I wish today's poll had some way to show the voters that already had a 360 -- there's not really any reason to vote 360 when they already have it, unless it's the only system they want...

...not that there's lots and lots of 360-owners here, but it would have been nice to see.

Been gone for 2 weeks...I come back...and I am glad to see that the nerdboys dreams of Jay Solano and Midgar Zolom were soundly defeated...

The lineup of topics for this summer's (autumn's?) contest is filling fast!

As the one analyst that entertains as well as educates, I am always looking for new creative ways to push the boundaries of my talents here...and I have decided to give my fans and detractors too a chance to make it in one of my first round columns!

So....any fanboys or fangirls who totally idolize a non-first tier character (i.e. Cloudites and other first tier peeps dont count!) who makes the bracket field AND who want to be a part of one of my revered analysis columns this time, for some good old fashioned fanbaby bashing, email me at illuminasteve78@yahoo.com and express your interest, and give me your AIM or Yahoo Messenger screen name so I can contact ya! Serious inquiries only! :)

Now then, I must meditate on the #1 and #8 seeds...I do see some fluff already!

A lot of people have been turned off to the Prime series because of MP2, and then you've got to factor the Metroid series not being that popular in the first place.

I just want to clear up a few things here. First of all, MP2 was not a disappointment. The only disappointing thing about it was its poor sales (I think, barely over 500,000). Now why did it sell so poorly? Surprisingly, the original MP is the one that deserves the blame. Casual audiences simply weren't satisfied with the Metroid formula, and they had no reason to buy it's sequel. Seriously, no one really seems to care about Metroid, aside from hardcore fans of the series.

Second, MP3:C will sell somewhere between MP and MP2. Prime let too many people down for it to be a major hit, but people hungry for a shooter for their new system, that's tailor-made for shooters, will pick it up. The reality of it is that Zelda will be in the spotlight, waiting for SMG and Brawl to take its place.

I was a bit confused about why MP2 got so little attention. For one, MP was a smash success, so why wouldn't people want more of it? MP2 was also released at the beginning of the video game drought that plagued the gamecube. MP2 is still a good game, yet I don't know one person other than me who bought and played it.

Damned Z1mZum, beating me by one point. I'm gonna be pissed if Toadette makes 2k6 and Mewtwo doesn't.

Oh and for some reason I consider Crono finally getting a one seed more shocking than Sora.

Funnily enough, Crono's seed has gone up by one every year since 2002. At this rate he'll have to be in the Tournament of Champions... as a 0 seed!!!

You can say that many people were turned off to MP2 due to the first game (and honestly, I certainly believe it), but GameFAQs isn't that crowd -- they took to it pretty well. 45% on Wind Waker is no joke, really.

But for the crowd that was hooked on MP1, I know MP2 is considered far and wide a disappointment. And the reasons are numerous. It's even less casual friendly than its prequel, only it is stubbornly more resistant to the kind of sequence breaking that made Metroid such a sensation among the hardcore crowd in the first place, and Dark Aether can be a pretty damn irritating place. There aren't as many varieties in terms of area, it doesn't feel as epic...there's little doubt that it turned off even *more* people to the Prime series even if you want to blame Prime 1 for doing it initially.

Does it stop MP2 from helping out Samus? Of course not -- I'm sure that the 3D Sonic games help the blue blur, that MGS2 helps Snake, and that Wind Waker helped out Link. It's just not as much as it could be.

Commit it to memory.

Guys, you seem to be forgetting that Metroid Prime 2 was released only one week after Halo 2, on the same day as Half-Life 2 and Metal Gear Solid 3, and one week before the DS launch. And San Andreas had just been released a couple of weeks earlier. It was competing with all of those game when it was first released.

And MP2 is not as good as the original Prime. Period. If you say it is, you're wrong.

Actually, World of Warcraft was released just one week later, too. Another huge game to compete with. The Metroid name simply does not have enough buzz among the general public to stand up against all of those brands.

As of right now, I believe it's Link > Cloud Strife > Sephiroth > Mario > Samus Aran > Crono > Mega Man > Sonic the Hedgehog > Solid Snake.

Some of those placings may be liable to change during the upcoming contest.

MP2 isn't as good as the original by a long shot. Too many recycled areas, the whole light/dark think was a gimmick best done a decade earlier, the only thing that was an improvement was the difficulty.

Then again, Super Metroid pwns both of them from a great height.

I liked the whole lot, but sure I like some more than others. As for MP and MP2 I'd have a hard time deciding which one I liked most because they both have their redeeming features, but then again MP does have The Ridley Factor.

I'm not completely sure what that was a shot at (probably TP), but still...damn.

That wasn't a shot at anything. Metroid Prime 2 was a straight up Zelda game, just in a Metroid setting. Classic 2-world system. Elemental weaponry. Basic Zelda formula of find dungeon, get item within dungeon, use item to beat boss and proceed, rinse & repeat. The main Luminite pretty much served as your basic wiseman (Rauru, etc.). The game really played like a Zelda game to me.

Yes, MP2 was basically a sci-fi Zelda, though the series as a whole is basically Zelda with a different perspective.

The lack of sequence breaking and emphasis on key hunting in MP2 were major contributors to that feeling. One thing I didn't get is how after all the flak Retro received for the artifact hunting in MP, they decided to put an even more annoying time waster at the end of MP2. It boggles the mind.
