocelot might be more powerful than her on balance, but he's not exactly...new.

I'm fairly certain that the vast majority of Big Boss's votes were from those who associated him with Naked Snake. I highly doubt Metal Gear Solid fans cared enough about Big Boss to vote him over Auron. And for the most part, Naked Snake should be more popular than The Boss. Plus, I don't see The Boss getting 30% on Auron. She may be Metal Gear, but it's not like Metal Gear can't have borderline fodder...

I'd give The Boss a good chance of getting that score on Auron.

There's the little fact that no one gives a crap about Lara Croft anymore. Her last game was supposed to be the RE4 of her series, and no one gave it a second look.

Proportionally, it was the RE4 of her series. Angel of Darkness was one of the worst games of all time, so anything above average (and Legend was SIGNIFICANTLY so - it's short and mostly easy, but the actual core gameplay is almost flawless) will be a plus. Legend got its fair share of coverage. I don't think she'll beat Chun-Li, even though Consolefreak had me convinced for a few seconds before remembering 2k4, but she stands NO chance of losing to Alyx, nor will her match against Chun-Li be a blowout.

Lara should beat Alyx on just recognizability alone -- if people say Gordon is unknown, Alyx has to be too. She's easily more recognizable than Tina, Max, Fisher...hell, more than Leon too -- all four of which has beaten Gordon -- and Alyx simply has to be weaker than him. I know being recognizable isn't the only thing, obviously, but I'd take Lara over Tina and Max for sure, not to mention that I think Lara would give Fisher a good match (regardless of what 2k4 says) and could do around what Gordon did against Leon (give or take a lil'). Add to it Lara has had a bit of a resurge and should have lots of bracket support, and she's set; in 2k3, as a 7-seed, the only two women who had more brackets taking them to win the championship was Zelda and Samus, and she had very nice bracket support in 2k2 as a 1-seed (though her wins against pure fodder were unimpressive, she walked out with 75+% of the brackets and chopped down Crono's bracket-support big-time).

Therefore, we should lose lots of brackets when Chun-Li beats that ass for her, not Alyx.

First of all, I doubt many people buy Metal Gear Solid games and then don't pay attention to the plot.

Bull****. The plot is a very integral and important part of MGS, but that doesn't mean that even HALF the people playing it even know what the hell's going on half the time. Not to mention that there are a fair share of people who have only played MGS3 without playing the other games in the series (and being a prequel, MGS3 doesn't really require knowledge of the previous games to enjoy it).

And let's not forget you're assuming that people play all the way to the end, or really register that one line in their brains and sear it there until contest time, therby making the distinction, going "Oh! It's _____!", and making their vote.

You're not going to tell me that Naked Snake doesn't outdo Big Boss by a LARGE margin. If you do, you're wrong.

Second of all, the game TELLS you that his name is Big Boss at the end.

True, but I don't think how gamers care for a certain character translates over well to how they like Big Boss, plus you also have to assume that not EVERY person who played MGS3 beat it...a nit-picking point, but still a point. As it's been said by many of us, how much gamers liked a certain character translated more to giving Solid Snake strength than Big Boss.

I understand that, but there's no telling exactly how many of these NS fans in the first place voted for him -- so using that in 'proving' he'll be stronger than The Boss is unreliable. I too expect BB to be stronger than The Boss, but I don't expect it to be anything drastic. Otherwise I'd be expecting Celes to blow her out.

Let me ask this: Liquid Snake or Naked Snake, who wins?

I can't imagine Liquid easily winning that, if at all, and Liquid's worst value on Link 2k4/2k5 would come from the Villain Contest (18.98%). If Mario = Samus (and assuming Samus didn't SFF Ganon), Big Boss is at 16.73%...and I'm not sold on Samus staying that strong.

I'm just saying that I don't care where Liquid is at, I can see Naked being comparatively strong, and I would think NS > TB > BB.

Not I -- while the ending is certainly what catapults The Boss up into the echelons of favorite status, she is still very visible and important throughout the entire game. Heck, her primary role throughout the entire game is kicking Snake's ass. People may not follow the plot closely, but that doesn't stop them from enjoying the kick-ass cutscenes.

Big Boss getting strength from Naked Snake requires an active inference on the part of the player, and for a player who doesn't follow the plot closely or know much about the mythos of the series, you're just not going to get that. Every other day on the MGS3 boards you get people asking "What's up with Solid Snake in this game?", despite the fact that from the very first trailer this game ever had it was bloody obvious who the main character was going to be.

And as for that 'favorite' status, it's not really going to matter much in a fodder/fodder match like this. I'll bet you anything in this world over 100 times the people on this site have Ocelot as their one of their favorite characters as opposed to Pac-Man (heck, I'm tempted to go 1000 or better), but it's one vote either way. Ocelot would probably do better against any significantly stronger opponent than Pac-Man would based on that simple fact, but that doesn't matter head-to-head.

here, you want another reason why there is no doubt in my mind that Naked Snake would do significantly better than Big Boss?

this right here:

http://ps2.ign.com/articles/629/629401p2.html

last July, IGN had their own little tournament called "Battle of the Badasses" to determine who was the most popular "badass" character. the characters had to appear on the PS2, but not necassarily originate in a video game. some of the better performers were: Solid Snake, Dante, Auron, Tommy Vercetti, Wolverine, Goku, and the Punisher. so, whatever, for most of those guys.

Solid Snake won the 32-man contest by beating Dante (who was the third strongest character in the contest) with 55% of the votes. who was the second strongest character? that's right - it was Naked Snake.

in his first match, Solid Snake only beat Naked Snake with 50.1% of the vote, winning by just a few dozen votes. it was, by far, the closest match of the contest.

so basically, Naked Snake was just as popular as Solid Snake, who pretty much dominated the rest of the competition. now, i know that it is a different site with a different voter poll, but would Big Boss have been able to draw as many votes as Solid Snake over there with the name "Big Boss" and a picture of the old guy from MGS2? i seriously, SERIOUSLY doubt it. so, yes - i am seriously convinced that Naked Snake could and would do better than Big Boss.

This is the Ganondorf who was ~= Magus 2k3?
This was the Magus who got pounded by Knuckles 2k5?
The same Knuckles who lost fairly well to Squall in 2k5?
Squall, who is < Vincent 2k5?
Vincent, who lost by a relatively small margin to Crono in 2k5?
Crono, who barely beat Mega Man in 2k5?
Mega Man, who is ~= to Sonic 2k5?!

Granted, Ganon has grown and Magus has decreased, but still...

I'm going to have to take a page from Slowflake and question the legitimacy of IGN's poll -- aside from every other match there being a barnburner, as he noted, there is the fact that Naked Snake went up against Solid Snake himself, and him doing that well there just seems crazy. Maybe if he had done as comparatively well as him without actually facing him it would ring truer, but I couldn't think Naked Snake would do anything other than get a brutal SFF beatdown at the hands of Solid here.

Of course Naked Snake is the most popular MGS character not named Solid Snake, but I don't think he's enough to go 50/50 with Bowser. Not by a longshot.

Well yeah, The Boss has a few cutscenes here and there, but she is far from prominent in the game (at least from what I've seen). I'm not saying that she doesn't get anything from him, but I'm getting the feeling that the ending is where she gets the meat of her popularity from. Without it, I can see people saying "yeah, she's cool. She kicked Snake's ass a couple of times." But I don't see it making her stand out.

Big Boss getting strength from Naked Snake requires an active inference on the part of the player, and for a player who doesn't follow the plot closely or know much about the mythos of the series, you're just not going to get that. Come on now, you're insulting the intelligence of Metal Gear fans. You're making it seem like those who know the connection between Big Boss and Naked Snake are in the minority or something. Most MGS3 fans should know the connection. If you follow gaming whatsoever, many previews and reviews practically gave it away. Anyone who follows MGS whatsoever should know the connection.

Come to think of it, if someone likes Big Boss enough to vote him over Auron, I'm fairly sure they are aware of his role in MGS3, assuming they know anything whatsoever about MGS3. Yeah, it doesn't work the other way around, but without MGS3 I'm betting that Auron beats Big Boss far worse.

There's usually enough of a hardcore MGS fanbase that'll vote for just about anything, I can't see Auron getting *too* much more than he already had given how weak Big Boss is right now.

But if most people *do* know the connection, then it must be some weird version of name/pic factor going on here, because Naked Snake with a Naked Snake picture should at *least* break 35% on Auron, and that's being extremely generous to Auron.

Not most people. Most of the core MGS fans. I'm not considering the voter base as a whole because I'm pretty sure that for the most part, nobody but MGS3 fans will be voting for The Boss (not counting those who don't know or don't care for either). So I'm only talking about that specific group when discussing Big Boss.

I would think ANYONE that voted for Big Boss over Auron either didn't know either or was part of that core MGS fanbase to begin with. I can't imagine BB getting any more than the most insignificant of help from him being mentioned in the other games. I can't see that hurting The Boss any more than it hurts Big Boss...
